Madison Younginer, brought up from Salem even before they were eliminated, was the lone bright spot for the Portland staff with 3 scoreless relief innings. Granted they were all low-leverage, but he yielded just a lone hit without walking a batter. A great sign as he prepares to head to the Arizona Fall League.

His season numbers over 35 games were badly skewed by four horrible outings:

* April 14 vs Myrtle Beach (2.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 0 K)
April 27 vs Winston Salem (0.2 IP, 6 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 0 K)
* May 10 vs Carolina (0.2 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 0 K)
* July 9 vs Frederick (1.0 IP, 7 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 1 K)

Those are the only times he allowed more than an earned run. In 24 of his stints, he held the opposition scoreless.

Is this cherry-picking? Nope. Nobody's saying those four outings didn't happen. They most certainly did, and he most certainly got shelled.

But they're outliers, four data points on a plot that bear no resemblance to the other 31 points. They represent just 5 of his 57.1 innings (8.7%) yet they account for a whopping 19 of his 26 ER (73%), 19 of his 61 hits (31%), 11 of his 25 walks (44%), and 9 of his 14 doubles (64%) -- but only 1 of his 55 strikeouts (1.82%).

His metrics in those 4 disastrous games: A .613/.698/.903/1.601 line, 6.00 WHIP, 0.09 K/BB, and 34.20 ERA.

In his other 31 games: A .220/.275 /.267/.542 line, 1.07 WHIP, 3.86 K/BB, and 1.20 ERA.

89% of the time, THAT was the pitcher who took the hill for Salem this year.
