Game 1 Philly, goats

1. Mac Jones. I think his first quarter was the worst stretch of football he has played in his whole career. Three playes, three straight bad passes, and the game was lost. First he had Douglas on a slant for a first down and he threw high, incomplete. Then he threw high to Bourne and the ball went off Bourne's hands for a pick 6. Then he threw a screen to Zeke high, Zeke caught it but was hit and fumbled. Then Mac had a couple of three and outs before finally getting his act together and playing very well for parts of the final three quarters, but still failing to get the job done in the 4th. If not for his terrible start, this is a Pats win. The Mac who played in the middle of this game deserved a better fate. Threw for 300 yards, 3 TDs, some nice throws. But he was terrible at the start and not good enough late.

2. Kayshon Boutte. His line from the game - 4 targets, 0 catches - does not tell the full story. Two of the targets were deep balls where he didn;t have a chance to make a play. The other two passes he caught for what should have been key conversions on third/fourth and long plays - except that he fucking only got one foot down in bounds. The replays made it seem as if he wasn;t even trying to drag the second foot on either catch. The second one would have converted a 4th down late and given them first and got from inside the 10. I'm wondering if this guy is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

3. Bill O'Brien. The Pats had a second and three in Eagle territory and BOB decided that the thing to do was run the ball twice, for nothing, and then have Mac throw it on 4th down. Drive ended.

----------
Judon had a sack early when Philly inexplicably had no one block him, but he and Uche were mostly invisible.

On the plus side, the defense played well. The only Philly touchdowns were a pick six and on a short field after the Zeke fumble. Otherwise they held their own and even forced a key turnover late.

Christian Gonzalez played a strong all around game. Gave up some ctaches but he was up against AJ Brown. He even had a sack and a pass defensed on a 4th down play that got the Pats their last possession.

Keion White flashed early getting but the Pats pass rush was less of a factor in the second half.

Peppers had several big hits, forced a fumble, and came over and broke up a TD on a deep ball where the corner was beat and he provided safety help.

Another big plus: the offensive line. Two rookie guards and one new Patriot who didn't play in camp (Anderson). All of them made their mistakes, and the Pats weren't running a lot of slow developing pass plays, and I don;t think their run blocking was good, but when Mac dropped back, it was generally into a cleaner pocket than what he had all last year. Mafi got beat once and picked up a critical drive killing penalty, Sow got beat a couple of times, and Anderson got a successful 2-point conversion called back because he got beat and then held.

Somewhere
I’m going to go:

1) Running game. The Patriots couldn’t do a damn thing against an Eagles defense that was playing for the pass almost the entire game. Elliott fumbled and Rham couldn’t make it past the LOS most of the time. I don’t know if it was the line or the backs, or what share of the blame belongs to whom but they absolutely constituted no threat whatsoever. Huge letdown for what should have been a strength.

2) Mac Jones. He was bad in the first, good in the second, okay thereafter. And that’s pretty much what he is, right? Not enough for this game at least.

3) Boutte. Could pick a few receivers but his goof was simple awareness. Also the other guys had mistakes but made up for it with some good plays too.

The running game and play calling didn't get it done. A moral failing? Absolutely but they may still have time to recover.

Maybe it's just me but it didn't look like the easiest thing in the world to get those feet down for Boutte, especially the second one.

Take the FG.

--Mac was awful early and better late, though he got bailed out quite a few times along the way.

Sweat dropped a pretty easy pick 6 and immediately after Hunter Henry saved him on a terrible 4th down throw. Numbers looked better than the play, and his arm is still a noodle.

Was hoping that could be coached up a bit, but looked like Chad Pennington just before they declare him out for the season with another rotator cuff tear.

-- Running game was rough to watch. Stevenson didn't have much but was also not good

-- D will keep them in a decent number of games if they stay healthy.

The goat is the offense. 13 drives which saw 5 punts, 2 turnovers, and 3 failed 4th down conversions.

You don’t win NFL games with 3 scoring drives.

I don’t think it’s worth arguing about who specially wears the horns. Even those who had good games had a couple of awful plays (see: Bourne, Henry).

Boutte. One of the most amazing things about watching the NFL (to me) is how consistently WRs get their feet inbounds on sideline catches, it seems to be almost automatic and I just can't comprehend the hand eye coordination, body control and situational awareness to make it happen. When a receiver makes the catch and fails to get their feet down it's almost shocking. To see it happen twice in one game, to the same receiver, both times ending the drive, it's awful.

I think this was mostly an encouraging game if the question was whether there is something to build on here. If the question was whether this team will make the playoffs, the answer is less encouraging - how many winnable games can a team in the Pats situation afford to throw away.

I also think this game didn't do much to assuage doubts about Mac. But this year is looking like it will be the fair evaluation year that Mac didn;t get a year ago. There's enough talent around him and a real offensive scheme, so his success or failure will be on him.

Last year the Eagles:

The Patriots - missing two of their OL starters and presumably #1 WR (Parker):

- Held last year's #3 offense to just 251 yards (they averaged 389 a game last year)
- Held last year's #3 offense to just 18 points (they averaged 28.1 a game last year)
- Gained 382 yards on last year's #2 defense (they allowed 301.0 a game last year)
- Scored 20 points on last year's #2 defense (they allowed 20.2 a game last year)

Overall, that's pretty damned encouraging to me.

Situational football, not taking the FG down 8 with a lot of time left and not punting on 4th and 17 when you had the 2min warning and 3 TO. Should have pinned them inside the 20.
Better coaching decisions and the game is tied late in the 4th that was the 5pt swing.

I am not super down on this loss, but it really sucks to have the eagles be in a position to give one to us and to fail. I will point this out though:

Mac is in his third season and still doesnt have a win when the other team scores 25 or more points.

Here
Bill for not taking the points
I think it was a pretty close statistical decision and don’t have a strong opinion on it either way, but I’ll take it as a good sign if it means we have aggressive Bill back. That’ll be beneficial overall.

They played a team that was in the super bowl and despite starting down 16-0 played them pretty close. Hard for me to justify a goat here. The defense played well. Mac played like shit for the first quarter then turned it around. I'm a doomer lately and was pretty satisfied with what they had here.

Aggressive Bill is a Bill that believes in his offense. And if he believes in it, that encourages me. It was SO depressing when he would just...give up and not try on offense because he knew they had no shot. Clearly he thinks they have a legit NFL offense again.

Stevenson had a bad day running, but made some plays catching the ball with 6 catches on 6 targets for 64 yards, so I will only give him a baby goat. True goats:

- Mac. 1st quarter counts, and I thought he missed some plays in the 4th. And Henry bailed him out big time.

- Refs for destroying a Pats drive with a needless holding call that wasn't particularly close.

- Boutte should have made at least one of those catches. But those are the type of mistakes that can be coached out of a rookie WR.

- Zeke for the fumble. Ball security matters.

D brought their A game. May have left a couple of plays on the field, but they were matched up against the league's varsity. I thought the 2 rookies on the OL, and the rookies in general acquitted themselves well given the circumstances.

And it was nice to see some real plays called by the offensive coordinator.

Its worth noting that its the first week of the NFL season and thus far QB play overall has been about as mixed as Mac's performance imo. Its still possible that we see more growth as he and BOB get reacquainted in real game situations.

I do agree with you that this season he won't have Matty P to blame anymore. For better or worse this year all on him. Today was a bit of everything and that typically doesn't get it done for QBs looking to consistently win games.

around the way
Frankly I was encouraged that they had a chance in the end losing the turnover battle. Offensive line was pretty fantastic, especially the guardplay. Can't run block for shit, so goat there I guess. But the pass pro was excellent. Mac was up and down but found a lot of receivers, who were surprisingly open often. Mac’s awful play in the beginning coincided with awful conditions. Hang him on the cross if you must, but a lot of good tonight overall.

Loved Gonzo. For his first NFL game, he was fine. Made a couple of impactful plays. Never got beat deep. Kids going to be a stud.

Most people wrote in losses for Philly and KC anyway. Let’s see how Mac does against MIA, NYJ, etc. If he doesn’t get it done against those teams, he’s probably not the future.

The offense. Defense gave them two opportunities at midfield to win the game and they got themselves into fourth and long twice and could not convert.

I'm honestly struggling to single out some major culprits for this loss. I think the team as a whole played close to as good a game as they could play and they came up short. Boutte was terrible in the opportunities he had, so he needs to be on he list, but other than that I can't think of anybody.

Against the #3 defense in the NFL, Mac Jones - with a beat up and subpar offensive line, no running game, and his WR1 out (and apparently not a great group of receivers anyway) - went 35-54 (64.8%) for 316 yds, 2 td, and 1 int and the team scored 20 points.

Meanwhile, against a defense ranked #20 in points allowed and #14 in yards allowed last year, Joe Burrow - with elite players all around him - went 14-31 (45.2%) for 82 yds, 0 td, and 0 int, and the team scored 3 points.

Yeah it’s a crazy game week to week.

Of course if Mac could be 65% of Burrow overall we’d be a different, much better team.

And let’s be real for a second… 316 yards on 54 attempts is not good. It’s terrible, actually.

It was more encouraging than not, especially considering what the team was last year and all the OL injuries.

The discouraging part is being right there with multiple chances to win in the end and not getting it done.

The running game gets infinitely easier to defend when you know the QB can't beat you. I think that was part of it

If I was grading Mac, I would give him a C-. That unforced interception was an awful throw, and he couldn't close the deal in the 4th despite having some opportunities. Unlike last season, however, there is some optimism. But it's on him going forward.

This is it. Not one person but the offense as a whole. They put them down early with two costly turnovers and couldn’t get it done with the defense giving them multiple opportunities. More of the same as last year unfortunately. It’s not all on him, but Mac sure looks pretty damned rattled when they play from behind. They get close and he Tommy Boys it up.

Why do these posts? It’s like saying Alex Verdugo went 3-4 with a HR and Ronald Acuña was 0-4 with 3ks.

Goat to the non FG. The reffing wasn’t great for us, but we also got away on a non call on Philly’s last 4th down play.

After having it be the major worry all offseason, was great to have the OL not be the major reason they lost. As well, after losing a couple of key players before the game, glad there seemed to be no other injuries.

What it feels like to me with Mac is that he's really struggled in his career to get over that hump. He's done this many times now - played just well enough to lose, made just enough of a comeback to lose. It may never click with him. Maybe he'll always be that kind of QB.

But...

If it ever DOES click...once (if) he gets the experience of capping one of these games with an actual winning drive, I think it's really going to change who he is as a QB, and he's going to become one of those guys that just has figured out how to WIN.

But it has to start somewhere, and winning one of these kinds of games HAS to happen.

I like the optimism, but I don’t buy it. I don’t think he needs a win to “click”. I get the feeling he just doesn’t have the physical ability to conjure up wins when it’s close and late and every play is magnified. I hope I’m wrong.

Mac- Horrendous first quarter, and the pic 6 was an awful throw . His rallying to decent overall performance doesn’t mitigate the big role he played in digging the early hole . And I just fear his lack of arm talent is too significant to be overcome by other qualities.

Coaching- a really bad decision to not kick the FG in the 4th quarter, set up by a brutally conservative play call on 3rd down. That cried out for play action, and a shot at the end zone.

In a vacuum, this loss doesn’t really bother me that much. They recovered, competed hard, and took a good team to the last possession. And there is definitely reason to feel good about the defense. But they just don’t ever seem to be able to close the deal on these games under Mac. And that level of just good enough to lose mediocrity could bury them with their early schedule.

I continue to reject the idea that you couldn't evaluate Mac after last year. I think by the end of this campaign we will all be saying he is who we thought he was. I wish they had cut bait and drafted a QB this year.

He didn't lose the game by himself. He also didn't do enough to win it. Same as it ever was.

The game was much closer than I thought I was going to be, so there's that.

But this team has basically been losing games like this (particularly against good teams) for three straight years now. They hang around but make too many mistakes down the stretch and ultimately they can't close the deal.

I don't have an answer as to why, but a team that for 20 years basically found ways to wait for the other team to make the killer mistake, makes so many killer mistakes now. Over and over and over again.

I am not sure I fully understand your argument here. He had enough physical ability to throw beautiful touchdown passes to Bourne (twice) and Henry (once). He threw some passes with real zip and some with real touch and some with real precision. If he has enough talent to throw those passes, he has enough to throw those passes.

I think in the end, he was under more pressure than he had been earlier in the game. That'll make it hard on anyone - Jalen Hurts struggled when the Pats put pressure on him too. (I'm NOT saying Mac is as good as Hurts)

But I do think that Mac needs more around him to go right than maybe other QBs do, and if that stuff isn't there, he doesn't have enough ability on his own to pull out these games. Maybe that's more what you mean.

Here's the thing about close losses to good teams - when they keep happening, they aren't encouraging. This isn't a Pats team that was terrible the last couple of years and is on it's way up to the point where we can be happy that we were competitive with a top tier super bowl contender. This is a perfectly average Pats team, just like the last 3 years. We're a team that generally beats the bad teams and loses to the good ones, often in close games. Was it encouraging in 2021 when we lost to Tampa by 2, or to Dallas in OT? Or in 2022 when we lost to GB in OT, or to Minnesota by one score, or to Vegas on a fluke play, or to Cincy by 4? At some point close losses to good teams aren't a sign of good things to come, they are a sign that we aren't good enough right now.

I'll be encouraged when we actually beat a good team. Over the last two years, we are 3-9 against playoff teams. Their three wins were against Buffalo (in the frozen game when we attempted like two passes), Miami (when Tua was hurt), and Tennessee (when Derrick Henry, AJ Brown and Julio Jones were all hurt). At best we're a competitive team that can't get it done when it counts against the strongest teams.

Very well stated.

The offense and BB

Defense and ST were pretty good
BB should have taken the 3 points

where the darn libs live
They played a team that was in the super bowl and despite starting down 16-0 played them pretty close. Hard for me to justify a goat here. The defense played well. Mac played like shit for the first quarter then turned it around. I'm a doomer lately and was pretty satisfied with what they had here.
Yeah, I was texting some friends that I was done with Mac after the first quarter. Fortunately, I'm an idiot.
