#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

No problem. It's a bit confusing because one wouldn't assume that the NFL would literally tell someone to ignore a district court ruling, but that's what happened here.

Hahahahaha, I fucking love this entire thing.  I can't wait til it comes out that this was a Kraft and Goodell troll job to show how incompetent the sports media is.

Edit: And now I look like an idiot, just saw the other responses above.... but my point still stands.

Unfortunately this coiuld give RG the out he needs to vacate the suspension, while being able to defend himself that the Wells investigation was necessary because, you know, integrity of the game.

Hey, we all love the alternate reality where Brady came in, flipped the Commish a card with "pV = nRT" on it, and then said nothing for the duration.

Yes, I realize it could be a lot worse. However, I badly want Goodell rebuked in court, and I'm mostly convinced he would be.

If true, the fact that Brady testified under oath is brilliant.   First, it shows the public that its "more likely than not" that everything he said today was the truth, and second it said to Goodell "I'm willing to go under oath, how about you in court"?

I don't expect Brady to accept a single game suspension and think today was an absolute precursor of that.   Goodell now gets put into a harder spot where he knows the Wells report is horrendously bad, likely now believes Tom did nothing wrong and needs to figure out a way to slide away from Brady's suspension without giving ammo to Kraft to come back and ask for the team penalty to be struck as well.

That's not Goodell's biggest worry. Kraft said they won't appeal; they'll accept the penalty. Kraft changing his stance seems unlikely.

What Goodell is truly weighing is the reaction from many of the 31 other teams if he lets Brady off without missing a game. That's why it's been suspected Goodell will try to reduce the penalty to 2, or even 1, and hope Brady accepts it

I get this, but seeing Brady suit up vs the steelers (with a clean reputation no less) trumps seeing goodell go down in flames

I'm beginning to think TB will get exonerated, eventually. The NFL told Breer that AEI doesn't help TB, but with no deflation, what motive is there to conceal anything?
Not producing the phone could be that there are a lot of Deflategate-mentioning texts and calls that also contain personal stuff a celebrity doesn't want out there. And we know the "suspicious" text during the Green Bay game refers to a puffy jacket.
If TB is a great, truthful witness, and the science doesn't hold up...

Were McNally or the other guy there?

So much going against Brady here. Just too much institutional pressure for the league. Goodell can't throw Wells under the bus, because then he wasted $5 million. And he's left having taken away draft picks for no reason. The NFL bought its ticket already and I just don't see how they can do anything but ride it to the end of the line.

I agree that throwing Wells under the bus seems unlikely, I doubt it's because of the $ cost.

Question: if this ends up in court, would that be televised?

I live in northern nj and work in NYC so I have more than my share of exposure to irrational stupidity re the pats and Brady.

So, to clarify, I'd love to see Tb's rep cleared among sane, objective people. I'll take that deal

As much as I've been secretly hoping that TB12 would sweep RG off his feet and show him the light, I just don't see how RG can vacate the suspension. There is no reasonable way that he can just say "Well, Tom proved that he had no knowledge, but clearly something went on that day so the other penalties stick". He also can't say "Well, this Wells cat didn't understand the science and so bad on us, we were wrong and this whole thing was a mistake."

It has to be either total exoneration of Brady (which would then re-create momentum for the Patriots penalties to get vacated), or he is going to do nothing and say something to the effect "While I believe Tom didn't direct Patriots staff to do anything, ultimately, he is the QB and he is responsible for the footballs".

The only other option would be to vacate the Brady suspension based on Tom's testimony and "new information", and then suspending the Patriots penalties to do further research on ball inflation/deflation levels in the NFL. Hope that the story goes away, and then announce in February or March that the Patriots penalties are withdrawn.

As I've mentioned above, I'm in the mix with idiot NY fans. One little arrogant young dope only comments to me about Brady and the Pats cheating. No other small talk or conversation ever. He's a friend of a friend but I came pretty close to telling him to go fuck himself today. He actually sent me a stupid picture email with Brady with the 4 rings with asinine blurbs/quote boxes attached to each ring. Like he's my pal or something. I'm not accepting Pats Cheating Jokes from my friends, let alone this scum bucket.

Yes - I'm still pissed off

No - there is no Dahabenzapple1.

He won't. Outside of this thread, everybody loves what RG did to the Pats. If he goes back on that suspension people will throw a fit and he'll look weak, placating his "dinner buddy" Kraft.
The suspension is going to hold but if/when it gets to court I would expect a sound defeat for RG.

The Dahabenzapple2 moniker was never meant for this board. As some may know (Jon Abbey especially), it is a musical reference of a recording shown on my avatar. So I'm not sure how I ended up with it here!

And unless they get the President of the company I work for to ban me from sports talk at my job, they will never shut me down.

The emailing of dead blue jays in 2013 to most of my department did get me in a bit of hot water then. The ladies were especially overly sensitive when I followed up with pictures of dead Orioles.

I'm moving, but have been in NYC/northern NJ the past 3-4 years. Regarding this issue, most Giants fans I know think the whole thing is stupid and many think Brady never did a thing. The Jets fans are another story, but that's nothing new. You'd think the Jets have won the last 10 Superbowls listening to these guys.

We live in Staten Island now and I have the same experience. Maybe it's just the demo of football fans I'm around - dads at my kid's pre-school - or maybe they're just being nice to my face, but when it comes to this issue I pretty much always get a sincere "this is bullshit," unprompted and out of the blue from several of them. Regular (and younger) Jet fans would likely be different, but even those guys happen to be decidedly non-douchebag-ish about the whole thing.

The typical ass-fats are going to say what they're going to say about it, but I agree that overall most NFL fans are pretty psyched with what Roger did, based on jealousy and/or misunderstanding of ALL THOSE THINGS THE PATS ALWAYS DO. "Tell me what spy gate was" invariably generates a wrong answer, even from the fans who think this one is B.S. It's kind of amazing, really.

Florio coming in hot.

I was occupied with other matters when the minor skirmish emerged regarding whether Tom Brady was limited to four hours in presenting his case during Tuesday’s appeal hearing. To summarize, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the four-hour limitation applied, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello promptly tweeted a contradiction, Schefter released the memo suggesting the four-hour limit, and then the case entailed 10 hours of testimony.

Despite the contents of the memo, the league’s version ended up being accurate. But that’s not the point of this blurb. The point is that: (1) ESPN reported something the NFL believed to be inaccurate; and (2) the NFL immediately responded.

So let’s go back to January 20. On that day, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that 11 of 12 Patriots footballs used in the AFC title game were measured at a full two pounds under the 12.5 PSI minimum. It was a blatantly false report, but to this day many still believe it to be true.

In response, the NFL uttered not a peep, anywhere. No press release. No tweet from one of the many P.R. employees who work for the NFL. No leak to one of the many journalists who work for the NFL.

The disparity between today’s rapid-fire disagreement with Schefter’s procedural nuance and January’s silence in response to Mortensen’s critical factual assertion is stunning. And it lends credence to the belief that the NFL deliberately leaked false information in order to pin the Patriots against ropes that simply weren’t there.

If Aiello or anyone else from the NFL had responded swiftly to Mortensen’s erroneous report with the true numbers, which were measured by two significantly conflicting pressure gauges, the Patriots would have been able to shout down the readings by explaining the application of the Ideal Gas Law, the mainstream news media never would have paid serious attention to the situation, and Ted Wells never would have been called in to conduct an investigation that by all appearances was aimed at reaching a predetermined result.

The failure to rebut Mortensen’s report therefore bolsters the idea the entire episode was indeed orchestrated to catch the Patriots doing something, even if it’s still not clear what they did.

And Ted Wells investigated none of that. Even though Commissioner Roger Goodell has publicly claimed that Wells did.

Let’s be clear on this: Wells definitely didn’t investigate the leak to Mortensen. Let’s be even more clear: Someone definitely should.

It seems like in light of what we are hearing about how today went, perhaps the best route for Goodell to take if he wants to, is to reduce/vacate the sentence, and simply say that where the integrity of the game is concerned it was better to err on the side of caution, spend all the time and money it took to be thorough and try to find out if cheating happened, and that the missing piece of the puzzle had been that he hadn't personally had a chance to sit down with Brady under oath and hash it out. He can say that in light of today's discussions he believes Tom's statements and that Tom won't be punished, but that the team still will be because something against the rules took place on their staff whether Tom knew about it or not.

It's not either/or with Tom's penalty and the team's. Cheating could have taken place, and all Tom has to do is say that he didn't know about it, and didn't ask anyone to do it. The guys knew his preference and just went too far in trying to please him/were just sloppy with how they filled the balls/whatever. Goodell can say that while the process didn't unfold in an ideal manner, if he is guilty of being over-zealous in trying to protect the league and integrity of the game, so be it, etc., etc..

This really is incredible, and one of the most frustrating aspects of this entire episode.  This entire thing could have been squelched right from the get-go if that Mortensen tweet had been corrected by the NFL.  They could have still looked into it, but the national furor that drove the narrative would almost certainly have been doused, and we'd be talking about something on the scale of a very, very minor infraction, if that.

The NFL is totally to blame on this.  God I want to see a judge rip Goodell to shreds.
