Pretty surreal watching this with all that is going on. Basically the only sporting event still being played?
It's surreal and spooky.Pretty surreal watching this with all that is going on. Basically the only sporting event still being played?
If this is the only way to never have to hear "Get in the hole!" guy ever again, I'd be ok with this being a permanent thing.I think this is one sport that will be better without fans. Also no fans to stop balls heading for really bad places.
It had to be mostly about optics, yes? I mean, most golf courses aren't closing, from what I can tell. It's been an interesting day in Ponte Vedra today. Its hard to express how proud of this event the PGA Tour is. Deciding to cancel had to be really, really hard.
The main caveat is that we don't know how long our current situation - social distancing - will last. The second caveat is to point out that the goal of social distancing is to slow the spread, not eliminate it. Which means that I don't see us (as a society) returning to "normalcy" with regards to sporting events in a month. I would also point out that the odds are that many tour players have been exposed at this point and we will eventually have a confirmed case among the players. In which case, the Tour simply shuts down (or "suspends") indefinitely.Odds of the Masters being canceled? Of all the kinds of sporting events that we have, I'd think that golf is the least likely to be coronavirus-problematic. Especially if they simply don't let the fans in (or severely limit the number of fans). Instead of 16,000 people packed into an arena, all sitting inches from each other, we're talking about 60 golfers and a few thousand fans (maybe) scattered over a 345-acre plot of land. There's a lot of space for social distancing. Even the athletes aren't needing at all to be up close and personal, unlike in basketball or hockey.
Plus, the Masters already has a very elite air about it, and can carefully screen everyone that comes into the place.
Also...basically no other sports are in existence right now, so the Masters would have the entire sports world watching only...their tournament.
Seems like the Masters should be doable, if any sports at this point are doable.
Monahan said the tipping points were the Florida theme parks closing and concerns from European players about the travel restrictions. It had to be mostly about optics, yes? I mean, most golf courses aren't closing, from what I can tell.
Makes sense. They clearly wanted to continue but he had no choice in the end.Monahan said the tipping points were the Florida theme parks closing and concerns from European players about the travel restrictions.
It is. You wonder if waiting a couple of weeks wouldn't have been a better idea. That's a month away. Alas, keeping people safe is more important than my sadness about one of my favorite events.Just got a text saying the Masters is PPD.
For regular people play golf courses seem like a relatively good place to be going forward. Limited contact with others. Lots of open space. Might want to avoid the locker room.It had to be mostly about optics, yes? I mean, most golf courses aren't closing, from what I can tell.
And yet I've received 3 emails today from Denver area municipalities that the courses are closed until further notice. Golfers don't have to interact with each other, but staff members still do I guess. For regular people play golf courses seem like a relatively good place to be going forward. I think that is more in line with other government run entities being shut down that are run by the parks and rec department. And yet I've received 3 emails today from Denver area municipalities that the courses are closed until further notice. I was chatting to one of the Pinehurst assistant pros this morning , whilst they have been affected on the resort side of things to a degree, member play has not been affected. There's plenty of rounds being played and business as usual. A lot of new disinfection and sanitory procedures have been implimented. This sounds in keeping with emails I have received from other courses along the lines of " this is what we are doing to try and keep you safe but we will continue to monitor the situation".I think that is more in line with other government run entities being shut down that are run by the parks and rec department.
Why would a golf course close all summer? Isn’t that peak time for most? The course is basically dormant until mid-late September anyway, right? Plus it looks nothing like it does for the tourney until pretty much April. I feel like that matters for the powers that be. My guess if it doesn’t happen before mid May, which logistically seems like a long shot at best, they cancel and come back next year.
Not for super rich people in Atlanta. It's way too hot and humid and they all have other memberships. Most courses in very hot locations overseed with a totally different kind of grass in the summer than in the rest of the year. It's likely that members of Augusta never want to experience that at their beloved course. It's also possible that it's better for the course itself to just let it go through it's natural cycles. Why would a golf course close all summer? Isn’t that peak time for most?
I was combing through the dvr last night and fired up last year's final round. Tiger's putt from the back of the 9th green took about 20 seconds to get to the hole. I forgot how good that putt was.Going through some Masters final rounds that are on YouTube. Guessed they stopped doing it, 2017 is the last one on there. I was kinda hoping they just burned the 2018 tape and put 2019 on there but no dice. Watching 2011 now.
I watch these every year at about this time to get ready for the tourney. It's perfect to fall asleep to at night.Going through some Masters final rounds that are on YouTube. There are a ton of US Open final round broadcasts on Youtube too. I watched 2008 the other day.8 pm FS1 tonight is the replay of the final round of the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock. It will be fun to watch this since I was there for it and haven't seen a replay of it before.
The back 9 is even wilder. I think the lead was changing on a minute by minute basis.Tiger just made eagle at 8 to get to within a shot in 2011. Forgot how bananas the front 9 was this year. The most common memory from this one was Rory's tee shot on 10, but this thing was already pretty wild before then.
I’ve been doing the same going back to the 80s.Going through some Masters final rounds that are on YouTube. Guessed they stopped doing it, 2017 is the last one on there. I was kinda hoping they just burned the 2018 tape and put 2019 on there but no dice. Watching 2011 now.
I may have told this story before so apologies if so, but I watch a lot of youtube golf vloggers. A lot. TXG, Mark Crossfield, Erik Anders Lang, etc...The main guys that do this are pretty young, and sometimes I'm surprised at what they don't know about old players and the history of the game (or maybe I'm just getting old). .
Tough crowd.EAL is horrible. Guy stinks out loud.
"I don't keep score! But here's my video of me trying to break 90!"
Thanks for this. I’m going to check it out.If we're talking Youtube golf content, I'm a No Laying Up stan. Their different series and videos are incredibly well produced, entertaining, and varied. Their Strapped series where 2 of the guys do 3 rounds of municipal golf, food, and lodging for $500 is their best stuff, it's a spiritual cousin to Bourdain's Parts Unknown, but for golf.
