USA final roster announced.
Such a ripoff we aren’t guaranteed a US/Canada matchup.
Ah, c'mon, it's only natural that they could be in different pools. They will play, provided they can each hold up their end.
That said, Canada doesn't exactly look like world beaters, losing to Finland 5-2 in preliminaries, and ekeing past the Swiss, 4-3. If they are to do well at all, it will have to come from home ice and momentum.
One would have to expect the usual favorites will be in the running for the title.
It's a fantastic sporting event, and my son and several friends will be in attendance.
Thanks for starting the thread.
It’s the first time since 2011 they’re not in the same group...it’s the biggest rivalry for USA hockey, so I bummed to miss it. They had a few classics, and for a few years it was on NYE.
Finns and Swedes look real tough this year too.
USA- Kyle Keyser (G, UDFA)
Finland- Urho Vaakanainen (D, 2017 1st round)
Czech Republic- Daniel Bukac (D, 2017 7th round), Jakub Lauko (F, 2018 3rd round)
Russia- Pavel Shen (F, 2018 7th round)
Canada- Jack Studnicka (F, 2017 2nd round)
This tournament is always a blast. Looking forward to it.
USA opens tonight versus Slovakia on NHL Network at 6:30.
My flight lands at 7. Think they'd delay it an hour if I asked real nice like?
US basically dominating Slovakia through two periods but down 1-0.
2 quick goals in the third, up 2-1.
After an aborted landing I got home 2nd intermission. Nice of them to wait for me to score I guess.
Do they know about pulling the goalie in Slovakia?
Worried about goal differential?
Not the first time I’ve noticed this in this tournament. Seems like there is a entirely different philosophy internationally in terms of pulling the goalie.
Anyone else on Canada want a hat trick tonight?
13-0. Still 6:25 left
Vaakanainen looking dominant so far, as you would expect an NHL-ready player to be in this tournament.
Anyone have a link to Canada Swiss game?
Jack Hughes out again tonight.
US lost to Sweden 5-4 in OT, but they came back from a 4-0 deficit with 10:00 left in the 3rd, and a 4-2 deficit with under 40 seconds left. Crazy. Similarly crazy, Sweden has now won 47 consecutive preliminary round games.
I turned that shit off after 3-0.
Watched the Russia-Swiss game tonight, and it was quite good. The Swiss are clearly better this year, took 2-0, and 3-1 leads, but the Russians proved to strong, winning 7-4. Most interesting play was when Swiss guy rushed in at the blue line, was clearly tripped by a Russian D, kept going to the net, and was hacked down again by the same guy. The refs talked it over, and called 2 separate penalty shots. Both were missed. I wonder if they scored on the first whether the second would have occurred.
Thus far, I think we can say:
Contenders: Canada, Sweden, USA, probably Russia
Difficult outs: Switzerland, Finland
Quarterfinal pretenders: Czechs, Slovaks
Actually, the Finns probably fit in the first category.
Yeah that 3rd period of Russia v Swiss was crazy. Anyone else sitting on the couch watching these games tonight?
I will try to see some of the US game but I’ve been sick and that game is past my bedtime.
Canada Russia headed to the third tied 1-1. Phenomenal game so far...very physical, with great goaltending at both ends. Canada definitely dominated the second period.
I watched the third. Good game.
Enjoyable first between US and Finland. Pretty even, both teams with some good looks- US up 1-0, capitalizing on a turnover to score with under :20 to play.
3-0 US through 2 periods. Fairly even game, with the big difference being goaltending. 2 pretty questionable goals by the Finnish goalie in the second period there.
That 4th was tough too...I’m surprised he started the 3rd. Team needed a bump and he’s clearly off his game tonight. Give the boys a spark to start the 3rd.
Not sure what the iihf rules say, but that sure looked like a targeted head shot.
Pretty crazy how anti-US these crowds have been all tourney.
Good slate of games in the quarterfinals today:
Jack Hughes is back in for the US.
You're surprised that the US isn't a popular presence outside of the US? What news-free zone have you spent the last two years in?
Swiss up 2-0 on Sweden with less than 10 minutes to go.
Swedes bounced. Wow.
I’m surprised that when a group of teenagers from the US plays a group of teenagers from Kazakhstan in Canada, and 95% of the crowd is anti US, yeah.
NHL Network gives us 3 minutes of the Canada game, then flips it to NHL Tonight...unreal
Let me help you with that.
Here's an article on the NAFTA negotiations, "Canadians Are Reacting To Donald Trump's Mission To Insult Canada In NAFTA Deals." It includes Trump saying that the US approach is "going to be so insulting they’re (Canada) not going to be able to make a deal.” It also includes several responses along the lines of "F*** Trump."
Another piece from around the same time notes that "Canada faces an angry and confrontational American president who is determined to pound America’s best friend in the world into submission on trade issues" Link
Here's another piece, one that uses "bully" in the headline rather than just in the text: Trump is a bully who thought Canada was weak. He was wrong about us
Meanwhile, a Google search on "Kazakhstan insults Canada" turns up nothing relevant...
Inside the US, Trump is seen as a divisive force representing one of two main parties. Outside the country, he's the face of America. And, well...
Please...you’re looking far too into it. Canadian hockey fans, especially in Vancouver and Montreal, have been booing the shit out of US teams for years, regardless of the politics.
Can someone explain the delay of game against the goalie? The announcers are avoiding talking about it so assume they have no idea either.
I thought that was a pretty bad call. The goalies are encouraged to play the puck when they can, but he pretty clearly mishandled the puck, so just covered up after.
Apparently if the ref tells the goalie to move it, they’re supposed to move it. If they don’t, it is delay of game.
Why are we watching the studio instead of seeing Finland tie it up with 40 seconds left against Canada?
Every time Jack Hughes touches the puck something good happens.
Great read by Norris to get turned back to the offensive zone as soon as that puck came loose.
Yeah Hughes looks legit. Best player on the ice.
Whoa, Canada gone. WOW
Love that it was Comtois that got stuffed on the OT penalty shot too. He’s been diving and flopping all over the ice all tourney.
Apparently it is the first time Canada has failed to medal as the host country.
I thought he was terrible this tournament
Can't believe he was given a top 3 player for us
No offense for this team. 5 goals in the past 3 games.
DiPietro played really well all tournament
