I'm going to guess tomorrow is going to be Angel Bastardo's AA debut, but if not it's probably Isaac Coffey.

Grant Gambrell (#42), who turns 26 in November, was the 3rd round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2019.

He was acquired along with Josh Winckowski, Luis De La Rosa (#104 but probably rising), Franchy Cordero & Freddy Valdez (Valdez was dropped after putting up a 66 wRC+ in the FCL last season) in return for Andrew Benintendi.

Gambrell missed '22 after 5 surgeries to remove a benign tumor in his heel bone.

As such, he started this season where he left off with the Royals & Red Sox in '21...high-A. Gambrell made 6 starts for Greenville, covering 31.1 innings, & had a 4.88 ERA with a 4.21 xFIP & 1.40 WHIP, 25.5% k/6.4% bb.

Since then, he has made 15 starts for Portland totalling 84.1 innings with a 3.42 ERA & 3.91 xFIP & 1.22 WHIP, 23.8% k/9.1% bb.

From the SoxProspects scouting report:

Mechanics: Throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Starts on the first base side of the rubber. High leg kick, really drives of his back side. Gets good extension. Arm action is long behind with a stab. Some effort in delivery. Needs to show he can repeat it deep into games. Throws strikes, solid command.

Fastball: 91-94 mph. Velocity had increased in Spring Training 2021 and was sitting 94-96 mph. Has some sink. Needs to show he can hold velocity deeper into games and into the season. Does not generate many swinging strikes, but does generate an above-average amount of groundballs.

Curveball 79-81, 11-to-5 movement. Hammer breaking ball with nice shape. Potential plus pitch.

Changeup: 83-86 mph. Third pitch, but has shown potential. Nice separation, has some sink to it. Potential average offering.
Summation: Potential up-and-down swingman. Wider range of outcomes for a college player due to his pitch changes after the pandemic. Got into better shape and velocity has increased in 2021. Reasonably high floor as a reliever due to fastball/breaking ball combination if injury issues crop back up or command does not take a step forward.

Burned . . . Blacklisted
Scouting the stat line, I kind of like Gambrell, and he’s a very useful type to have in an organization, with the ability to possibly surprise due to the oddity of his development. He may be a minor league depth starter, but a guy who maybe can come up and give you an half-decent emergency start is always useful.

He lost 2020 to the pandemic and from what it appears, the ankle issue was misinterpreted or misdiagnosed in 2021, which led to him pitching through the issue until it was properly diagnosed with the Red Sox.

https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2023/06/red-sox-prospect-from-andrew-benintendi-trade-back-after-5-tumor-surgeries.html?outputType=amp

Ian Cundall at Sox Prospects described Gambrell’s repertoire on their recent podcast as “a bucket of 50’s”, meaning a bunch of average pitches, but nothing that stands out as an “out” pitch.
Maybe he’s another multi-inning bullpen guy and his stuff plays up a little more, as he showed a more velocity early in the year.

Thx for the additional context. Yeah, he definitely seems like a useful organization guy... but is that worth a 40-man spot, & if not, does someone take him?

I've compared him to Thad Ward before, but after digging into it some more, it seems like an even more apt comparison.

Ward is another guy with ok stuff who missed '20 with the pandemic. He only pitched 9 innings in '21 before being shutdown & eventually undergoing TJ surgery.

Then in '22 as a 25 y/o in AA, after 3 short rehab assignments, he put up a 2.43 ERA, 3.74 xFIP & 1.26 WHIP, 29.5% k/10.1% bb.

To add to the similarities, SoxProspects also says Ward's fastball sat in the 91-94 range. In addition to the 3 pitches Gambrell throws, he also throws a slider & cutter.

https://soxprospects.com/players/ward-thaddeus.htm

So do they treat him the way they did Ward & just let him go? Do they see more of a future with him? The roster crunch is definitely more significant this year than it was last year.

To add some more context to this...

View: https://twitter.com/brendan_camp/status/1694529897408893035

... this covers 8 games & 13 innings during which he's allowed 7 hits & 8 walks (1.15 WHIP), while striking out 21.

Perez turns 22 in 9 days & signed for $10k in November '18. He's a 6'3 righty originally from Santiago, DR.

He has been at Salem all season & overall has a 3.60 ERA, 1.48 WHIP & 59 strikeouts in 50 innings.

He improved from #149 to #130 in my last update & will probably move up a bit more in the next one.

Christian Arroyo has 51 AAA PAs.

He is 7-48 with 3 walks & 8 strikeouts & has a .384 OPS. No wonder they intentionally walked Ryan Fitzgerald to face him yesterday.

International League East Playoff Standings for 2nd Half:

Lehigh Valley (Phillies) 29-18 (---)
Worcester (Red Sox) 28-18 (-0.5)
Durham (Rays) 28-19 (-1)
Buffalo (Jays) 25-20 (-3)
Jacksonville (Marlins) 26-21 (-3)
Norfolk (Orioles) 26-21 (-3)

Norfolk won the 1st half (by 8.5 games) so if they happen to finish 1st in the 2nd half, the 2nd place team would make the Playoffs.

Eastern League Playoff Standings for 2nd Half:

Somerset (Yankees) 26-21 (---)

Portland (Red Sox) 23-24 (-3)
Hartford (Colorado) 22-24 (-3.5)
Reading (Phillies) 22-25 (-4)

Somerset won the 1st half (by 2.5 games over Portland) so the Sea Dogs are 1.5 out of a playoff spot & are chasing Binghamton.

South Atlantic League South Playoff Standings for 2nd Half:

Who cares? Greenville finished 36-30 in the 1st half, beating Winston Salem (34-29) by a half game & clinching a playoff spot.

Let's ignore the fact that Greenville is tied for the worst record in the 2nd half at 20-30, 13.5 games behind division leading Hickory (Rangers).

Carolina League North Playoff Standings for 2nd Half:

Let's also not worry about this. Salem is 9 games back of Carolina & are currently in last place at 21-29.

In the 1st half they finished in a 3-way tie for 3rd in the 6 team league with a 30-33 record (or a 2-way tie for 4th if you think the 31-34 team did better because they had a higher winning %).

Down East (Rangers) won the 1st half & Carolina (Brewers) is winning the 2nd half.

Florida Complex League South Final Playoff Standings:

The FCL Sox finished 3rd at 28-25, 3 games behind the FCL Pirates.

Dominican Summer League San Pedro Final Playoff Standings:

DSL Red Sox Blue finished 3rd out of 8 teams with a 28-26 record, 13.5 games behind the juggernaut that was Pirates Gold, who finished the season 41-12 & on a 15-game win streak.

DSL Red Sox Red finished 4th with a 26-26 record, 14.5 games back.

The Pirates were apparently going for that 1st place as their Pirates Black entry finished with a less stellar 17-34 record, 23.5 games behind their Golden counterpart.

Thx! Been in meetings all morning.
They did get a hit in the 5th(a Hamilton single, he was later ejected after being caught stealing so I gather he thought he was safe). Scored two unearned in the 7th on a couple Valdez/Dalbec walks, a double steal and an error. Currently winning 4-2 on 1 hit and 5 walks.

BVB went 6 innings, 7 Ks, 0 BB, 5 H, 2ER

Fernandez on for the 7th:
BB
K
SB
Lineout
Single (run scored)
Lineout

WooSox up 4-3 after 7

AJ Politi pitched a 1-2-3 9th with a strikeout for his 14th save. The strikeout was a called strike 3 to the final hitter on the corner on the 11th pitch of the at bat.

Valdez was 1-3 with a steal (3).

Dalbec was 0-1 with 3 walks & a steal (16).

Blizzard was 1-2 with an ejection. Roberto Hernandez came in for him (DH) & was 1-2 with a double.

Gambrell is a somewhat different pitcher than he was two years ago. He eliminated his four-seam fastball and now uses only his two-seam fastball. He added a cutter during spring training. He also throws a slider and changeup.

Wow, did I ever read that headline wrong. For a second I was stunned that they had somehow added a pitcher named Andrew Benintendi to the org without me knowing.
That would have been quite an accomplishment. They did add a ZACH PENROD recently. I enjoyed that.

It's 2-2 in the top of the 5th.

Alex Binelas hit his 15th homer.
