HECV doesn't work on my windows 10 laptop (64 bit) is there a safe converter to MP4 out there?

Hi, I have a great laptop that I use for all things including making mp4 videos from pictures and videos of events I attended.

Yesterday, I had an intern follow me and local first repsonders to all of our school district schools and we did our annual Hi 5 for Heroes event. He showed me some of the content he filmed on his phone and it looked great. He sent me a zip drive this morning and I ran into problems.

when I opened the zip with all the numerous files, a pop up went up indicating HEVC wasn't compatable and I need to upload off the microsoft store a codec update to allow my 64 bit windows 10 laptop to view the file. It was only 99 cents so no biggie. However, when I attempted to download that file, I got another pop up saying not compatable.

I did a quick google and found a bunch of free converters and codec uploads, but they look shakey and like they would be vectors for malware.

Any one have a solution? I would love to make the files jpg or MP4 to use on movie maker which is my only video editor I have ever used (I know, I take some ribbing) but I maybe make 3 videos a year.

Thank you in advance.
