If you're talking about career playoff victories at AT&T Stadium (two each), sure. Otherwise, I think I'd take my chances on McCarthy being able to get more out of this roster than Garrett ever could. Particularly the offense.McCarthy is a lateral move at best. whatever in Jerry's world I guess.
Of those four coaches, the only one I'd want to see retained would be Colombo. The other three, for various and in some cases obvious reasons, will need to go. I don't necessarily think retaining Brown would be a disaster but I don't think putting a different voice in Zeke's ear would be the worst thing in the world. This is what I was talking about for the record
Seriously. This Marvin Lewis being the new Dennis Green thing is totally jumping the shark.Good thing we can stop pretending the Rooney Rule is still a thing. More honored in the breach, indeed.
I feel like a lot of the benefit of the Rooney Rule is getting up-and-coming minority coaches in front of owners and getting their names out in public as candidates. Does Flores get the Miami gig if he doesn't interview with Arizona the year before? I don't know, but maybe not. Interviewing Marvin Lewis does nothing in this area. If you're gonna just do a token interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule, at least talk to Jon Embree or one of the other Fritz Pollard guys.Good thing we can stop pretending the Rooney Rule is still a thing. More honored in the breach, indeed.
I know that field is rather uninspiring but Matt LaFleur might have something to say about that particular distinction. It's not like the most successful coaching hire of 2019 was the 1 minority coach hired out of 8 hires made, or anything.
I agree. At best, this is a lateral move. McCarthy barely won any big games with Rodgers in his prime. And Rodgers in his prime was one of the more dynamic players in the NFL. He is no longer that. And Green Bay always lost their big games to teams they should have beaten.McCarthy sucks...I don't expect him to be any better than Garrett.
I only have some faith in the 2020 season because 2019 was so anomalous statistically that a revision to the mean would probably put this team back in the playoffs.
Yep....considering what he had in GB, I think the track record there is pretty underwhelming. Rodgers in his prime was arguably the best QB in the NFL for a couple years there. It's no knock on Dak or anyone else if they can't reach that ceiling.I agree. At best, this is a lateral move. McCarthy barely won any big games with Rodgers in his prime. Also, I don't think Dak's ceiling is as high as Rodgers in his prime. We'll see, but I think this is a horrendous coaching move.
Couldn't it be argued that the overall talent on the offense is at least comparable to those Green Bay teams, though? I think we all would have hated to see what Rodgers could have done with someone like Zeke in the backfield with him. If they can keep the trio of Cooper-Gallup-Cobb at wide receiver and add someone a little more consistent than Jarwin at tight end, I'd love to see what he could do with that offense. Especially if he can do something about Dak's footwork and accuracy issues.Yep....considering what he had in GB, I think the track record there is pretty underwhelming. In my fantasy world, I'd love to see what a guy like Andy Reid could do with Dak...but obviously that isn't a plausible option. I wouldn't have hated McDaniels though....I know the Patriots fans in here are a bit sour on him after the end to this season offensively, but I think his style would be interesting with a QB that has the mobility of Dak and he's probably ready to be a HC in his second try now.
I mean, in the context of who Jerry was gonna hire, this is probably about as good as we could expect since he wasn't going to hire some new guy making the leap. So I agree there....I was more lamenting that I'm not expecting it to produce that much change and he's probably overrated if one only looks at his record. He probably comes with at least a modicum of credibility for the locker room at least. He has the SB ring as a HC to show these clowns.Couldn't it be argued that the overall talent on the offense is at least comparable to those Green Bay teams, though? The defense will be another story entirely but that late-season choke job should give them enough draft capital to address some of the issues on that side of the ball.
I'm not saying McCarthy was my top choice - or even in my top 5 - but, as retreads go, I'm not sure there were too many better options.
wait, why is McCarthy loathsome? Ineffective, perhaps, but loathsome?Jones and McCarthy are both loathsome and deserve each other.
Aaron Rogers thought so.wait, why is McCarthy loathsome? Ineffective, perhaps, but loathsome?
Yeah. The more I learn about his exploits, the less I like the hire. When being the last head coach to wear a suit on the sideline is your calling card, that doesn't bode well.Sounds like Mike Nolan is being brought in to be the defensive coordinator...another unimpressive hire.
I have no idea how accurate this tweet is, but the feature article on McCarthy's retooling "sabbatical" was such promotional copy.
As someone noted, is he allowed to talk to the QB not under contract?I liked one of the first responses - “maybe Dak isn’t his QB “
Is he technically not yet a free agent? As someone noted, is he allowed to talk to the QB not under contract?
His press conference kind of bore that out - at least on the analytics side. Maybe he was being coy but the lack of depth in his answers was pretty telling that it's likely a bunch of hot air.I have no idea how accurate this tweet is, but the feature article on McCarthy's retooling "sabbatical" was such promotional copy.
Not that I was going out on a limb or anything but it's already begun. It's Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett all over again with the announcement that Moore will continue to call plays. I predict McCarthy will be gone and replaced by Moore before the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2022.He'll be replaced by Kellen Moore long before his offensive scheme gets stale.
That should be enough to send shivers down the spine of any Cowboys fan... yeesh. Not that I was going out on a limb or anything but it's already begun. It would if it weren't all so predictable. The instant they announced the hiring of a retread coach - rather than someone who would require a long-term investment like Matt Ruhle - I knew this hire was nothing more than a seat warmer for Moore. That should be enough to send shivers down the spine of any Cowboys fan... yeesh.
Yeah. I was expecting them to semi-reach for a CB there. But that was an awesome strategy. Just take best player and juice your offense even more. You need to score a ton in today’s NFL so might as well add to strength there.Cooper/Lamb/Gallup is such a dynamic trio. I loved the Lamb pick for Dallas, especially given Cooper’s injury history. This is going to be one high octane offense.
Agreed. They couldn’t have scripted their first 2 picks any better. At some point Dak will drop his demands a smidge and they’ll be off and running. Of course, Mike McCarthy is probably the last coach I’d want with this kind of personnel given his conservative tendencies.Yeah. I was expecting them to semi-reach for a CB there. They got their value CB picks later on anyways.
I'm sort of in a wait-and-see mode with this. Kellen Moore showed very wide-open tendencies to start the year last year until Garrett slapped on the governor (aka, Zeke was fully 100%). I don't really know if McCarthy is more conservative than Garrett but I'm willing to see how it plays out before throwing him under the bus.Agreed. Cooper has missed 3 games in his career. What injury history?Cooper/Lamb/Gallup is such a dynamic trio. I loved the Lamb pick for Dallas, especially given Cooper’s injury history. This is going to be one high octane offense.
Hes always playing hurt. Not a ton of missed games, but seemingly a GTD every week.Cooper has missed 3 games in his career. What injury history?
Perfectly fair to wait and see. I just think that the Garrett and McCarthy types do a disservice to the team when you have this kind of talent on offense. Dak is a pretty solid QB. Zeke is an elite RB. Cooper is a pro bowl WR. Gallup just put up 66/1106/6 in his age 23 season, basically Brandin Cooks numbers minus a few receptions due to volume. And now you’re adding an elite WR prospect in Lamb. As a fan of football, I want to see this team let loose and play aggressive. Just hope the coaching staff lets them.I'm sort of in a wait-and-see mode with this. I'd say the analytics thing is a point in his favor but I'm taking the same approach with that. Though I am a bit more cynical about that actually being a thing since it seemed like it was mainly lipservice.
Not disputing that but he always seems to be dinged so even though he plays, some games he’s a non factor and the offense suffers because of it.But get his ~75 receptions and ~1000 yards almost every year, so even hurt he’s pretty damn good.
He was definitely dinged in the 2nd half of last season pretty badly. He fell off a cliff and it coincided with his leg/knee injury worsening against the Lions. Not disputing that but he always seems to be dinged so even though he plays, some games he’s a non factor and the offense suffers because of it.
If he's healthy, he will have sick production. I mean, just look at the 2nd half of 2018 after the trade and even when he was "mostly healthy" in early 2019. I say "mostly healthy" because he was dealing with a foot issue in early 2019, but it clearly wasn't as serious as the knee/ankle/quad issues he developed later in the season. He's still only 25 years old, so I'd expect big numbers from him for several years anyway. In FF it felt like he was always a game-time decision. The guy still produces, he just makes you sweat it out leading into the game.
Presence of Lamb should also allow him to be more conservative with his returns. For past 2 years, Cowboys passing game has shut down without Cooper. Now, you can rest him and still Lamb/Gallup out there, which is a pairing us Pats fans would drool over.If he's healthy, he will have sick production. The one silver lining with his injury situation is he has shown the ability to play through them....even if at reduced production. 75% production for him is still very good.
Gallup has been sneaky in how quickly he's developing into a very good receiver. I would think Lamb being added into the equation is going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses.Presence of Lamb should also allow him to be more conservative with his returns.
