Yeah, I'll hold my hand up on this one...sheesh.I'm getting an England v Cameroon (1990 World Cup QFs) vibe out of this game...late equalizer followed by the winner in extra time?

This covers both sides of the coin:The narrative that Iceland is a hapless minnow will surely continue if they hang on in all of the delirious England self-flagellation. But, you know, when a team keeps churning out result after result that causes everyone who plays them to say, "I can't believe we lost to them," maybe at some point it's appropriate to give them credit.
Iceland had a fantastic Euro qualification campaign. Everyone wanted to say that the Netherlands just sucks, but maybe Iceland deserves a bit more credit for kicking their asses twice. Good results against Turkey, Austria, Portugal. This is a good side.
Sounds very viking.Don't know if they caught it on other broadcasts, but an Icelandic dude just launched the corner flag into the crowd. Very cool moment that looked awfully dangerous. ICELAND!!
Yeah it's a good squad, and they are built for a tourney in that they have a ton of veterans who have played together. However.... England should beat them, they have a better and deeper talent pool. I think of them as similar to a team like Ireland. The narrative that Iceland is a hapless minnow will surely continue if they hang on in all of the delirious England self-flagellation. I could've sworn I heard "shameful" and "absurd" but I was admittedly laughing too hard for the last ten minutes to accurately quote it."It was a calamitous, clueless display."
Tell us how you really feel, Ian.
The point is, Iceland had a plan, they all knew the plan, and the executed it to perfection. England don't look like they have a plan.Yeah it's a good squad, and they are built for a tourney in that they have a ton of veterans who have played together. However.... England looked like their players had never met until last night, when they then all decided to go out and got incredibly drunk. Iceland were good but England didn't even really make them work for it.The point is, Iceland had a plan, they all knew the plan, and the executed it to perfection. Oh that is definitely true. It's why they won, they play a well planned cohesive team game, which helps you beat more talented less cohesive teams. Helps when like England the manager has no clue what to do in selection and leaves himself with problems that even if he wanted to he can't solve because his bench is just slightly different versions of the same players in the starting XI.The point is, Iceland had a plan, they all knew the plan, and the executed it to perfection. The immediate aftermath of an England tournament exit is one of life's joys.
Yeah, absolutely -- England should beat them for sure. I just wanted to point out that this is not an out of nowhere result -- my guess is the average viewer thinks that maybe Iceland is a beneficiary of the expansion of the number of slots in the tournament or the ability of third place teams to advance. But Iceland has been kicking ass for over a year now. They came really close to winning their group in qualification and they were a legitimate second place in their group in the finals, with a pretty resilient win over a very good Austria team. It's a pretty amazing story for a country with such a tiny population, and I just hope it doesn't get lost in the irresistible story, which will be England's futility.Yeah it's a good squad, and they are built for a tourney in that they have a ton of veterans who have played together. Pretty much.England looked like their players had never met until last night, when they then all decided to go out and got incredibly drunk. Iceland were good but England didn't even really make them work for it.
If Radio 5 live do a post match 606 phone in it'll be worth a listen.Iceland are rock solid. Nothing stupid. Hard to beat.
But look England were awful.
They conceded to a throw in and a simple shot. Iceland was better than an awful awful team. But even then it took a keeping mistake and a utter failure on a basic set piece.
Btw Ian Wright on tv here is fucking epic.
Oh shit yes. Hahhaah epicIf Radio 5 live do a post match 606 phone in it'll be worth a listen.
Do you wear a salmon pink shirt to the rugby with a sports jacket with leather patches on the sleeves...and chinos. And real ale...take a bit of the old speckled hen?Just to note I prefer rugby anyway
It's a little hard to know for sure what their plan was, since there were goals so early and they went from losing to winning so fast -- so it's hard to know what they would have looked like if England had equalized.Pretty much.
Everybody likes to celebrate the achievements of the little guy and you always sound like a jerk deflecting credit from the upset winner but this match really wasn't about Iceland having a great tactical plan or playing particularly well. It was 90% England just being complete garbage, to an almost hilarious extent.

Every once in a while they shoot an admiral, so as to encourage the others.Twitter saying Roy has quit.
Well yeah, and England doesn't have anyone of comparable quality to Griezmann or Pogba. Probably not Coman, Giroud, Matuidi, Payet, or Kante either.so next round... Iceland versus another brilliantly talented but unsettled squad.
I think they lose if only because Payet and Griezmann bury the chances Kane and Rooney miss. If you give France 3 or 4 FKs inside 35 yards at least 1 is going in the net and they're deadly on corners.
