*When* he's healthy, he's a fn great player. I too hope he can stay healthy.
He really is. Problem is the lack of health. I am curious to see this squad next year. In a tough West they're obviously not a top contender, but I think they had 3 possible paths:
1: re-sign Paul and Griffin, hope for better health this year and that LeBron would want to come to L.A. the following year -- that's really looking for an inside straight.
2: lose all of them -- worst option as even with a ton of cap space you'd still be looking at a long rebuild.
3: re-sign one of Paul and Griffin. Much as I love CP3, and I think he's the greatest, there's a good argument that if they only have one of the two they're better off with Griffin. Some combo of Doc and CP3 kept the Clippers playing an overly traditional game. Again with the significant caveat that Griffin stays healthy, I love him in combination with Beverley in a point forward role and think it opens up some much more innovative player combos. If the Clippers evolve into an interesting team -- say the #6 or #7 seed in the West -- w/out CP3 that may well make them an intriguing destination for a big free agent next year.
In short, out of those 3 paths, there's an argument that this may be the best way for the cards to have fallen.
The wild card is Jerry West and Doc. Doc has been a failure in terms of attracting/keeping stars and in re staying on the cutting edge on how to run an offense. Does West begin to push him out? And does West have a plan in mind for how to complement Griffin. The Clippers getting some useful value back on CP3 smacks of West's intelligence and be very interesting to see what moves he sees on his chessboard. I have to think he knew CP3 was likely gone before he took the Clippers position, and I guess he has a plan.
