Let's play guess those starters...

Last week Salem pitched...

Tuesday: Dean
Wednesday: Wehunt
Thursday: Duffy
Friday: ERC
Saturday: LuCo
Sunday: Paez

The week before, Paez pitched Tuesday & everyone else was a day later.

It would be interesting if this was part of a regular cycle to get pitchers an extra rest, while still using a 6-man rotation.

So for example, if they repeat that pattern, this week Wehunt will start on Tuesday, Duffy Wednesday, etc., & Dean would start on Sunday.

Let's check out Greenville to see if maybe this pattern is a thing, because I know Dalton Rogers didn't pitch between the 9th & yesterday either...

Greenville is going to be a bit muddier due to injury, but since Tuesday the 9th Greenville pitched:

Tuesday 9th: Rogers
Wednesday 10th: Sandlin
Thursday 11th: JDE
Friday 12th: Perales
Saturday 13th: Early
Sunday 14th: Mullins

Tuesday: Sandlin
Wednesday: JDE
Thursday: Adams
Friday: Early
Saturday: Mullins
Sunday: Rogers

So Perales was scheduled to start on Thursday, but got scratched. Otherwise this totally mirrors Salem.

As such, if they keep this pattern this week, Sandlin would be the extra rest guy & JDE would start Tuesday.

Will be interesting to see if we get Dean & Sandlin, or Wehunt & JDE. If we get either of those combos, especially the 2nd, will be pretty telling how the org plans on running the rotations this year.

Portland seemed pretty clear cut, but there's a pretty reasonable chance they're up to the same thing, but Wikelman pitched so little his 1st 2 games that they brought him in a week early as a reliever...

Tuesday 9th: Wikelman
Wednesday 10th: Coffey
Thursday 11th: [RAIN]
Friday 12th: Penrod
Saturday 13th: Olivares & Dobbins
Sunday 14th: Bastardo

Tuesday: Wikelman
Wednesday: Coffey
Thursday: Penrod
Friday: Olivares
Saturday: Dobbins
Sunday: Bastardo (& Wikelman)

So they have sort of morphed themselves up a day & can do it naturally & this week would be Coffey/Penrod/Olivares/Dobbins/Bastardo/Wikelman.

Worcester has been rolling with a 5-man rotation, but obviously there have been some ins & outs. Going back further because the Jason Alexander skip is kind of interesting to me.

Friday 5th: Fitts
Saturday 6th: BVB
Sunday 7th: Criswell
Monday 8th: Alexander

Wednesday 10th: Uwasawa
Thursday 11th: Fitts
Friday 12th: Gambrell
Saturday 13th: [RAIN]
Sunday 14th: BVB

Tuesday: Uwasawa
Wednesday: Fitts
Thursday: [RAIN]
Friday: Gambrell
Saturday: BVB & Alexander
Sunday: Uwasawa

So the logical thing is Fitts, Gambrell, BVB, Alexander, Uwasawa (or maybe like Hagenman or Vlad if Uwasawa is needed to start for the Sox) & Fitts again.

I'm going to guess that Dean & Sandlin get skipped & we get the following starters on Tuesday:

Salem - Wehunt
Greenville - JDE
Portland - Coffey
Worcester - Fitts

Or maybe I'm seeing a pattern that isn't there, or maybe something totally out of the blue will happen. Exciting times.

You nailed it on projected starters for the week. This is from the team:

Tuesday: Fitts
Wednesday: Gambrell
Thursday: Van Belle
Friday: Alexander
Saturday: Uwasawa
Sunday: Fitts

Nice! According to SP, not only did I crush the easy ones, I also crushed the hard ones & broke news of a pattern of usage I haven't seen reported anywhere:

Greenville - JDE
Portland - Coffey
Worcester - Fitts

reveal your sources
Lol game logs & a little bit of free time to math out what's going on.

You should ask Brian Abraham about it lol

It's a pretty interesting way to use a 6 man rotation, but have people regularly pitching every 6 days instead of every 7, while buying 1 guy an extra 5 days off every 6 weeks.

It won't really be proven until Dean & Sandlin start this Sunday. But I think I'm definitely on to something.

What are we thinking about the chicken farmer this year? Wehunt has impressed me
Control is going to be a big deal for him. In his 1st 2 starts he only got through 5.2 innings total because he walked 7 guys & was running up his pitch counts.

This start, & another one in the preseason he limited walks & was great. So it'll be a matter of fine-tuning that consistency - which probably isn't easy for a 6'7 guy. Definitely reasons for optimism, though.

Ian Cundall said Wehunt was one of the biggest surprises in spring which is why he shot up the rankings after not being ranked. He saw something he liked. Wonder how long they keep him at starter though.

Yeah, hard to rank a guy who was an underslot draft pick who pitched 1 FCL inning.

This was the outting that caught everyone's attention:

I assume they'll keep him as a starter until he proves he can't do it. I think the next step once he gets comfortable is probably adding a cutter & increasing his starter viability.

Wehunt is done for the day:

5 IP
0 runs
3 hits
1 bb
5 k

70 pitches, 44 strikes (62.9%)

ERA down to 1.69.

Natty Cruz came in for the 6th.
Cruz pitched a scoreless 6th, but allowed 4 in the 7th & Salem lost 4-2.

JoJo Ingrassia came in with a runner on 3rd & 1 out & allowed the inherited runner to score, but none of this own in 1.2 IP, 1 hit 2 k's.

JoJo has now pitched a complete game this season (over 5 games).

9 IP
0 ER
7 hits
1 bb
15 k

My pre-season Greenville sleeper!

Interesting question.

I think Hayden Mullins (my #52, not ranked by SP) is a guy not on many people's radars who could really pop this year if he's finally healthy. He struck out a fairly preposterous 15 hitters in 6.1 IP last season after being drafted in the 12th round in '22. His stock fell because he came with an arm injury, but he's a high stuff guy.

David Sandlin (my #12, SP #13) isn't a sleeper, but his stuff has gone up a couple levels in the pitching lab this off season & I think it's interesting he's on the same pitching staff as a couple guys in Cooper Adams (#191) & Conor Sensabaugh (#200) who have like no pedigree of college success, but did well in I believe the Tread lab to earn spots on this team. So they aren't sleepers per se... but it will be fascinating to watch how the lab grown pitchers do this year.

I also think guys like Early (#57) & Feeney (#129) are interesting because they got the Greenville placement over guys like Duffy & Wehunt from the same class, & over guys like Paez & ERC.

JWY (#99) has flashed nice stuff this spring & is quite a character. If he's healthy & pitches well, he could easily be in Portland before long.

On the infield, I don't see a lot of sleeper potential. Luis Ravelo (my #51, SP #44) plays defense that will be fun & Ahbram Liendo (#127 but probably should be higher) is a menace on the bases so he could be a fun watch (30 steals in only 71 games last year before getting hurt). Both of those guys need to cut down on their strikeouts to be truly interesting, but both are 20.

Hoping for breakout seasons from Cutter (#37) & especially Mikey (#17), but neither are sleepers.

Greenville seems to have way too many "Outfiedlers" as the graphic calls them. Juan Chacon (#79) seems like the biggest sleeper candidate from the group as he looked good this Spring. He's another guy like Liendo who stole a lot of bases in Salem (20 in 57 games) while being an ~average hitter, but then earned a promotion. Chacon is 21 & showed a bit of pop & defensive skill in Spring Training.

Castro & Campbell aren't sleepers, but I'm glad Campbell is finally getting some love from SP & Speier et al after being way underrated. Lopez & Gonzalez are both returning players who may get some 1B & DH reps.

The fact that Caden Rose (#111) received a Greenville placement is a really good sign after he didn't get into any game action after being drafted in the 7th round last year & receiving an underslot bonus. There isn't anything that impresses me that much in his profile, but you never know.

I wouldn't really call any of the catchers sleepers. I'm a Ronald Rosario (#84) stan, but not really sure he's got a next gear unless he can drastically cut his 30% k-rate. He only recently turned 21, though.

This was a really long non-answer for which I apologize, but the definition of "sleeper is always challenging".

If I'm going to pick one pitcher & one hitter who aren't currently in the SP top 60 to crash the party, I'll go Hayden Mullins & Juan Chacon.
Chacon's OPS may only be .744... but it's the best of anyone in the lineup.

Nazzan was 1-4 in his return.

Bleis was 1-4 with a double.

Albert Feliz was 1-3 with a walk.

Alcantara, Fraymi & Montero were all 1-4.

The Garcia brothers both missed another game.

Isaac Coffey allowed 2 hits, a walk & hit a guy in the 1st, but got out of the inning unscathed with the help of a Phillip Sikes outfield assist.

Coffey also hit a guy in the 2nd inning, but induced an inning ending double play lineout.
Coffey allowed 2 in the 4th & threw way too many pitches.

4 IP
2 ER
4 hits
4 bb
2 hbp
4 k

90 pitches, 48 strikes (53.3%)

Theo Denlinger came in for the 5th & got lit up for 4 runs - 2 earned, 2 unearned due to his own throwing error.

I feel like when the pitcher is the one who makes the error, they should earn the resulting runs. Prove me wrong.

Cade Feeney put in a quality relief effort, too. He's been up & down, so nice to see:

2.1 IP
0 runs
1 hit
0 bb
2 k

He left with a runner on 1st & 1 out. Jonathan Brand came in & retired the next 2 hitters to end the inning.
Brand pitched 1.2 scoreless, 1 hit, 1 bb & 3 k's.

In 6 games this season, Brand has pitched 11.2 innings without allowing an earned run, 8 hits, 3 walks & 18 strikeouts.

Greenville won 8-0.

Gasper grounded out to end the game (he was 1-4 with a walk), but at least there was a bit of drama.

BLAZE was 2-5 with a homer, a double & 4 RBI.

ROMAN & TEEL were each 1-3 with 2 walks.

Sikes was 1-3 with a walk & a steal (5).

Lugo was 1-5 with a double.

Went to the Yard Goats game. Half way thru the game the goats brought in a guy throwing 99, and Mayer ripped one right up the middle knocking the guy on his ass.
Really like the way Teel receives the ball.
