Same. That deal should have been done in Foxboro.Damn it all. Loved Jakobi. Seems like reasonable money, too. Godspeed, Mr. Meyers.
Trade for Hopkins, draft JSN at 14 and sign Orlando Brown Jr. Basically the only pathway for their offense not to decrease in talent from an already depleted unit last year. Pretty feasible, let's see if they do it.I think the Pats absolutely need to trade for Hopkins now. Otherwise, there's nothing left out there to fill the Meyers void.
The whole spending spree that off-season seemed to be Kraft reacting to Brady winning in Tampa, no? It certainly didn’t work and I suspect the Pats are back to their old model of trying to find value. Of course, without a great core and the GOAT, I’m not sure how compelling a place to play New England is anymore. To piss away the amount of money they did on useless entities like Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor and then hold tight on an actually productive guy in Meyers doesn't make any sense to me.
Outside of a couple of nice Randy Moss years, what's different in the latter stages of his career? Bill has never spent money on this position.BB's handling of the WR position in the latter stages of his career has been pretty rough to watch.
I'd be less upset by this if I had any faith at all in the team's ability to evaluate WRs in the draft.
BB would rather have the draft pick compensation? To piss away the amount of money they did on useless entities like Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor and then hold tight on an actually productive guy in Meyers doesn't make any sense to me.
I think it's a bad approach in 2023. Just look around the league, what are the young thriving QBs that don't have top tier weapons around them? Can't build a roster as if you had Tom Brady with Mac Jones going into year 3.Outside of a couple of nice Randy Moss years, what's different in the latter stages of his career? Yeah, less than I thought he might get but tough to get too worked up over it. Good for him though.Completely reasonable deal, but I'm not broken up about it. While he was their best receiver, he simply isn't a difference maker.
Meyers was nice, but he was here last year and everyone still agrees the offense needs a makeover.I think it's a bad approach in 2023. OK but he was the best receiver in 2021 and he was pretty good with Cam in 2020 too. He'll help out any offense and this is not crazy money. Obviously nothing to do if he wanted to leave but I'm upset.Meyers was nice, but he was here last year and everyone still agrees the offense needs a makeover.
Go get Hopkins or Jeudy, maybe JSN in the draft.
That's the challenge. They need multiple receivers and not a ton out there in FA. Are they going to use two top picks on WRs via trade/draft?Go get Hopkins or Jeudy, maybe JSN in the draft.
What evidence is there that he wanted to stay?To piss away the amount of money they did on useless entities like Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor and then hold tight on an actually productive guy in Meyers doesn't make any sense to me.
The post I responded to specifically talked about Bill not willing to spend at WR, so I'm not solely talking about Meyers. But while Meyers wasn't a difference maker, he was basically forced into being a number one option because the team lacked talent at the position. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see him have better production on a similar number of targets in an offense that throws the ball more often and has an alpha at the position to pull attention away from him in the slot. Meyers is a good player, he's the best receiver they had, if you let him go you better pay/draft at least two guys that are better, otherwise you're stuck in mud. And it's not even a given that said players would gel with Mac/the system as well as Meyers did. He had more yards in his first four seasons than Deion Branch, I think the guy is severely underestimated, 65-80 catch 750-850 yard receivers don't grow on trees, not even at his current contract.Meyers was nice, but he was here last year and everyone still agrees the offense needs a makeover.

Basically all the coaches he worked most closely with most of his career. Lombardi was his WRs coach, Josh his OC“Their coaches”
This is definitely an underpay honestly, Kirk money wasn't likely, but if he held out for the best offer he probably gets $15M a year with $20M+ guaranteed from someone. This deal both in $ and timing certainly indicates a guy who wanted to play in a certain system for certain guys. And to think some thought he might get Kirk money. This was far more in line with reality.
Who’s gettable that fits this criteria?I may be in the minority here but i want nothing to do with Hopkins. Been injured the last 2 years and is entering the age range when WR’s begin their decline. To top it off he and O’Brien have had a rocky relationship at best. I would much prefer to trade for someone younger with less baggage.
Studham?Meyers / Renfrow could be a very, very cool combination. I was with a few SoSHers when we missed out drafting him, getting Meyers instead. I loved the converted QB to slot receiver story, it was like Edelman 2.0. Alas, it was never quite the same and now both Meyers and Renfrow will be running like little bees catching passes from whoever is replacing the injured Jimmy G that game.
Clearly left money on table but how much, who knows. Disappointing for Pats since it impacts comp picks, no?This is definitely an underpay honestly, Kirk money wasn't likely, but if he held out for the best offer he probably gets $15M a year with $20M+ guaranteed from someone. Is Tee Higgins gettable? I don’t think Cincy can pay him given who they have to pay there. For that to make sense, the pats would have to sign him ofcourse.Who’s gettable that fits this criteria?
Jeudy?
100% agree. Would prefer they target Jeudy.I may be in the minority here but i want nothing to do with Hopkins. Amusingly 7th is.... Kendrick Bourne (4th if you just do his 2 years as a Patriot)Just want to note that ESPN's player tracking metrics have Meyers 10th in the NFL from 2020-22, with the same score as Hopkins and Cooper Kupp. Main difference is Meyers doesn't produce YAC.
I don't think he's that good as this doesn't quite pass the smell test, but it might not be a slam dunk upgrade to switch Meyers for Hopkins.

All would be forgiven if they pull Lamar. And then some. This is a very reasonable deal, especially when compared with the Agholor signing. NE has cap space, not only this year, but gobs of it next year. Some of that in 2024 will be eaten up by likely extensions for Dugger/Bentley/Onwenu, but something isn't adding up here. NE may not always spend the actual dollar outlays in a given year, but they're always pretty close to the cap. Maybe I'm wishcasting, but not signing Meyers to a completely manageable deal (and one that they basically aready did with Agholor), strikes me as them needing the room for something else, and there isn't much else out there that is particularly exciting at this point in time.
Lamar is coming.
