You'd think a site loaded with degenerate gamblers would have a thread on the Derby Flameaway, Audible, Good Magic, Justify, Bolt d"Oro, and Vino Rosso in some sort of box play.

So, who you got? Who's drinking Juleps?

Put money on a mudder would be my advice. Maybe Lone Sailor as a Longshot?

My old man would always make note of which horse is being ridden by the head of the jockeys' union. This year it's Vino Rosso with Jockeys' Guild Chairman John Velazquez at the wheel.

Lone Sailor has one race in the slop. So do Justified, Combatant and Enticed. Front runners. Wire to wire in this mess is the only way to go. Promises Fulfilled?

What a mess. I'd be putting 10 bucks on every horse that's 40-1 and over.

Won the exacta box with Justify and Good Magic for about $100.00. Not bad.

Definitely putting some money on Justify for the Preakness, he looks really strong for a Triple Crown opportunity.

I was at a party where the host runs his own pari mutual window. I won $80 on a $10 bet.

Did American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown turn people away from horse racing? Seems this is the least noise I've heard about the Preakness in years, and not just on SoSH.

So do we think Justify runs away with it again or is there going to be an upset?

I generally care not at all about Horse Racing, mostly because I keep expecting horses to come up lame and that makes me sad. But I watched the Derby this year at a fabulous party, won $50 and a T shirt, and found myself waiting for the Preakness to start today. That said, it sure looks like a nice track for broken horse legs.

This thread is lame. Justify won again!! But he didn't dominate. Feeling is he loses at Belmont.

He was getting caught at the wire. Belmont's length will hurt him.

Beyer speed figure came back relatively modest. I think it was a 97. Timeform figure, however, came back huge. They had Justify's Preakness as better than American Pharoah's.

I think Justify might actually be better than American Pharoah and I'll be rooting for him to complete the sweep, but I don't think he's going to do it. It's so much development compressed into such a short period of time, and some of these horses that skipped the Preakness and will come to Belmont fresh are pretty good. I think Hofburg will take a good shot at him.

He's a sight to behold though. Good Magic is a heck of a horse and Justify basically put him to bed in five strides when Smith asked him to. He's so powerfully built up front and when you see him in full stride it's easy to think he's unstoppable.

Assuming that justify can’t win the Belmont because he was being closed on at the Preakness is nonsense

Justify got in a speed duel with another very good horse in good magic, slipped early and expended a ton of energy in slop putting away good magic and still held on to win

I Doubt the same scenario plays out in the Belmont. My only question is how much racing on two slopfests in two weeks affected justify condition. If Justify is anywhere near fresh he will win the Belmont

Who does everyone like in the Belmont today? I’m leaning towards vino rosso for payoff purposes. I’ll probably be playing some combo including vino rosso justify blended citizen and tenfold

Funny there was a long drought between 48 and 73, then we had Triple Crowns in 73, 77, and 78, and now the drought from 78-15 and another one soon after that.

Amazing Triple by Justify, but holy cow did anyone see Gronk go from dead last to second? Crazy race.

Gronkowski looked like he was ten lengths back coming out of the gate. A little better start and maybe he catches Justify.

I was just happy to not see Gronk riding one of his buddies like a pony in the stands after his horse finished second, so we didn't have to hear from the media about how he's putting himself in harm's way.

Nobody knew who Justify was in February, and he wins the TC 4 months later. Horse looks beautiful, and it was a fantastic race after the slop of the first two legs. That said, I love horse racing, and year after year, I'm starting to enjoy it less and less because all I can think about is what kind of "help" they are putting into these horses. Watching a horse come from literally nowhere to triple crown winner in such a short time just exacerbates that for me. Never was a huge fan of Baffer either...

My experience (as a veterinarian) with horse racing leads me to believe that these animals are tested for PEDs more than professional athletes.

Shouldn’t we be hearing of more (or any) disqualifications? Was thinking about that today too.
Guess you can make the case that “they are all doing it”? Think of the foals though...

Actually a great story is Dancers Image, only horse to be disqualified as winner of the Kentucky Derby. Very controversial. I used to drive by the farm in Rye, NH with a big sign still proclaiming it the winner

I don't know. With so much money involved in this sport, I 'm inclined to believe that the chemists and scientists are constantly finding ways to stay ahead of the testing. I could be completely wrong, and it's just a feeling, but with a sport that has been as corrupt as horse racing has been throughout it's history, I have a hard time taking most of it at face value. If it has gotten cleaned up, then that's great. I'm just a skeptic.

Have we been seeing faster times with these horses? Seems if they're using nosemo science to dope them to the gills then we would just like we saw with home runs in baseball or average speed in the tour de france.

The science seems to suggest that horses' times are as fast as they're going to get. I've never seen anyone suggest trying to create a superhorse with steroids--most illicit treatments are for injury recovery (and I suppose recovery from exertion as well). As Cutman says, there is extensive testing with split samples and there are definitely positive tests and penalties. A lot of positive tests are for painkillers, used to get a less-than-100% horse back on the track. But at the level of Triple Crown races, the horses are usually worth too much for anyone to risk an injury from a horse running hard without being sound.

I'm actually thrilled that no one heard of Justify before his debut in February, because it means they did the right thing with a big horse and let his development catch up before they brought him to the races. TVG had a nice feature back around Derby time about Baffert looking for the right race for Justify's debut, and telling the track manager, "This horse can win the Triple Crown." Hofburg only raced once last year in September before sitting out through March. Tenfold didn't race as a two-year-old. Restoring Hope and Noble Indy didn't start their careers until December. Precocious two-year-olds don't necessarily continue to be stars at three as their peers catch up in development.
