There will be games. And talk of Mookie. The standard format up in a little while.
Portland just tweeted out the starting lineup. And Mookie is getting the day off. And here I am in Portland to watch him not play today!

You'd think they would give him an off day on the road. Lots of interest in Portland.

Yeah, kind of suvks to come up here and miss him.

Portland up 4-3 in the third.

Swihart (Swig Art to my iphone) is DHing today. Batting lefty, he hit an opposite field double that landed at the base of the monster. Next time up, he pulled a low line drive, but the 1B made a leaping catch.

Marrero with a two run single (grounder to LF) with bases loaded. Edit: Actually not a hit -error shortstop).

If they need him to PH late, might be tough to keep his streak alive. I know that's really not important, but still.

I can't emphasize enough how hard Swig Art hit the ball caught by the 1B.  Looked like a sure double down the RF line.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Louisville catcher Bryan Anderson drove home four runs, two on a two-out triple during a four-run eighth-inning rally that gave the Louisville Bats a come-from-behind 7-4 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field.

With the PawSox (21-16) leading 4-3 and runners on first and third in the eighth, Anderson drove an Alex Wilson pitch just out of the reach of diving centerfielder Corey Brown. The ball rolled to the fence and scored Chris Nelson and Josh Fellhauer to give the Bats a 5-4 lead. It was Wilson’s first blown save of the season.

After consecutive walks to Kristopher Negron and Mike Costanzo then loaded the bases, Jason Bourgeois looped a two-run single against Wilson to finish the scoring. Chris Hernandez (1-3) had allowed a one-out single to Nelson followed by a walk to Fellhauer to begin the four-run rally.

Bryce Brentz’s three-run home run (5) against Louisville starter Jeff Francis in the fourth erased an early 3-0 deficit for Pawtucket. The opposite-field blast snapped an 0-for-26 skid for Brentz. Alex Hassan later delivered an RBI single off Francis to give the PawSox the lead in the fifth.

Pawtucket starter Anthony Ranaudo settled down after allowing three second-inning runs by allowing only one hit and no runs over his final four frames. Ranaudo lasted six innings and was charged with four hits and three runs.
SEADOGS

Game Story

But they didn’t threaten much after the second inning and lost 6-5 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Hadlock Field.

New Hampshire broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the seventh inning off reliever Matty Ott (0-1), who was coming off the disabled list and making his first appearance in three weeks.

The Sea Dogs scored four runs in the second, thanks to two walks, a hit batter and a crucial fielding error by third baseman Andy Burns.

But Portland got only three more hits in the game. Heiker Meneses tripled in the ninth and scored on Derrik Gibson’s sacrifice fly.

The Sea Dogs dropped to 21-12 and New Hampshire improved to 15-19. They will finish their four-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday for a Mother’s Day game, complete with pink uniforms.

Sea Dogs starter Keith Couch gave up seven hits and four runs over 52/3 innings, and most of the hits came in bunches.

After striking out the first two batters in the first inning, Couch allowed a single, walk and back-to-back doubles as New Hampshire took a 3-0 lead.

“I was fighting myself all game. Was one of those games,” Couch said.

Toronto Blue Jays closer Casey Janssen, on a rehab appearance, started for New Hampshire and retired the side in the first inning.

Scott Copeland, a usual starter, entered in the second inning and quickly gave up a single (Carlos Rivero) and double (Blake Swihart). A groundout RBI, hit batter and two walks gave Portland two runs.

With two outs, Deven Marrero’s grounder went through Burns’ legs, scoring two more for a 4-3 lead.
Travis Shaw

Last year, when first baseman Travis Shaw came to bat in early April, all he could see was his terrible batting average flashed on the scoreboard.

So what was Shaw thinking this year in mid-April, when he saw his name on the scoreboard next to a .114 average with no home runs?

“I just kept with the approach,” Shaw said. “It’s a new year. I’m a new man.”

The old Travis Shaw would fret over those numbers and try too hard to compensate, getting out of his approach – patient at the plate and working counts.

Shaw finished last season batting .221 with 16 home runs.

This season? Since that .114 start, Shaw is batting .361 (30 for 83) with five home runs. He leads the team with 26 RBI and is second only to Mookie Betts in on-base percentage (.387).

“I knew it was early,” Shaw said of the slump. “I was having good at-bats, hitting the ball hard. Knew it would turn eventually. Ever since mid-April it’s been really good.”

Shaw worked with his father, former major league pitcher Jeff Shaw, briefly in the offseason, then played well in the Arizona Fall League (.361). The Red Sox invited him to major league camp, injecting another dose of confidence.

So another slow start was not going to slow Shaw this time.

Shaw, 24, first reached Portland at the end of the 2012 season. He keeps hitting and a move to Pawtucket could come soon.

’CATS SCRATCH BACK: Day games that follow night games aren’t universally beloved by baseball players. But for the Salem Red Sox, today’s late-afternoon contest can’t come soon enough.

The faster they can put Saturday’s performance behind them, the better.

The Sox committed five errors and watched Carolina erupt for 15 hits in an 11-3 blowout in front of 4,857 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

ONE OF THOSE NIGHTS: The Sox saw trouble coming early. Left-hander Corey Littrell, who’s been their most consistent starter this season, was uncharacteristically erratic, walking six batters.

Knocked out after 2 2⁄3 innings, he was charged with four earned runs. It could have been worse had reliever Kyle Kraus not coaxed a groundout to strand the bases loaded.

SO LONG, WHEELS: Kraus gave the Sox a chance to get back in it, allowing just one run on 4 1⁄3 innings. But the Mudcats ambushed reliever Madison Younger in the eighth, scoring five runs on four hits, two walks and two Salem errors to put the game out of reach.

The Sox, who’d dazzled in the field while winning the first two games of this series, were democratic in their defensive blunders. The five errors — three throwing, two fielding — were committed by five different players. Carolina, meanwhile, turned in a miscue-free performance.

Luigi Rodriguez paced the Mudcats with four hits, including a solo homer in the third.
DRIVE

Game Story

The Drive edged the Power 6-5 Saturday night at Fluor Field as 4,383 fans watched Greenville rally and then hold on for the victory.

After taking a 6-4 lead in the seventh, the Drive overcame trouble in the ninth. Jacob Dahlstrand (2-1), who hurled four strong innings, worked around a run in the ninth to nail down the win.

"He shut them down when we really needed to keep momentum on our side," said Greenville manager Darren Fenster. "He attacked the zone, challenged contact. He was a huge reason we were in a position to win."

Dahlstrand came on in the sixth with two runs already in and got the last three outs. In the ninth, an error and a walk contributed to a West Virginia run, but he got a pop fly for the final out.

"We stayed the course well," Fenster said. "We're doing a real good job finishing games off. Tonight was a great example of that."

Greenville (18-14) was hitless through four but finally broke through against Power starter Buddy Borden in the fifth.

Bo Greenwell and Kendrick Perkins started the inning with back-to-back singles. After an out, Jimmy Rider, who played for West Virginia last season, doubled to left to score Greenwell. An error on Forrestt Allday's grounder scored Perkins. Tzu-Wei Lin put Greenville up 3-2 by singling in Rider.

This needs to be his permanent nickname, in the vein of Cabin Mirror.
