A really, really, really cool thing happened at the Sox' low-A affiliate today:

A one-hour, 42-minute rain delay before the start of the Greenville Drive's game Monday was worth the wait for Cami Lee Isbell.

Isbell, a 9-year-old from Greenwood, threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.

Little did she know that the catcher dressed in Drive gear behind the plate was her father, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Isbell, who had been stationed in Afghanistan.

After snagging the pitch, Isbell pulled off the catcher's mask, and Cami Lee covered her mouth in disbelief. After a long hug, Isbell lifted up his daughter and acknowledged the cheers from the crowd.

Video at the link.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Corey Brown's solo home run leading off the top of the ninth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and propelled the Pawtucket Red Sox to their sixth-consecutive victory, a 4-3 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium in the opener of a two-game series.

The six-game winning streak matches a season-high for Pawtucket (56-48), which is now a also season-high eight games above .500. The victory, coupled with a Rochester loss at Durham, moves the PawSox into first place in the IL wild card standings.

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the fourth game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game at third base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Middlebrooks, on the DL since May 16th, is attempting to return to Boston from finger and wrist injuries and is now 5-for-13 with a sacrifice fly over the last four games.

Brown's long ball, his team-leading 14th of the season, came on the first pitch thrown in the ninth inning by reliever Warner Madrigal (0-3). It made a winner out of Alex Wilson (3-1), who pitched a scoreless eighth and then worked around a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth to finish the victory.

Carlos Rivero (4) also homered for Pawtucket, a solo shot in the fifth against Syracuse All-Star Aaron Laffey that put the PawSox in front 3-0. Alex Hassan's RBI single highlighted a two-run first-inning rally against Laffey.

Allen Webster allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score, including back-to-back RBI singles by Manny Burriss and Jeff Kobernus with two outs in the inning. Webster lasted seven full innings and allowed six hits and three runs, while walking just one and fanning three.

Mookie Betts, just optioned back to Pawtucket from Boston over the weekend, led the PawSox offense by going 2-for-5 with a double. Jonathan Herrera also collected two of Pawtucket's 12 hits.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (65-37) broke a tie with two runs in the seventh and downed the Binghamton Mets (60-41) 6-4 in the opener of a three-game series, Monday night at Hadlock Field. Portland clinched the season series with the win; it now stands at 11-8 with two games to play.

The Sea Dogs held a 3-1 lead, heading into the seventh inning, but Brandon Nimmo changed that in a heartbeat. T.J. Rivera connected for a leadoff single against Mike McCarthy and Nimmo drove him home with a two-run homer off the video board in left-center. The blast was the centerfielder's fifth in Double-A.

Portland would respond and take the lead for good with a pair of its own in the bottom half of the seventh. Derrik Gibson connected for his fourth hit of the night to leadoff the inning and stole second against reliever Ryan Fraser.

Blake Swihart walked to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Ryan Lavarnway grounded to second for the first out, and Sean Coyle grounded to the pitcher, but Gibson was able to score and put the Sea Dogs in front 4-3. Dave Chester was next and struck out, but the third strike was a wild pitch and Swihart scored to make it 5-3.

Brian Burgamy hit a one-out solo home run in top of the eighth, cutting the Portland lead to 5-4, but the home team responded again in the next half inning. Stefan Welch took over for Lavarnway and tagged a two-out RBI single to right field, plating Dent and upping the lead back up to two and 6-4.

Robby Scott came on for the ninth and earned his second save of the season. The lefty gave up a leadoff single, but induced a 4-6-3 double play and got Travis Taijeron to pop out to second, ending the game.
SALEM

Game Story

The Potomac Nationals scored three runs in a bizarre eight inning of misplays, interference calls, and even a unconventional double play to beat the Salem Red Sox 5-2 at LewisGale Field Monday night. The Nationals swept the three-game series, and have now won ten games in a row against Salem.

Oscar Tejeda led off the eight with a double. Randolph Oduber then bunted back to the mound, and Matty Ott threw to third late to put runners on first and third with no outs. Mike McQuillan then grounded to short, and Dreily Guerrero threw late to home, allowing Tejeda to score and give the Nats a 3-2 lead. With runners on first and second, Estarlin Martinez bunted back to the mound, and was called out for straying from the runners lane, sending the runners back to first and second. Craig Manuel then singled to load the bases, still with just one out off Matty Ott. A batter later, Cody Dent hit a ground ball that went under the glove of Guerrero, charged as an error. It scored both runners and gave the P-Nats a 5-2 lead. The inning would end on a line drive back to the mound, snared by Ott, who threw to first to double off Dent. Ott was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in two and a thirds innings of work.

The Nationals opened the game with another first inning run. Tony Renda led off with a single off Sox starter Corey Littrell, scoring on an Oscar Tejeda double. Renda scored a first inning run in all three games of the series.

The Sox fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Dreily Guerrero doubled with one out off P-Nats starter Pedro Encarnacion, and moved to third on a single led by Matty Johnson. Carlos Asuaje brought home Guerrero on a groundout to first to tie the score. A batter later, Jantzen Witte tripled in Johnson to give the Sox the lead. Witte finished the series with seven extra base hits in the series.

Potomac tied the game in the sixth. With Littrell still in, Oduber reached on a fielders choice, and made it to third on a double by McQuillan. After Littrell was relieved by Ott, a wild pitch scored Oduber from third to tie the game at two.
DRIVE

Game Story

A pregame rain delay of one hour and 42 minutes didn't bother the Asheville Tourists (26-6, 67-34) on Monday afternoon, as four Tourists pitchers combined to shut out the Greenville Drive (7-25, 41-60) 2-0 to complete a series sweep.

Drive starter Jamie Callahan and Tourists starter Antonio Senzatela matched each other pitch-for-pitch, keeping their opponents off the scoreboard until high pitch counts knocked them both out after five innings. Callahan struck out seven and allowed just three hits and three walks, while Senzatela struck out five while giving up three hits and two walks.

The Tourists struck for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings against Drive reliever Sergio Gomez (1-2). Both runs came following leadoff walks, as Ryan McMahon drew a free pass in the seventh and later scored on Ashley Graeter's sacrifice fly, and David Dahl walked in the eighth and scored on McMahon's RBI groundout.

Matt Pierpont (1-0) worked two scoreless frames to earn the victory for Asheville, and Carlos Estevez and Dylan Stamey completed the shutout, with Stamey earning his 11th save.

Hector Lorenzana was the lone Drive batter with a two-hit game.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early lead and did not look back, cruising to a 10-2 win over the Auburn Doubledays Monday night at Falcon Park.

After a scoreless first inning, Lowell (17-20) got on the board first with a three-run second. After Nick Longhi led off the inning with a single, Cisco Tellez followed with an RBI double to give the Spinners an early lead. After a wild-pitch moved Tellez to third, Mike Meyers singled, scoring Tellez. It was a wild pitch with two outs that plated Meyers staking the Spinners to their 3-0 lead.

Auburn (16-20) would answer with a pair runs of their own in bottom half of the inning. A one-out double by D.K. Carey, following by a run-scoring triple from Cody Gunter and Heri Quevedo wild pitch cut the Spinners lead to one, but the Doubledays would get no closer.

The Spinners extended their lead in the third inning. The first three batters of the inning would reach for the Spinners, with Meyers plating the first run on a sacrifice fly. A Mauricio Dubon single plated another run before a well-executed double steal scored Tellez from third to push the Spinners ahead, 6-2.

Lowell blew open the scoring in the eighth. Longhi would lead off the inning with a walk followed by a Tellez single. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position, though Longhi would leave the game with an injury after taking third. After Meyers struck out, Dubon hit an inside-the-park home run, his second home run of the season, to give the Spinners a seven run lead. A Danny Mars home run, the conventional style, pushed the lead to 10-2, where it would hold for the final.

Quevedo (3-3, 9.08) pitched effectively to earn the win, allowing the two runs on five hits, three walks and a hit batter through five innings. He struck out six. Edwar Garcia and Kuehl McEachern each threw two scoreless innings, Garcia striking out two without allowing a hit, while McEachern struck out three, to close out the win
