I'd make a comment about not letting the door hit him in the ass on the way out, but he's way too slow to make it before the thing closes.

Lambert is by all accounts a good guy and it was cool to see him finally pull on the shirt he dreamed about wearing (legitimately, he isn't Robbie Keane).  Doesn't mean it was a good fit or he should have a spot going forward, but I'm glad he got the chance.

Yeah, I've got nothing against Lambert. He wasn't meant to be a huge part of the team in the first place, it's not his fault Sturridge was injured and Mario was such a bad fit.

Origi and Coutinho scored in a 2-0 friendly win in Finland against HJK Helsinki. They've got another friendly today against Swindon Town, where Benteke and Firmino may make their debuts.

With Lambert's departure, Benteke inherits the famous number 9 shirt. I guess the high transfer fee wasn't enough pressure.

The club signed 18 year old Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional. The fee is said to be around £500,000.

Benteke doesn't seem to be sweating the pressure:

Love this display. No rush, total confidence. And Andy Carroll never scored a goal like this in his life, for those worried that Benteke is just another heading oaf.

There were people that said Torres would suck when Liverpool bought him because Fernando Morientes (Same name! Same country!) struggled during his time there.

Many analysts love to over-analyze Rodgers' system, and make the blanket assumption that anyone over 5' 9" that heads the ball won't fit in it, regardless of the other skills the player has.

You must not read Liverpool blogs obsessively.  Yeah, there's a big worry that Benteke will be another bad fit to Rodgers's system--not technical enough, too slow, just a target man, a combination of Andy Carroll, Emile Heskey, and Crouchie.

Personally, I think Benteke has shown plenty of technical ability with Villa and Belgium, and the fact that he scores 25% of his goals with his head just adds another dimension.  My perception is that Liverpool have scored very few goals on balls pinging around the box in the last few year and could use a guy who can score from chaos (Ruud Van Nistelrooy was the master of this).  Benteke's combination of technical ability and heading will go a long way there.

Two news items of note today:

  • Sheyi Ojo is likely to go to Wolves on loan.
  • Joe Allen's hamstring will keep him out of the season opener.  Which I think is a great thing, because he isn't close to being in the best XI and Rodgers would pick him anyway.

Has Liverpool addressed their horrid defense at all this summer other than signing Clyne?

I understand some of the problems last year could be laid at the corpse of Gerrard in the first half of the season and some unspectacular DM play but are we really going to see Sakho and Lovren in the Starting XI this year?

Sakho's probably the best CB in the team when fit. He and Skrtel played fine (albeit as part of a back 3 with Can) during the turnaround around New Year's.

Clyne over Johnson is an immense upgrade, and it stands to reason that Moreno will be better this season. However, I think Joe Gomez is going to go a long way to determining how effective the back line plays, as once one guy (likely Sakho) goes down, impact depth beyond Lovren/Touré will be required.

According to Sky, Liverpool are in talks with Fiorentina for a £5m Borini transfer. Also being discussed is a Balotelli loan with obligation to buy at end of year.

That £14m from Sunderland would have been real nice, cheers Fabio

Haven't been super impressive in the first 2 games, but 6 points are 6 points.

The insane run of tough away games begins Monday (yes, another Monday game) against Arsenal.

So, Lallana is the new inexplicable binky. Got it. Looking forward to cursing his name like Glen Johnson's. At least it's harder to say.

What's the update on Henderson?  Any idea on his injury?  Projected time out?  All I've read was "foot, no fracture, day to day" but I also read that Rodgers said he was in too much pain to complete the Bournemouth game.

So Liverpool started the season with 3 fixtures that they lost last year (if you think of Bournemouth as Hull's replacement), so 2 wins and a draw means they are 7 points better off than they were a year ago.

Liverpool draw Carlisle United in the League Cup.

Any time Carlisle United is mentioned is always a great excuse to post the video describing Jimmy Glass' last-kick-of-the-season goal in 1999 to keep them in the Football League.

I'm pretty sure that was Jimmy Glass's last touch for Carlisle, too.

Also, Nigel Pearson was managing that team.  Glass is lucky he didn't miss or he'd have gotten shivved.

It was actually the last game at Carlisle for both Glass and Pearson.

I just learned that Glass played for Bournemouth back in their 3rd/4th division days. A year before his famous Carlisle goal, he started in goal for Bournemouth in the Football League Trophy final at Wembley. They lost 2-1 AET to Grimsby Town. They were 15 minutes from winning it in regulation, until Grimsby equalized...on a Glass OG.

I have a softspot for Carlisle. Got family there, some of whom I think are proud Ukipers. But it's the only place i was ever chased by gypsies on BMXs through the cobbled city centre streets. I always root for Carlisle.

Markovic is going out on loan to Fenerbahce. The club seems to still be high on his potential, but he clearly needs some games.

So, between this and Mario, that's 36 million GBP spent last year that will be playing for someone else this season.

Europa League draw coming up in the morning. With the semi-final appearance in 2010 dropping off the coefficient, Liverpool are relegated to Pot 2.

I get the feeling Liverpool will regret the loan pretty soon. Lallana isn't getting it done and is now hurt and Ibe isn't there yet. They're going to be playing two matches a week for a long time so Markovic could easily get the time he needs at Liverpool.

Drawn with Rubin Kazan (Russia), Bordeaux (France), and FC Sion (Switzerland) in Europa League Group B. The trip to Kazan is a bit of a hike, but the draw could definitely have been worse.

How likely is it that someone else is coming in? I keep hearing rumors about Mkhitaryan. I hope something happens.

This target striker nonsense needs to end. Brodge has gotten nothing out of some talented strikers over the past year.

When a team is sitting back and inviting pressure, a target striker is surrounded and nearly useless. They're playing 10v11 in this system. Attackers needs to be spreading the back line and creating space. Instead the opponent is allowed to pack the middle and aren't in any danger down the flanks.

Caveat: I'm aware I may be overreacting, but at what point is B-Rod on the hot seat. They looked like absolute dogshit today, calling into question the squad's preparation.

They've scored two goals in four matches.
The selection has been nutso. (To give the dead horse a few more whacks, Lovren does not deserve a starting spot. And, I'm convinced Lallana's injury was the only reason he was out of the lineup.)
The tactics are baffling. It seems to be hoof-and-hope to Benteke, and no plan B. SocrManiac explains further:

SocrManiac said:
His selection and tactics look like he forgot to check where or who he was playing.

You know they're going to pack it in, yet you play your beloved target striker. He's on an island and totally useless. You ignore Lovren's warning signs in the earlier games. Your tactical adjustment to bring a second striker in sacrifices your last vestige of creative talent. It's utter insanity.
I know I'm shooting from the hip, but if the goal is Champions League football, how long can Rodgers stay in charge before he sabotages their chances?

Having watched 3 of Liverpool's four league games this season (and highlights of t'other) the word I would use is - incoherent. There was talk pre season about how Liverpool might play and there wasn't much of a consensus and there was a something of a lack of surety.

Rogers couldn't wait to offload Andy Carroll, and at the time we all agreed and rightly so, he wasn't a Rodgers type of player. It wasn't so much a knock on Carroll who is what he is, but a recognition of the style of play Rodgers' Swansea side played - ball on the ground, keep the ball, good movement, accurate passing. So when Benteke was signed I was intrigued, how would Liverpool, or Rodgers' style of play accommodate Benteke. I'm not saying Carroll and Benteke are like for like, the latter has better feet, ball control and is better at holding the play and bringing in others and he's a better marksman.

But from what I have seen, Liverpool have for large parts been playing (or attempting to play) the kind of attacking football that they would if Carroll was in the team, which is not what we might perceive to be the Rodgers way, if indeed there really is such a thing. Of course he's been in the job a few more years and I expect him to be a more mature and pragmatic manager and set up a side to get results and to a degree temper any devoutness to any single principle regarding style of play.

But there are buts. A raft of new signings. Team has to gel. Still early in the season. Sturridge still injured. Team getting used to the absence of Stevie G in the dressing room. New captain.  So - incoherent.

Rodgers is gonna be feeling the pressure, it's the nature of the business he's in at this level. But it's still early days in the season. Can Lovren improve or have we seen the best of him (at Southampton)?

Liverpool Football Club
On the 6 October 2010 FSG agreed to buy English Premier League football club Liverpool F.C.[5] from owners George N. Gillett, Jr. and Tom Hicks, after the board voted 3-2 to oust them from the club.[9] It purchased through subsidiary, "N.E.S.V. I, LLC" (incorporated in Delaware) and UK based holding company "UKSV Holdings Company Limited". In the 2015-2016 FSG let Liverpool F.C. Manager Brendan Rodgers make a series of terrible decisions, to go with the terrible decisions he had made in his previous seasons, leaving fans in a confused state as to why he is still in charge at the club despite only averaging 5th position in the league in his tenure. Rodgers has been allowed free-reign to loan out players who cost £20 Million and £16 Million respectively who were only at the club for one season. And were both criminally under/mis-used in that time, and have been made to appear to be the 'fall guys' for last season. The fans have expressed their anger on social media over Brendan Rodgers' tactics, choice of players signed and prices paid for them and his increasingly poor decisions regarding substitutions during matches [10]

So... Balotelli scores a stunner minutes into his Milan debut.

Make note of all of the circumstances. It's teams depleted by the international break- I get that. Balotelli may have some motivation that LFC couldn't provide- I get that.

The indisputable facts are in his positioning and use. His talent is insane. It's not developed as a lone striker.

Rodgers fucked this up badly. I firmly believe that he set out to prove a point to the transfer committee by "proving" Balotelli was useless. That kid, as messed up as he is, has incredible talent. The players around him last year could have been set up to allow him to have a modicum of success.

Benteke is going to get far more rope because he doesn't have the baggage and he is more suited to the lone striker role. Make no mistake- he can't be any more successful without the next level of support. Rodgers is the Bobby Valentine of this league- he needs to prove he's smarter than everybody else, even at the expense of his own side.
