I can't use my laptop at the moment b/c ever since I plugged in the DVD burner to try to play a CD, w/o success, it can't connect to the wireless, which I know is still working b/c my husband can use it and I'm using it now with my phone. I have tried resetting the network adapter and a couple of other things. But nothing is working so far. Any ideas?

Unplug the DVD burner, shut down (not restart) and power back up.

That was the first thing I did. No good. Well, actually I first tried restarting, then shut down. The funny thing is that you know when you connect something you usually hear a tone and see it connected down below? That never happened this time. So I couldn't go through the usually unplugging procedure.

What exactly is happening when you try to connect to the wireless network? Does it say, "cannot connect to the wireless network," or "Connected, no internet," or does it look like it connects, but websites don't load? Or are you not seeing any wireless networks at all?

This reminds me of something I encountered about 10 years ago. I was renting a house, working remotely... but whenever someone used the microwave, the wireless signal cut out. I couldn't exactly tell my roomies to not heat up leftovers during my 2:00 Go To Meetings... I think we ended up wrapping foil around the microwave.

I can see our network, but can't connect. We have had occasional problems with our wireless ( in fact we are this morning) but that's not what was happening last night, as my husband and my phone were accessing it just fine.

Well, I don't know why, but the wireless is working again and my computer is being able to access it. All I did was connect to the internet via ethernet cable and also restart the modem. Tangentially, while on the cable, I had Lenovo do a hardware scan. For some mysterious reason, all is well at least at this moment. Thanks to the posters who tried to help.

Maybe 15-20 years ago the company that I was at was opening a satellite office. I was a manager type at this point and running point on outfitting it for tech, so countless review/design sessions, 18 hour days so I didn't miss anything. The whole shebang. I didn't miss a fucking thing. Whelp, for months after that I'd get incessant complaining about wireless performance. This was before the days of what is essentially auto-configuring wireless, so we spent countless man hours trying to track down the error. You can guess where this is going. One of the trunks heading to the access points was in the drop ceiling above the microwave. The tens of times we were over there troubleshooting apparently coincided with the microwave not being used.

What was really annoying about it is the microwave "high use" times coincide with times when there were not many people in the office. Performance issues when traffic was at a low rather than high drive me absolutely fucking insane.

Yah... it is one of those where you pretty much have to "catch it in the act". Recreate what you were doing? No problem. Same time of day? No problem. Oh, do I smell reheated salmon? Problem!

As one of my old bosses used to say-- you need to diagnose before you prescribe. And diagnosing something like that (especially in a larger office, rather than in a room next to where you hear the BEEP BEEP BEEP) can be frustrating.

Edit- More frustrating was trying to explain to the roomies that I was in the middle of a raid, so if they could refrain from having hotpockets for the next 5 hours, that would be awethome

Glad it's working now when hard wired, but just a note in your troubleshooting, when the phones are working and the wifi on your pc is not, it's likely the phones are connecting via their wireless data plan (5g, 4g etc). Best to disable your mobile data when troubleshooting a potential wireless network issue.

Now that it's working while hardwired, it looks like it could be a wireless issue afterall.

Oh, I didn't make myself clear. The Wireless is working on my laptop now, also. Although access to it is an intermittent problem which Verizon tried to solve with a new modem, which didn't change a thing. I keep wondering if someone in our area is running SOMETHING that interferes, b/c we aren't using the microwave concurrently. But when that happens, it happens to all laptops, roku, etc.
Yesterday, I was upset about a completely different problem, namely, my laptop computer not being able to use the wireless when every other device in the house could. For some mysterious reason that has stopped happening, which makes me very happy, b/c I thought I had somehow injured the laptop by plugging in that DVD burner. (By the way, I would love to use that in my car to play CDs, but now I'm afraid to plug it in anywhere. The new Volvo doesn't have a CD player. Isn't that chintzy? Maybe they have a deal with Sirius XM to make us dependent on them.)

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I thought from tBLtS that you had a car that was not very old. Does it not have Bluetooth on its stereo?
