FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Six-time New England Patriots Pro Bowl special-teams player Matthew Slater thought he was going to Bible study on Monday. Instead, he found out in front of teammates and coaches that he was voted by his NFL peers to receive the prestigious Athletes in Action/Bart Starr Award.

The award honors the NFL player who "best exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community."

Slater's father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, received the Bart Starr Award in 1996. The Slaters are the first father-son combination to be recognized with the award.

That's terrific. He always impresses me in those "Patriot's Post-Game" videos where he is the one who gives the players-only speech. And he has always impressed me for turning a lackluster college career into a 6 (and counting) Pro Bowl career.

A quick study showed me Steve Tasker with 7 Pro Bowls as a Special Teamer. Any others I could think of were well less than that. So I wonder if Tasker holds the record for appearances as a ST.

The Patriots have a "character coach" (character coach/team development staffer Jack Easterby). I'm guessing that's not uncommon but I never thought about something like that.

Here is the video of Slater being surprised with the award. Pretty cool.

Showed the most class giving a shout out to Bart Starr and Asking his wife (who has to dread that her husband is too sick to make these calls) About him.

Slater is maybe the classiest Patriot we have ever seen. And thats an impressive list with Troy Brown, Tedy, Vince and Tom (and others).

Eagles deny Jets permission to speak to QB coach about vacant NY OC position. Seems bad form, but fuck the Jets.
It sure is bad form. The common practice is not to hold back a coach for interviewing for a promotion.
I have a feeling that John DeFilippo didn't want to go to the Jets and the Eagles are just covering for him... Rather than say "John DeFilippo has no interest in interviewing with the Jets"

It may be but I can understand why Philly blocked him.
OC Reich is reportedly a candidate for the Buffalo gig.
I assume Defilippo would get promoted to OC if that happens.
Losing both after his rookie season could be a blow to Wentz development.
Plus he was there only one season. There may have been some commitment when hired that he would stay for a couple years at least to help with the development.

Plus they may be doing him a favor since that whole Jets staff could be out within 12 months.

I thought teams couldn't block coaches from interviewing for promotions. Or maybe that just applies to coordinators/assistants applying for head jobs.
