Lived in the Indianapolis area for 17 years, and all three kids went through HS while we were there. Most of these gyms are out in the boonies, and I guess only Southport and E. Chicago could be considered close to a city.

Gary Harris (Magic) was in my daughter’s class, and Gordon Hayward, Josh McRoberts, Eric Gordon, Jeff and Marcus Teague, Mike Conley, Greg Oden, and other notable NBA players all came through the gym in high school. George Hill preceded them by a few years. And there’s also the Zeller brothers (Cody, Tyler, and Luke) and ZBo who were big names at the time 2007-2013ish. Pretty wild all the top end talent that comes from a state not known for much else other than the Jacksons and goober VPs.

My wife went to Lawerence North. We were in town for a wedding and visited her high school which was being renovated at the time. The facilities looked more like a junior college than a high school, at least in my experience going to school outside of Boston. The gym was huge but they also had two indoor pools.

LN/Conley/Oden were kings back then. Hard to describe the attachment to high school basketball that the state has. I imagine the only thing comparable (in the US) would be Minnesota and high school hockey.

And then there’s the state tournament, made legendary by Hoosiers. It has lost a bit of its luster as they’ve gone to Class competition, but it’s still incredible.

There was a book that came out the last year of the all-inclusive tournament called "Where The Game Matters Most". A great read if still available.

Unlike most areas these days, it appears that the prep school appeal there is not as great.

Parochial schools in Indianapolis (Cathedral, Roncalli, Brebeuf, Heritage Christian, Chatard, et al) and Evansville (Reitz, Mater Dei et Al) are very popular, but you’re right the prep school/PG model isn’t as notable, outside of maybe Culver Military.

My mom is from the sticks of southeast Indiana, ten miles from Milan (the real Hickory). She was 12 years old when that happened, so I asked her once if her school (Guilford) played Milan, but she said, "No, we only played the smaller schools. They were town kids". She was the last graduating class of Guilford as they were consolidated into another district the next year and eventually turned the high school into a fire department. Milan has a restaurant with some of the basketball team's history in it, but it's kind of a racist place called The Reservation with a teepee in the parking lot and a cigar store Indian at the entrance.
