On face, this doesn't seem like a bad deal for Pittsburgh.  I'd offer the same to Not-so-big game James as a starting point.
Who's next on your acquisition list after Shields's agent hangs up on you?

He's been roughly a 4 win-per-season guy for the last four years.  3/39 isn't even in the right area code for a realistic opening offer.

even other FA pitchers are getting sick of waiting for Lester to sign...perhaps more will follow soon.  just wishing/hoping...

yes, seems like a good deal.  Hopefully the Red Sox get something similar done with McCarthy

How about 4/70?

I'm a Liriano fan for signing this deal.

The Pirates resurrected his career and made him a staff ace again. He could have left for more money -- this was a perfect opportunity, and the Lester deal is going to reset the market -- but chose to stay with a winning club and a larger role. Good on him, I suppose.

First A.J. Burnett and now (presumably) Liriano leave money on the table to sign with Pittsburgh.

Besides the gorgeous ballpark and recent success, the Pirates must be doing something right to get people to stay or return.

I like Liriano well enough, but who are these teams assumed to be ponying up bigger offers?  Seems like there's too much pitching around to be the GM that goes above $3/39 for a 31 year old who had an fWAR of 1.6 last year and projects to 2.2 wins next year.

We're living in a world where Rocky Nolasco, at a similar age, got 4/$49M last year.

I'm pretty sure Liriano could have gotten more (than he did).

Edit: Nolasco had points for consistency (how'd that work out?), but still.

The Pirates' pitching coach (Ray Searage) is a wizard and has gotten great results out of immortals like Vance Worley, Jeff Locke, and Edinson Volquez, along with the aforementioned Burnett and Liriano. How soon we forget that Burnett was an abject disaster in NY and was traded to the Pirates in a salary dump, and Liriano was always hurt and pitched to a 5+ ERA in the AL Central for the 4 years before moving to the senior circuit. The Pirates are also very aggressive with shifting and defense-related baseball analytics, and play in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Liriano's contract numbers were probably held down a little bit by the Pirates' QO, but there's something to be said for talented guys wanting to stay in a place where they've been successful.

I'm not sure there was that much of a market for liriano anyways. As a guy entering his age 31 season who can only be counted on for 160 innings and would cost a draft pick, I don't think an outside team would have been willing to go much higher than 3/39 with so many other options for starting pitchers
