A walk-off, as Kemp doubled and Devers (who else?) singled him in. Kemp also racked an OF assist on an 8-6-2 relay to nail a runner trying to score from first on a double in the 1st inning.

I assume with Ross's foot injury tonight we'll see Dan Butler called up to Boston tomorrow, with Blake Swihart heading to Pawtucket.

Leonel Escobar (who I believe leads the Sox system catchers in phantom DL stints over the last few seasons) will probably be activated by Salem, allowing Carson Blair to replace Swihart in Portland.

Jayson Hernandez (on the PawSox 7-day DL since July 11) is eligible to be activated, but I have no idea whether it's a real health issue or a phantom. Danny Bethea went on the 7-day DL for Portland today, so he's not an option to relieve the depth crunch.

I don't imagine Butler being pulled early is a coincidence.

Agreed. Butler getting hurt late in tonight's game would have been a short-term crisis for Cherington, probably forcing him to make an expensive waiver trade for someone else's backup or AAA catcher (assuming the new guy could hop an early AM flight for tomorrow afternoon's game).

Matt Spring getting hurt after replacing Butler in tonight's game would have been a short-term crisis for whoever the emergency catcher is for the PawSox.

Have to say, all of tonight's events also probably protect Lavarnway from getting DFA'd until the end of the season.

Margot and Rijo continue to impress as teenagers at Greenville

I don't think he'll ever catch another game in Boston's system. That ship has sailed.

Also, just had a twitter exchange with Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects, and Jayson Hernandez's DL status is "almost certainly" a phantom injury. That being the case, Chris believes he'll be activated by the PawSox while Swihart stays put with the Sea Dogs.

If Sox felt Swihart ready for Triple-A, gotta think they'd have promoted him by now. I'd be surprised if this were impetus for the move.

I was thinking of him as being the Pawtucket backup, since the Sox were always unlikely to disturb Swihart's development path.

Do you think that role will go to Hernandez instead?  I thought he'd never made it out of A-ball...

edit -- or, what you said just above!
