Considering they could have tendered him at the 2nd round tender and only a little more than than the low round tender and no one would have given an offer sheet.I'm surprised at that, actually. Seems like an overpay.
2nd round tender is 2.553 mil. this year. I don't know how CJ's contract is structured for this year's number, but the AAV is 4.5, so it essentially cost the Broncos an extra $2 million and some guaranteed money.Good point, Elway screwed this one up pretty bad. What is the difference in terms of $ / cap hit?
That seems like an overpayment, even in this inflated marketSounds like Okung to Denver per Schefter

This would enable Denver to be able to trade OT Ryan Clady...

Sources tell me that OT Russell Okung is close to finalizing a 5-year deal with the Denver #Broncos worth $10.6M per year.

I have no informed opinion on the cost, but protecting the QB is a hugely important part of the game whether the QB is franchise or not. It may even be possible to win a Super Bowl with a below average QB if you have a good defense and O-line.Its an overpayment indeed and why waste the money on Okung when you have no franchise QB to protect.
This will never stop being funny.Okung should help the run game significantly too. Although he will need to be careful Sanchez doesn't run up his asshole.
His shoulder is a mess. Good luck with that.Okung's deal is really only $5M guaranteed with some bonuses and an option to trigger 4 more years at top pay. Perfect for Denver's current cap situation (2016 is tight, next year and beyond are much less so).
Clady can be cut now for a $600K cap hit or after 6/1 with zero cap hit. If he's willing to rework his deal, he can likely be traded for a late round pick.
Okung has his own checkered injury past, but nothing like Clady's ACL.
Thumbs up. assuming there are no big injuries, this is a big step up from the professional turnstile that started at LT last year.
If/when they ditch Clady they can add another QB potentially (Kaep still possible at the right terms). Elway can also cut punter Colquitt to save another chunk of needed.
You might have jumped the gun on that one ... Oh wait ... Thats also something Okung does frequentlyHis shoulder is a mess. Good luck with that.
If Clady is willing to restructure, there's no point in doing so until he becomes a free agent where he would have multiple options. If he isn't, no team will trade for that contract and injury history.Okung's deal is really only $5M guaranteed with some bonuses and an option to trigger 4 more years at top pay. Considering none of his deal is guaranteed, Denver will have a few months to decide if he's healthy enough to keep around. His shoulder is a mess. Good luck with that.
There are teams still trying to reach the salary cap floor who might want him and don't want to have to bid for him after he's cut. We'll see. Even if he is traded, it won't big much coming back.If Clady is willing to restructure, there's no point in doing so until he becomes a free agent where he would have multiple options. In short, he will be cut
Is Tyler Sambrailo the plan is Okung is not healty then?Considering none of his deal is guaranteed, Denver will have a few months to decide if he's healthy enough to keep around.
(Might have been better to pay an agent, Russ)
It looks like they prefer Sambrailo at Guard going forward, but last year he was plan B when Clady went down (and then he got hurt too and Plan C was Schoefiled). They might follow the same course, or look at Schofield again or maybe they're going to draft a Tackle. As of now Clady is still a Bronco, too. Too early to tell.Is Tyler Sambrailo the plan is Okung is not healty then?
It remains to be seen, doesn't it? It definitely will require some changes to ZBS run blocking, but in general I think it's a fine rule change and likely overdue. Just too dangerous.86spike, how will the new chop block rule impact Denver's running game?
Disagree QB is a major downgrade for the season as a whole. Manning the worst QB in the league for half a season. Osweiller was better but, what, below average in the aggregate? The position obviously sucks right now, but its still reasonably possible Denver gets better QB play next year and it's hard to downgrade from what they got from Manning last year in the regular seasoni think denver is a 8-8 football team next year QB is a major downgrade idk if the O-Line will stay healthy d will silp some
but in 2017 72 mil of cap room with a option to save about 15 more mil off means that with Von mega deal denver should have at least 55-60 mil to spend
it means if elway hits the draft like 11 and 12 denver will still be around
Yup, they ran on a 3rd and 8 late in the super bowl when they just needed to run things out because they didn't trust their broken down quarterback. The bar is low.Disagree QB is a major downgrade for the season as a whole. Manning the worst QB in the league for half a season. Osweiller was better but, what, below average in the aggregate? Sorry, we were going for "a San Francisco 49er's quarterback"KUSA—The Denver Broncos interest in Colin Kaepernick can now be qualified as serious.
An NFL source confirmed to 9news that Broncos general manager John Elway met Thursday in Denver with Kaepernick, who is currently the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback. It was the second meeting in two weeks between Elway and Kaepernick.
If the other team agrees, yes. It's been that way for all teamsThe link to that story wouldn't work on my phone so apologies if this is covered in the full piece but... Elway is now allowed to openly meet with players under contract with another team? That's cool
He would have to in order to join Denver. Denver has less than $2 million of cap space left. They need to maneuver some space to make it happen and Kaep would have to lower his base salary by putting in more bonuses and incentives.Don't see why kap would take a pay cut when his current salary is guaranteed

Source: "It is indeed a mid round pick, now they [#Broncos] just need Kaepernick to agree to new lower $ deal, and it's done."
Which is why I don't think it'll happen. He would have to in order to join Denver. Denver has less than $2 million of cap space left. They need to maneuver some space to make it happen and Kaep would have to lower his base salary by putting in more bonuses and incentives.
That wouldn't help the Kaep situation. It's actually not that hard to create space for him because they can just release Ryan Clady and that would take care of the problem as long as Kaep restructured.Which is why I don't think it'll happen.
I suppose Denver can use a higher draft pick to entice San Fran to pay the difference. Would that be allowed? They would essentially be buying extra cap room with a pick
Yes it would help this situation if it's allowed and both teams are willing. That wouldn't help the Kaep situation. It's actually not that hard to create space for him because they can just release Ryan Clady and that would take care of the problem as long as Kaep restructured.
Yes it is. Elway runs the franchise with a sense of entitlementWow, that's sorta ballsy by the Broncos. And wasn't his contract panned for being outrageous...but then when the parameters were released, it actually looked like a bad deal for him?
Kap had 1 1/2 good years, taking SF to the Super Bowl in the second one, while he's been lousy most of the rest of the time. Maybe the two ex-quarterbacks in Denver, Kubiak and Elway, think they can help him recapture the higher level of play. Hoyer is just a forever journeyman and they surely think nobody will ever go a long way with him. Denver is also playing with house money, having just (ugh) won that big game, what's it called?Replacing the putrid production by Peyton with Kaepernick means it'll most likely be a lateral move (Kaepernick was 35th in DYAR with Manning just behind at 36th, for example).
If they're going for the bottom of the QB barrel, why not save millions of cap space and sign Hoyer? As awful as Hoyer looked at times last year, it was still miles (well, yards) better than Kaep.
No he's not taking a pay cut. When I say restructure, I mean he has to convert some of his base salary into bonuses and incentives to lower his cap hit.Yes it would help this situation if it's allowed and both teams are willing.
Your use of "restructure" is code for pay cut if the reports are accurate. It's not just that Denver wants to push some salary to a future year, lowering his cap hit this year while he still collects the full amount one way or another. The reports suggest Denver doesn't want to pay him his full salary.
