Time to start thinking of Playoffs!

[Red - Currently in Playoffs and/or Leading Division. Green - There is still time for a playoff run. Blue - Think about next year. ]

Pawsox (64-54) - 2 GB of Syracuse for IL North Division Title. 1/2 GA of Rochester for the Wild Card Spot. [Top 3 records in the International League are all in the IL North. In fact, other than the Division Leaders in the South and West, the Rest of those Divisions are all UNDER .500]

Portland (74-44) - 4 GA of Binghamton for EL Eastern Division Title. 16 GA of Trenton for Wild Card position. With 24 games remaining, Seadogs could clinch a playoff spot next week.

Salem (19-25 - 2nd Half) - Myrtle Beach won the first half CL South Division title and is again leading the division. Therefore, Salem is fighting Winston Salem (4 GB) and Carolina (2.5 GB) for entry into the playoffs. If they could win some games at home (9-15 this half)....

Greenville (14-32 - 2nd Half) - Losing 17 consecutive games puts a damper on any playoff hopes. Could be eliminated as early as Saturday.

Lowell (23-28) - 12 1/2 GB of Tri-City who is running away with the Stedler Division. Only 3 1/2 GB in the Wild Card race (with 6 teams ahead of them). Like Salem... winning at home (9-19 thus far) would help a lot.

GCL (25-16) - 1 GA of Rays for GCL South Title.

DSL (40-16) - 3 GA of Giants for Boca Chica South Division. Haven't a clue how the actual playoffs work... but Sox currently have second best record in the League.

One of the most iconic moments in Red Sox history will be remembered Thursday, August 7 when the Spinners give away Dave Roberts "The Steal" Bobble Heads, commemorating his famous stolen base in the 2004 ALCS. Tickets remain available and the first 1,000 fans will receive a bobble head!

Gabe Speier had another nice game today for the GCL team. Coming back from Tommy John last September, the 19 y/o lefty has thrown 16 innings, allowing 10 hits, 2 earned runs, with 11 strike-outs and only one walk.

The real reason I'm posting about him however, outside the fact that he's a new binkie, is that everyone has him listed as a right-handed pitcher. MiLB.com, BaseballReference, BaseballAmerica, and the BaseballCube all have him as a righty, but in fact he is a lefty.

Funny you should mention that. The team had been playing for nearly a quarter-century at Knights Stadium 15 miles south of the city in Fort Mill SC, routinely finishing last in attendance. Ownership had been seeking to build a new stadium right in Charlotte for years, but their plans had been thwarted by an opponent (attorney Jerry Reese) who had claimed the land swap being proposed for their site was illegal.

In truth, Reese was trying to block the move so he could relocate an MLB team there, with the Marlins his primary target. His proposed stadium site was just down the road from where BB&T Ballpark was ultimately built after breaking ground 2 years ago. Reese's plans gave up the ghost once Jeffrey Loria was able to swindle Miami taxpayers into footing the bill for Marlins Park.

The good news for Justin Haley:  No ER and just 3 hits through 6 innings so far, one to ex-Red Sox Nieuman Romero (.324 BA), and two to the red-hot Glynn Davis (now at .404 in 15 G since his promotion from high-A).

The bad news: 5 walks and an HBP.

I assume his night's done after 100 pitches (58 for strikes). Sea Dogs leading 2-0.

Stank also tossed 6 shutout innings with 3 H, but without Haley's wildness. Just 1 BB against 3 Ks as his ERA drops to 4.01.

He's done for the night as German Taveras just came on for the 7th. It's scoreless, as Lexington's Alex Mills was also dealing tonight (6 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 K).

Steven Wright had a pretty decent outing going, but he just gave up a 3-run bomb to Josh Phegley (his 19th of the year) in the b-6th to make it 4-1 Charlotte. Two of those runs are unearned after the Knights first two batters reached on PawSox errors by Deven Marrero  & Justin Henry.

Jake Dahlstrand trails 2-1, but he's been solid after a shaky start. Both runs he gave up in the 1st were unearned thanks to Carlos Asuaje's miscue. However, the two free passes he allowed after that error didn't help, as the first loaded the bases and the second forced a run in.

He just finished the 7th and will likely exit after 4 H, 2 BB and 4 Ks.

Haley won't get a win tonight, as Pete Ruiz just puked up the lead in the b-7th without retiring a batter. Single, double, single, wild pitch, double, walk. Good job, good effort.

Jeremy Kehrt comes on and Bowie's parade continues with an RBI single and a wild pitch. 4-2 BaySox, still no outs.

Salem busts out the meat sticks in the b-7th with a Matty Johnson RBI single and Asuaje's error-atoning three-run blast. All runs scored with 2 outs.

It's a 5-2 lead and Dahlstrand's in line for the victory as Kyle Kraus works in the t-8th.

The PawSox fight back with 3 in the t-7th to tie it up 4-4. Mookie plates 2 with a single, and Lavarnway also singles one home. They almost took the lead after a pitch got away, but they were able to nab Mookie trying to score from 3rd.

Alex Wilson relieves Wright for the b-7th.

It ends up a 6-run inning, with 5 of them charged to Ruiz. His ERA jumps from 1.77 to 3.98.
