it's a hell of a secondary now. let's not set money on fire by signing asomougha when we still need a RT.
You need depth at that position. With the depressed market, you can get a good player at a bargain price(Huff is another option with his versatility and also Grimes). Cannon is in-house if Vollmer gets a bigger deal, but I think Vollmer comes back at their price.nothumb said:it's a hell of a secondary now. let's not set money on fire by signing asomougha when we still need a RT.

That's a great idea until you're trying to convince someone who wants to start to sign and be behind 4 guys on the depth chart. 5 guys, if you assume different skillsets for slot corner vs. outside guy.RIrooter09 said:Exactly how I feel. One injury and Arrington is back playing on the outside. No thank you.
Super Nomario said:I watched the first half of the week 1 Cardinals game with an eye on Wilson. The Cardinals used him in a ton of different ways: as a centerfielder, in a cover-2 shell, blitzing, down with the linebackers in run support. He spent most of his time in the box. I didn't see him playing man coverage but that might have been the matchup. He still seems to diagnose quickly, run fast, and he likes to hit - a couple times I saw him pull Rodney's patented "hit just after the whistle but not so long after that it gets a whistle."
I think he can play the role Gregory did last year; he played in the box more than anything else, but they still used him in deep coverage shells. He seems to still be versatile. I'm not sure they'll want him out there for 75+ plays, but I don't think he's just going to be a nickel LB like some are suggesting.
Another possibility: the Pats could start Gregory and Wilson and move McCourty back to CB.
Isn't McCourty the 3rd outside corner? They have good depth at safety so that allows Mccourty to also be depth at CB.RIrooter09 said:

Yes, which is why I'd like to see either Brent Grimes or Michael Huff to come in.( . ) ( . ) and (_!_) said:Isn't McCourty the 3rd outside corner? They have good depth at safety so that allows Mccourty to also be depth at CB.
If they bring in another CB I'd like it to be in the draft now. Sign vollmer and draft some kid who you can maybe use as a hedge against Talib nextRedOctober3829 said:Yes, which is why I'd like to see either Brent Grimes or Michael Huff to come in.

I think Talib signed while I was writing that post so now it seems extra-stupid. But would you be surprised if McCourty suits up as a CB at some point this year? I wouldn't.Kenny F'ing Powers said:I should wash your mouth out with soap.

I agree they should get someone better than Marquise Cole in there, and I assume they will. But it won't be a great option and I have to imagine will happen later for short money.

I think you're right on here. I understand folks want another outside guy, but when you look at the secondary now, they have no backup for Arrington in the slot. Both Cole and Derrick Martin are free agents. McCourty, Arrington, and Dowling-if-his-hip-stays-attached can all back up the outside, even if none of those are ideal options, but I don't even see any theoretical options for backup nickelback.
Yeah this. I like Vollmer a lot and want him to be the priority from here on out. Draft the remaining CB depth with the first or second rounder and maybe you have a Talib hedge. I think this is exactly right. Draft the guy you're not depending on being a starter. I don't like the idea of handing the job to Cannon without a viable LT backup one bit.( . ) ( . ) and (_!_) said:If they bring in another CB I'd like it to be in the draft now. Wilson said he's talked to @Arrington24_7 about surrendering his number - offered a year's supply of pampers to the new dad to get #24
I like the creativity....

Me too, just think its super unlikely.soxfan121 said:
Two more affordable years on his current deal with the Pats and the fact they didn't release him with an injury settlement indicates they at least want to see him after rehab to gauge whether he's got anything left in the tank. Good guy to have around the facility regardless, and I'm rooting for him to overcome the high odds against him.

Mike, what's going on with Adrian Wilson? Is he with the team? Will he be in the Pats uniform next season?
Mike (12:50 PM)
Technically he's under contract, but I'd be surprised if he's back. Probably wasn't going to make the team coming out of training camp/preseason.
