Heading into tonight’s game, I’m pretty despondent. A constant Sox optimist, from the late 70’s through the Pedro years always felt that This Was The Year….and then after Grady’s shit show, I gave up. They really were cursed. Something was just wrong with them. I let my darker thoughts in, and all through the season and up to game 7 of the ALCS I just could no longer allow myself to be positive about the team.
Then- for 20 years straight my optimism clock was reset. Every player they brought in, brought up, found in a pile of their own vomit even…. Would turn into a great player. They’d avoid injuries, find hidden gems, make the great play, hit the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.
I find myself today in a similar space as I was in the days after Grady’s infamous non-decision…. But it is only in retrospect that I see the positives in that ‘04 team. In late April I knew they would collapse, choke or generally shit themselves.

Bobby Dalbec should get the Trea Turner treatment. The whole crowd should give him a standing ovation when he comes up.

There were a few "Let's go Bobby" chants during his last two plate appearances last night, that I thought were nice.

Watching him play is obviously not fun right now, but I have never gotten the impression that he is anything but a good teammate and hard worker, so it's nice to see that at least some in the crowd continue to support him. What he is going through right now can't be easy at all. I mean, he was on track to be a guy who was going to make millions and set his family up for a long time after the second half of 2021, now he's on the verge of 30 and likely won't ever get anything better than a league minimum salary unless something drastically changes. I feel pretty bad for the guy, in all honesty.

Asstastic bumblers is what I've seen so far. It would be nice to string a few wins together and see some hot streaks. I want that. Let's have that, instead of this. Also, jettison Jansen, please. Never trust a closer on the downside of a career, not for more than a year, anyway. Win tonight, boys.

I am on the Bobby D Train. I think the guy has talent just the worst luck. He will break out.

Definitely has talent.... maybe not for professional major league baseball though?
Seriously though, after his '21 season I thought they could reasonably expect a good player to rotate across 1B, 3B and DH to hit around .775 with 30HR's (and still a horrifying amount of K's). I wasn't expecting his Bonds-esque August and September, but not his abyssmal June and July either. Just something in between seemed quite reasonable, and getting him as basically a backup corner, mostly DH guy would reduce some of his awful 1B defense we saw.
I'm now far away from that. It took me all of '22 and his bit in '23 that convinced me. But at this point, I'd take his abyssmal first half in '21 even! Sheeeet!

Feels like we went from 7-3 to 9-9 in the blink of an eye. Let's not drop below .500 shall we?
Cleveland and Baltimore are off to hot starts, neither of which is flukey, while the Sox are mired in yet another injury spiral. Being around .500 right now isn't a particularly bad sign. The issue is whether we will ever have a deep, healthy team with guys playing consistently enough to minimize the bad habits in the field and on the basepaths. I'm not too horrified by the current status, but also not feeling totally jazzed about the longer term. It feels like there is no play that can't result in a flukey injury right now.

Bobby should go back to AAA and work on pitching. He threw 200 innings in college with a 2.65 ERA. That was at Arizona, not a D3 school or anything.
If he could be a 5.00 ERA mop up reliever who can also cover third base and first base and (try to) hit against LHPs, that's a pretty useful player. The new Dave McCarty. We did pretty well when we had McCarty pitching (3 games!) and hitting (85 OPS+!) for us.
(Note: this will never happen.)

With Devers DH'ing. Yoshida is on the bench. Asked why, Cora said they preferred the other OFs. Makes sense. Yoshida is .246/.278/.365 since the All-Star break.

The worst thing about the Sox right now is that it's either going to be Dalbec or Hamilton, and neither one is close to being a major league ballplayer. Other than that, let's go.

Every time I see Papelbon paired with Jim Ed on the pregame all I think about is how, in a performance foreshadowing the end of that season, Pap blew a three run lead in the ninth which lead to an 11 inning loss and completely ruined Rice’s number retirement.

Probably picking nits here, but IMO Casas could/should have taken that ball to the base himself. There was another play (perhaps last night) when he could have done the same, but opted to go with a high, floating underhander to the pitcher that made it a much closer play than it needed to be.

I admire your optimism mauidano, but I can't take it anymore. But I don't blame Bobby I blame management. They should have helped him change scenery a couple of years ago.

I am liking Youk's new dulcet tones. His radio voice has gotten softer and more expressive.
