UAB baseball junior utility player Adam Lau was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 37th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Wednesday.
"I am very grateful for the opportunity to play professional baseball," Lau said. "I'm thankful for my family, friends, coaches and teammates for all of their support. Glory be to God for all the blessing he has given me and I'm excited to be apart of the Red Sox organization."
Lau was the 1101st pick overall, and the third Blazer to be taken in this year's draft. He was a 2015 All-Conference USA Second Team honoree, after turning in an impressive junior campaign on the hill and at the plate.
The Madison, Ala. native was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year watch list earlier this season, and appeared in 22 games in relief with a team-best 1.71 ERA in 31.2 IP. He fanned 42 batters with a .181 opposing batting average, and earned a club-best seven saves out of the pen.
At the plate, Lau started the majority of UAB's 58 games at designated hitter, hitting .254 with four home runs and 21 RBI. He led the squad in stolen bases with 12 and tallied 36 hits in 40 starts in the field.
