The time it's taken Browner to get from Foxboro to DC is almost as slow as McNabb's final Super Bowl drive on NFL Network they just showed

“@AlbertBreer: Redskins sources told @RapSheet and I that Brandon Browner hadn't been at Redskins Park as of close of business. Skins won't confirm.”

I'm interested in this as well.  Revis/Ryan on the outside with Dennard/Arrington in the slot and McCourty/Browner in the safety spots looks drool worthy on paper.

Eh, he could be a safety but I see no reason not to just put him as the other starting CB and move Denard to nickle / slot duty with Arrington as the all-purpose backup.

Yup, as the Seahawks have shown, if you have both an elite FS and an elite man cover corner on one side of the field (allowing the FS to shade the other way), then you can play single-high safety almost all the time without that much worry about getting beaten over the top.  And if you're doing that, then you don't want your other safety to be a Duron Harmon type whose primary skills are as a centerfielder.  You want him to be a bigger guy that can match up with TEs, be an enforcer in zone responsibilities in the short area of the field, and help a lot in the running game.  I have no idea whether Brandon Browner has the instincts and play recognition to play that Kam Chancellor role but that would be the model in theory.  Signing Revis and then going with a starting safety combination of McCourty and Harmon doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Of course, they could also look elsewhere for a larger safety.

Wouldn't Ryan be in the slot then?

The reasons I can see him shifting to safety are that he's 6' 4" 220 lb and 29 years old.

Seems a tad high, but let's wait to see the details. Either way, I wouldn't call it a massive overpay or anything like that in this market. Without the suspension issue, he'd have gotten higher, and I would certainly guess this contract protects from that in some way. So, really, provided the Pats protected themselves against a huge suspension, it's a good deal.

Wow! Excited for him, particularly if his is a hybrid SS/3rd CB/cover Julius Thomas role. As for the contract, here's hoping there's at least like $6M of that non-guaranteed in year 3.

Agreed. This secondary is going to be awesome. What a difference over the past years.

I'm sure there are serious playtime and roster bonuses to protect the Pats. If he does get the $17M then he will have been healthy, clean and productive.

Does the 1/4 of his salary this year that they don't pay him while he's on suspension count against the cap?

Today, I am proud to announce that I am a New England Patriot. I am honored
that the Patriots are making me part of their legendary organization, and am
grateful for the opportunity Mr. Kraft, Coach Belichick, Nick Caserio and
the entire team have given me. I intend to diligently work with the same
passion and dedication that I have displayed since coming into the NFL to
uphold the great traditions and qualities that are embodied by the Patriots.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the Seattle Seahawks for giving a CFL
player the once in-a-lifetime opportunity to return to the NFL, making a
young boy's dream come true. To Coach Pete Carroll, GM John Schneider, John
Idzik, Coach Richard, Rocky Seto, the LOB, my teammates, the training staff, the equipment guys the Seahawks organization as a whole and most importantly the 12th Man, I say thank you for everything you have done for myself and my family.
I am a truly blessed person.

The contract is going to be quite complicated, I would think, given the issues with the first 8 games for Browner this season. I believe he has to miss playing in 4 and can't get paid in the next 4. I don't even know how that works or how the NFL could enforce it, since he's a free agent. The pats could have just paid him 12 weeks worth of salary over the final 8, right? There's no existing deal to harm Browner.

Was/Is Seattle up against the cap?  They didn't seem to put much effort into re-signing him.

Seattle didnt have space for him at the price tag he was going to command.  They knew they couldnt afford him so they moved on in an appropriate manner

They have about $17M in cap space, but they also have 2 better CBs than him (and Lane is probably as good) and they'd sign Thurmond over him too I think.

And a bunch of core players they're probably thinking of locking up long term at big price tags.

The fact that Seattle has 2-3 CBs better than Browner shows you how stacked they are. Browner would be the best CB on some teams himself.

Wow.  We are loaded with terrific cover guys suddenly.  Revis, Browner, Dennard, Ryan, and McCourty.  We should match up as well as any team in football when other teams spread it out.  And when they don't, it's still incredible quality depth.  And I didn't even mention Arrington yet.
