Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan to the DL. Sandy Leon and Rusney Castillo recalled

Except that he would have lost his service time, regardless, when Hanigan got hurt. (Unless you think the Sox would have promoted Sandy Leon over Swihart, which is absurd.)
Exactly. That stupidity needs to end. He definitely would have filled in for Hanigan which would have burned his service time as it wasn't even going to be 15 full days to get to the necessary number.

One guess would be partially torn Achilles and that they're waiting to see if it heals without surgery.
Or it could just be a high ankle sprain like they said it is. It's more common in hockey and football, and players often joke they'd rather break something, because the healing time is often quicker for a clean break. Depending on severity it can be anywhere from 4-8 weeks, and re-injury is pretty common. Putting a player in a boot to immobilize it for a week or two is part of normal treatment.

Has Castillo played at all yet? I know Young has been playing well, but I'd like to actually see him get some reps while he's up. This may be his last chance to prove himself.

He put up a .624 OPS in AAA this year and so hasn't earned any playing time. He can't hit major league pitching. He has pretty much sucked against AAA pitching even though he is a year or two older than the average age at that level. His best spot/position might be running back for the New England Patriots. He has pretty good speed and enough strength to break some tackles.

Yeah, pretty sure he's already had his last chance to prove himself at the ML level. If he ever starts hitting in AAA maybe he gets another look, but until then it's as an emergency call up for pinch running and maybe defense if we manage to lose every other possible Sox outfielder.

Chris Young, stay healthy!

Before I even knew he was hurt, my first reaction when seeing him step into the wall was cringing while I recalled tearing my Achilles. One could certainly BS a torn Achilles into a "high ankle sprain"...no sense giving away information to potential trading partners, should DD be trying to pick up OF/C depth right now.

He would need to pass a medical test in order to be traded. I don't think there's any gamesmanship being played here.

I think threecy meant concealing a season-ending injury while trying to pick up a replacement, not dealing Swihart.

Yes, that was what I was referring to, if DD is trying to acquire OF/C depth (not talking about trading Swihart).

A similar scenario to this theory would be Brendan Donnelly, whose serious injury they hid until they had acquired the replacement depth they wanted.

Hanigan made modest but defined offensive contributions last year focused on his ability to take a walk. Defensively he's absolutely serviceable EXCEPT for his handling of the knuckler. My observation says that his injury is related to catching Wright and also contributed to his zero offense.I think he is a useful player catching one or more other pitchers. Vaz will increase his value by catching the knuckler. Recently he has been somewhat of a disappointment in all areas. Starting (hopefully) with tonight's Wright appearance he will revive his value. Leon is destined to buy tickets on the Pawtucket shuttle after Hanigan returns.

Huh, Vazquez has 4 passed balls himself, 5th worst in the league despite apparently not having any with Wright and playing fewer games than most of the other 'leaders.' I wonder if the Fenway scorer is a little less charitable than others.

I fee bad for Hanigan. Watching him catch Wright is kind of heartbreaking - you can see the panic and fear in his eyes trying to catch that thing. It's probably taken years off his life.

“@PeteAbe: Blake Swihart going to get a second opinion on his ankle from a specialist. Odds of him returning tending way down.”

Is Hanigan on the DL? Is Rusney recalled to play for the Red Sox? No and no.

So why in the world would you bump this thread that has been dead since early June?

We have no other thread regarding Swihart's injury. And it does not deserve its own thread until he goes to the specialist and we get an update on if he will return this season. But it is news that fits in a thread regarding Swihart going on the DL

Why wouldn't you start a Swihart thread if you think that you have Swihart news that is interesting and there is no thread for him? That would be a million percent better than bumping a dead thread with a really misleading title.
