It amazes me how people are so ready to call him a bust. Let's hope he continues this progress through a few more starts.

I think it is fair to question the progress of Ball given that he's a top-10 pick who has a career FIP over 5.00 in the minors and a 110/70 K/BB ratio in 160 innings.  It's not just that he is wild and unpredictable, it's also that he's not missing as many bats as you'd expect.  If he were striking out over a batter per inning but posting mediocre ERA/BB rates, people might be a lot more patient.  He's also not a guy getting tons of ground balls - in fact he's a heavy flyball pitcher.  Flyball pitchers who don't strike people out and walk a ton of batters tend not to translate very well.

Also, I understand he was a project and is in an aggressive level of the farm system, just trying to lay out some of the concerns folks have.  I still think he has tremendous potential, but you'd like to see him start missing more bats and displaying some improved command.  In reality his BB rate has gotten worse and he's missing fewer bats than last year.

He's a 6'6" lefty who throws in the 90s already and could throw harder. There aren't a lot of those in this country. He's obviously gotten better every year, which is fine for now.

I know he might not still pan out but we just don't know yet. I just don't understand why people have to "grade" this pick already.

Anyways, there's a thread on him if you'd like to discuss further.
