Edit 2: what can’t we measure about defense? Who says we can’t? Bergeron has slipped defensively from various different metrics I’ve seen. Still an elite player, but seems like he’s using his super powers differently the past couple yearsNHL GMs had some discussion today about eliminating offsides altogether, according to Gary Bettman.
I find this interesting. Teams like Toronto or Pittsburgh would likely just plant a forward on the opponents net and accept 8-7 games every night, but I wonder if a combination of dropping the current offsides rule completely, but then restoring the double-blue-line offsides (or something similar to reduce sniping) would help?Y’all...

Teams could stick a forward at the opposition blue line now and no one does that.I find this interesting. How much cap space does this clear? I was hoping that the Leafs would have to make some tough moves to stay under the cap - this looks to offset that. Bummer.Patrick Marleau and Leafs 1st/7th next year traded to Carolina for a 6th. The 1st is top 10 protected and turns into a 2021 1st if it’s top 10.
$6.25 million AAV cleared with the Marleau trade, but they still have work to do. They’re sitting on $13.5 million in cap space. They reportedly have extensions done with Kapanen and Johnsson, totaling ~$6.8 million. So that means they’re at ~$6.7 million in space. Marner is asking for $11.5 million. He may not get that much, but should get north of $10 million. They still have to clear out a bunch to fit him in, and that’s before getting into losing Jake Gardiner and trying to replace him and upgrade the defense. How much cap space does this clear? They also have 7 D not including Byram.Avs have close to $40m in cap space now....wonder what they’re up to
That means Bergy will get his own wing right?3 Selke’s I’d guess.
Carbonneau in is one of the biggest jokes I have seen. Nice player and he was very good defensively put he put up weak stats in the 80's when scoring was really high.So how is Guy Carbonneau a HoF?
This is bananas trade for Toronto. They get out of that horrible contract and term but they actually get a player who might be worse that was qualified at a higher cap hit than Zaitsev. It's easy to think it's to lose the term but Toronto's real cap crunch is this year. Bizarre.Sounds like Toronto is trading Zaitsev plus a sweetener to Ottawa for Cody Ceci on 7/1 once Zaitsev’s bonus is paid.
