I assume Bastardo for Portland, but I did that yesterday, too.

I'm going to go ahead & call cap on the Walter thing MiLB has, too, since he's on the Red Sox. Maybe BVB?

Also, I should explain LIDOM.

LIDOM is the Dominican professional winter league baseball - Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana.

There are 6 teams & they play 50 games each from mid-October to late December. Then the top 4 play a round-robin 18 game schedule, with the top 2 teams playing a best of 9 with the winner going to the Caribbean Series.

The following Red Sox were drafted in yesterday's 16 round draft:

3-2: Allan Castro - Toros Del Este
3-3: Miguel Bleis - Estrellas Orientales
5-6: Yordanny Monegro - Tigres Del Licey
13-6: Felix Cepeda - Tigres Del Licey
16-5: Albertson Asigen - Águilas Cibaeñas

Also worth noting that this is a draft for future rights.

Additionally--note that Portland has rescheduled one of their most amazing promotions of the year: Field of Dreams will be Friday at 6pm, not Saturday as originally planned.

Guess he counts Meidroth as a middle IF, which is understandable, as he explained. But Meidroth has played a lot of 3B and if he makes the majors he could definitely cover that position. I'd guess he would probably be in the top 3 for our third base prospects but a lot lower in our middle IF prospects.
I'll put him on both next time I sit down, but yeah. He's easily #2 on the CI list for me behind Blaze, & SP has him ahead of Blaze.

Meidroth isn't really a CI, though because I couldn't see him playing 1st. If I were to do a 3B only ranking I'd have him ahead of Blaze, even though I think Blaze is the better prospect.

Going to go through the Dominican Winter League teams in order of record last year & talk a bit about them & the Red Sox players who played for them last year.

In about 20 minutes.

Tigres Del Licey was founded in 1907 & is one of 2 teams that play their home games in Santo Domingo. They share a stadium, Estadio Quisqueya, with the other Santo Domingo team.

I thought this was a pretty cool story:

Over the next 16 years, Licey became so dominant that an agreement was made among the three other competing teams (Los Muchachos, San Carlos and Delco Lite) to form a new team, composed of their best players, in order to beat Licey. This team, called "Leones del Escogido" ( Lions of the Chosen one ), still exists, and the teams share the same stadium in Santo Domingo.
Anyway, last year Licey had the best record in the league at 34-16, despite having the 2nd youngest team in the league, with an average age of 26.8.

The team included Major Leaguers such as Elly De La Cruz, Oneil Cruz & Albert Abreu, & former MLB players such as the 37 y/o Emilio Bonifácio, who has been playing for Licey since 2006, & Hansel Robles who has been pitching quite well in the Mexican Independent League.

Three current members of the Red Sox were on this team:

* Pablo Reyes, who had a .746 OPS in 34 PAs.
* Narciso Crook, who had a .476 OPS in 9 PAs.

&...
* TRISTON CASAS, who had a .689 OPS in 15 PAs. He was 2-9 with 2 singles, 5 walks, a HBP & 3 strikeouts.

Casas left after only 3 games played due to knee soreness, though. Carlos Febles was actually Licey's bench coach.

Águilas Cibaeñas was founded in 1933 & plays their home games in Santiago at Estadio Cibao.

Estadio Cibao is nicknamed the “Valley of Death” and many fans consider it the most intimidating stadium for the other team in the country or even all the Caribbean. Estadio Cibao is known as the loudest and happiest stadium in the Caribbean. Historically the Águilas Cibaeñas have performed much better at home than on the road.
Last season they finished at 32-18, 2 games behind Licey. They had the 2nd oldest team in the league with an average age of 28.6.

The team included former Major Leaguers such as Melky Cabrera (37), Yoenis Cespedes (36), Neftali Feliz (34, now playing in the Mexican Independent League), & Carlos Martinez (30, now playing in the Mexican Independent League).

Frank German pitched 13 games, 14.1 innings for the Eagles, & had a 1.88 ERA & 1.12 WHIP.

Gigantes del Cibao was founded in 1996 to expand the league from 5 teams to 6. They play their games in San Francisco de Macoris in Estadio Julian Javier. They finished 25-25 last year & had the oldest team in the league with an average age of 29.8.

The team included current MLB player Jose Siri, & former Red Sox player Jeurys Familia.

The most interesting, to me, though, is Fernando Rodney, who is currently 46 & pitching in the Mexican Independent League. Last year for the Giants, he had a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings & recorded 8 saves.

I reserve the right to not do these threads next year if the new guy decimates the system.

Both the Greenville game & the Portland game should be watchable for free on the MiLB app today.

Which definitely means YORDANNY, but probably also means Wikelman, Roman, Teel, etc.

Imagine firing the guy who acquired Mayer/Roman/Teel/Yorke/Hickey/Blaze/Meidroth in the last few years.

Not even mentioning all the other guys who are not currently hitters for Portland.

I hope the Drive win tonight or things could get a bit messy. It’s Euphoria weekend here - a big food and wine festival - and there’s an event scheduled to use the park Friday night. No idea what will happen if there’s a Game 3.

  • Party in the Park – Friday, Sept. 15th, 7 – 10 pm at Fluor Field. Get ready to party inside the (baseball) park with local music from Steel Toe Stiletto and enjoy craft beverages and bites from regional chefs.

Hmm, yup. I guess that's why YORDANNY is going today.
