STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Durham starter Alex Colome pitched eight brilliant innings and the Bulls cracked a scoreless tie by scoring two runs in the eighth inning en route to a 2-0 shutout of the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Pawtucket starter Steven Wright matched Colome pitch for pitch for the first seven innings, as Wright blanked the Bulls on only four hits in his outing. Durham struck for a pair of runs against reliever Dalier Hinojosa (0-4) in the eighth to earn the victory. The Bulls have taken two of the first three games in the series.

The PawSox (29-33) put runners on first and third with no outs in the ninth, a rally that included a leadoff triple from Shannon Wilkerson against Durham closer Kirby Yates. Yates was then able to earn a strikeout and two fly outs to escape the jam and notch his 16th save.

Colome (1-0) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven in throwing 96 pitches. The right-hander faced only two batters over the minimum as the Bulls turned three double plays.

Hinojosa allowed a leadoff single in the eighth to Hak-Ju Lee, then issued back-to-back walks to Mikie Mahtook and Wilson Betemit (intentional) to load the bases. Justin Christian followed with an infield RBI single to third base to plate the first run.
SEADOGS

Game Story

Doubront gave up two runs over four innings. McCarthy (5-2) relieved. He began by giving up a lead-off double to Corey Jones, and then picked Jones off. McCarthy retired the other 11 batters he faced.

First baseman Stefan Welch had the big hit, breaking a 2-2 tie with a two-run triple in the eighth inning. It was Welch’s second triple of the game.

The Sea Dogs improved to 30-20, while Erie dropped to 27-31.

Portland tied the game with RBI from Bo Greenwell in the fifth and Derrik Gibson in the seventh.

In the eighth, Deven Marrero walked and Blake Swihart singled. Welch smoked a grounder down the right field line for Portland’s first lead.

Miguel Celestino pitched the ninth, allowing one run, but recording his fourth save.
Felix Doubront

Felix Doubront caught the throw back from catcher Blake Swihart, paused only briefly, stepped on the mound and delivered his next pitch.

For four innings, Doubront needed only 43 pitches, 31 for strikes.

Quick and efficient.

Felix Doubront?

A new and (the Red Sox hope) improved Doubront made a first rehab appearance Thursday night at Hadlock Field, the place the left-hander from Venezuela began to blossom years ago.

Doubront allowed two runs on three hits – all in the third inning – while striking out two and walking none.

More importantly, in terms of his rehab, Doubront felt fine

“Just feeling comfortable with mechanics and arm speed,” he said.

Doubront, 26, went on the disabled list after his May 20 start when he left early with a diagnosis of “shoulder fatigue.”

It was not like Doubront jumped out to a sizzling start with the Red Sox, going 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA.

In that stretch Doubront showed signs of his abilities, but there always seemed to be one bad inning and it usually came early in the game.

“Up and down,” Doubront said. “Some days I feel really good, other days bad. Then the shoulder issue happens. It’s something I’m taking care of right now.”

With Doubront and Clay Buchholz (also on the DL) scuffling, it only magnified the offensive woes of the Red Sox.

Doubront hopes to find health and consistency.

“My shoulder is lot better,” he said. “I wish I started my year the way I feel now.”
SALEM

Game Story

PRINCESS IN ANOTHER CASTLE: Mario Martinez had huge hits in both ends of Thursday’s doubleheader. The first gave the Salem Red Sox a chance; the second helped give them a win.

Martinez’s three-run triple sent the opener to extra innings, but the Sox fell to Frederick 9-8.

In the nightcap, Martinez clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning to help the Sox to a 4-0 victory in front of 3,369 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

NOT QUITE: The first game, a resumption of Wednesday’s suspended contest, featured more drama. After Martinez’s clutch two-out hit in the seventh tied it 7-7, the Sox left the bases loaded in the 10th.

The Keys finally broke through in the 12th, getting an RBI single from Glynn Davis and another run on a fielding error.

Salem got a run back in the bottom half and advanced the potential tying run to second, but Matty Johnson grounded out to end it.

STEADY HAND: One day after Justin Haley was named to the Carolina League All-Star roster, the right-hander pitched the nightcap like he belonged.

Haley fired six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk. He struck out seven, including four in a row at one point.

LOOSE ENDS: The nightcap was the 1,300th game in Salem Memorial Ballpark history. The hosts have won exactly 700 of those games…The loss in the first game mathematically eliminated Salem from contention for the Carolina League’s Southern Division first half title, which Myrtle Beach clinched.
