You onside. The only way Pitt gets the ball back is by stopping Jacksonville from getting another 1st down. You still get that chance if you miss the onside. But - if you onside, you also get the chance to recover the ball.
40 yards of field position is very important too, especially when they'd have no timeouts left.

Your playing Blake Bortles, and he hasn’t thrown a interception yet. He’s due! Kick it deep man.

Any hards matter here. this is a tough call on a FG isn't it? You give Pitt a short field if you miss.

If Jags get, say, 7 yards on first three downs it's a much higher percentage FG

Funny how they talk about a kickers best effort but never take into account where it was kicked. In a dome? Down in Florida?

The Steelers are going to have to drive at least 80 yards with no timeouts and about a minute and change on the clock. Needing a TD.

Not over, but still. Looking good.

Onside kick made worse by the current score. You're not losing by 3 or 4, it's 7 points, any Jax points makes it a 2 score game. Have to kick deep there.

Except for the chance of a field goal.

Right? Last night they had the Gostkowski line and it was from when he kicked it in Mexico City, as if that is comfortably in his range.

But in both cases your opponent is punting. You want them pinned so you get better starting position. The likelihood of recovering the onside has to be outweighed by the amount of clock remaining and the chance that you just give a good FG kicker a chance to end it.

From 1933-1968 they had 13 head coaches (16 if you multiple-count those who left and then returned in a separate stint). Since then they've had 3. Crazy.

Mike Tomlin is a dimwit.
Calling a TO around 2:05 gives the other team a free passing play if they want it. So sometimes its better to wait for the 2 minute warning.

However, this is not one of those times. Jax was going to run almost for sure anyway. Tomlin is a dunce.

Guessing he held the TO’s to take pass plays off the table, although that is probably their best chance at getting a turnover.

Haley’s going to get all of the hate but Tomlin is the real problem in Pittsburgh. He avoids getting any blame because the sheer talent on the team usually masks his horrible coaching.

Your defense needs to stop the Jags if you onside or kick it deep. I get the field position argument, but you get a chance to get the ball back immediately with the onside. It is a defensible choice

Not calling a TO before the 2:00 is bad coaching.
Maybe but if you call it before the two minute warning then JAX can run or pass, either way clock stops moving at end of play. If you let it run down, then they are almost certain to run on the next two plays.
