Congrats to him either way. I suspect Mazzulla's bench is going to be a career rocket ship for the next half decade or so.
Yes, had been trying to get a head coaching job for awhile. Glad the Cs gig put him over the top.Good for him. Certainly paid his dues.
Unless he goes to LAL... we know LeBron loves him.Keeps JJ Redick at ESPN/ABC, which is helpful to our viewing pleasure.
JJ doesn't mind correcting the nitwits that surround him (Perk, SAS, Doris, etc)
No. Unless there is an outlier the general rule is that playoff teams allows their assistants to interview and accept head jobs of non-playoff teams but continue to honor their contract through the end of the season. During his non-Celtics practice/game time is when he’ll be doing his Hornets prep for assembling his staff, preparing schedules, etc.Do they leave in the middle of the playoffs when this happens? I hope JJ is smart enough and self-aware enough to know that the LAL job with an aging LeBron isn't the best introduction into high level coachingUnless he goes to LAL... we know LeBron loves him.
Lee is still the top assistant through the playoffs.Who's the top Assistant now? Cassell? I was hoping he'd get the HC gig here (whatever, it's worked out with Mazz) and I suspect he'll get a shot down the line.
Right, but afterwards?Lee is still the top assistant through the playoffs.
If JJ really wants to coach (and it sounds like he does) he probably would benefit from being on someone's staff but if he's offered a coaching job, I'm sure he'd just take it.Wouldn't JJ benefit from working on a staff before he jumps to an HC position? Maybe he fills Lee's spot for Mazzulla next year (although I agree he's excellent in his media role).
Yeah, this has to be the most coveted top assistant job around (or at least I would think)I doubt Mazzulla will have trouble now attracting the next top assistant candidates who are available.
Good team, interesting offensive and defensive schemes, good vibes, and led immediately to a HC job for Lee. Checks the boxes.Yeah, this has to be the most coveted top assistant job around (or at least I would think)
I have no basis for saying this but I've been assuming that part of the reason JJ has been making the career moves he has the last few years is so some owner will give him a head coaching job without having to do his time as an assistant. Since there are 20,000 assistant coaches out there and it can be hard to break through going that route. If JJ really wants to coach (and it sounds like he does) he probably would benefit from being on someone's staff but if he's offered a coaching job, I'm sure he'd just take it.
BTW, seems like Mazzulla has an eye for talent on the coaching side as well as being a complete psycho.
To take one example, JJ was always all-in on Mazzulla, even right when he became a HC. I think Joe's reputation around the league is much stronger than his reputation on Twitter and this board.Last summer when this staff was coming together I wondered how much of assembling this group was Joe's doing and how much was Brad's. Which is not to suggest the two weren't on the same page. And I can imagine a scenario where the two had conversations about what they were looking for in Assistants, and then Brad did more of the "If that's what we want, we should go get Sam Cassell and Charles Lee." And then Brad was pretty involved in the outreach and the recruiting.
Maybe in part because I'm guessing that as of last summer, Brad had way more relationships around the league, and more of a sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the people who were out there.
I believe that Joe was also a finalist for the Utah job? I think he was one of the top 3 (eventually went to Will Hardy). To take one example, JJ was always all-in on Mazzulla, even right when he became a HC. Yes, the Cs are extremely well-positioned at the organizational level overallI believe that Joe was also a finalist for the Utah job? I think he was one of the top 3 (eventually went to Will Hardy).
I agree with your post but I also think 'Stache is right. I would imagine that Brad has way more connections in the NBA coaching world just because he has been doing it a lot longer than Joe
Wouldn't "top assistant" likely be Cassell's job, with the new hire slotting into Cassell's current role?Yeah, this has to be the most coveted top assistant job around (or at least I would think)

He's not the choice I would have gone with.So he’s a General?
Well, I know how you answered in the P&G poll about reading threads now, as it was covered in the 3rd post in this threadNo. Unless there is an outlier the general rule is that playoff teams allows their assistants to interview and accept head jobs of non-playoff teams but continue to honor their contract through the end of the season. I’ve been to P&G about 3x in the last 5 years and if I said anything like this I sure don’t recall.Well, I know how you answered in the P&G poll about reading threads now, as it was covered in the 3rd post in this thread
Wtf is this about? I saw a new thread, read the top of the thread which posed a question that I knew the answer to so I responded to assist a fellow SoSHer.Well, I can definitely confirm that @HomeRunBaker never reads a thread and just posts in it
For @Ale Xander, we definitely have our differences, but we've also PM'd a little before as well, so I'm slowly leaning to a gentler view

Right. He’s saying that I don’t read through an entire thread prior to responding. He’s right bc I was kinda busy and god for fuckin-bid, didn’t scroll through prior to trying to help. Bull shit call outs like that dissuade people from engaging and helping others. Such a great use of time to weed out that critical error. I haven’t even read to see who it was that posted it as I just logged on as I was grabbing my Chipotle but whoever it is you can SMD or PM me and we can discuss….then you can SMD.Answered at 8:43am ET
I think his post was all in good fun - P&G after all - but I can’t be 100% certainRight. He’s saying that I don’t read through an entire thread prior to responding. Starter went on our “local” 2nd car that the wife took today so I had to go pick her up. Put the steaks back, tried to start a car in 90 degree sun and wanted to grab something quick before the game. Obv not in best of moods but if it was in fun I apologize it caught me the wrong way.You had me until Chipotle.
No it wasn’t. He’s a prick. He made sure to clarify this.I think his post was all in good fun - P&G after all - but I can’t be 100% certain
That seems pretty unfair to me. Have you watched his long form interview series with Lebron? The guy really understands the game and the players and is respected by the players, as evidenced by the stories Lebron was willing to share, and him going in for that show in the first place. Pretty sure he can still be an effective coach for today's players, even if he lacks sufficient respect for players who've been out of the league for decades.Wait are people talking about Jj Reddick as a Celtics coach?
JJ "Cousy played against plumbers" Reddick, Jj "Bird was not one of the greatest shooters" Reddick? I dislike the guy in his media. His whole thing is to overcompensate for being a privileged white guy by attacking white guys who played in the past.
Late response sorry but according to Cassell, he came to BOS because Joe had seen him work-out some folks and wanted to know his methods. Cassell said that they had mutual friends and "Joe made this happen." https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2023/07/10/sam-cassell-celtics-nba-basketball-joe-mazzulla-brad-stevens/Last summer when this staff was coming together I wondered how much of assembling this group was Joe's doing and how much was Brad's. Don't know about Lee.
That's quite the euphimism for calling entire decades of pros "plumbers and fireman". Set aside how wrong, and intentionally dishonest his claims about the 60s NBA are. Cousy is an icon who helped create a league that continues to employ JJ. His comments show a lack of judgment and a selfishness, and desire to gain attention that show questionable character. He comes across as a shitty person, and there is a self serving pattern. I can't conceive of a good reason to say such a thing. The team that Cousy played for, that also owes much to him and should protect his legacy, not insult him by hiring the guy who ignorantly diminished his contributions to hoops. If they do hire JJ it will lower the respect I have for the franchise. I expect there is black guy who didn't have the good fortune to be fastracked like JJ, who deserves a shot before him. Earning Lebron's favor serves Jj Reddick, so no doubt he is careful to avoid offending Lebrongsince being in his good graces is critical to the advancment of JJ Reddick. He is liked by Lebron, who also seems to hold the goverment of China in high regard. Lebron is far more likley to respond to somebody who is good for Lebron, than base his decisions on the deep hoops respect. The only motivation to treat Bob Cousy with repsect would be a sense of basic human decency. How can Bob Cousy help JJ's career? Crossing the line and disrepecting a legend in his 90s could possible go viral and curry the favor of current players.even if he lacks sufficient respect for players who've been out of the league for decades.
