I like that they're being proactive and trying something. They're a top line winger short right now. Gagne getting the first crack at filling the role is fine by me. Hopefully either he can do the job or Pastrnak lights it up in Providence and can come up. It's better to try all the internal options before making a panic trade.

I have no problem with this.  He's not a top 6 winger anymore most likely but he could still potentially be better than some of the kids they are playing right now with his experience.  It is worth a shot.

So does this replace the obligatory "Second half of the season flyer on a potential impact player at a position where they lack experience and/or depth for cheap money" move?  Cause I'm okay with doing this to start the season rather than end it.

We can only hope.

Seems inevitable. Maybe they feel more comfortable about him being in game shape now. He should be on the 4th line ideally, but I half expect him to end up on the first line which will drive me insane.

If he's on the 1st line the team's problems are more serious than they appear.  Although Claude may rotate him in there situationally if needed.

As noted, it's cheap enough that if he doesn't cut it, they can move on.  The disappointment is not in this move; it's just that none of the Baby B's made much of an impact in the early going. Sometimes the competition can work wonders, though.

Gagne has decide to not return this year. B's are placing him on the suspended list. I'm a little confused as to why they're suspending Gagne as opposed to having him retire. I'm not 100% sure what the cap ramifications are but as I recall from the Thomas debacle, suspended players remain on the cap.

Thanks. That's weird, I could've sworn it was the opposite during the Thomas fiasco but maybe that was due to the 35+ thing.

A quick googling showed it was because Thimas was a 35+ contract, so he counted against the cap no matter what happened.

I'm glad that Gagne will not play the rest of this season.  His level of skill was replacement-level, and I'd rather give a young guy a shot.
I'm incredibly sorry that the reason that he is not playing is the loss of his father.  I hope the time he's taking for recovery, healing, and family is as successful as it can be.

So does this clear 600k of cap space? Or is it more like 300k since the season is half over?  Or does it clear nothing?

The remainder of his contract is not counted against the salary cap.  I do not know if the not-counting is moment-of-suspension forward or whether its retroactive to his last game played or when the officially took leave.

I hope this extended time helps him get his head/family to where they need to be.

That said, I don't know if this truly impacted Fraser move or not, but I hope not. Perhaps they were just ready to move on from Fraser.
