Not to be too "Get off my lawn" here, but didn't they used to pick, like, two proper relievers for the All Star Game?

ETA: Ned Yost brought as many setup guys as starting pitchers. Who on earth would rather watch Brad Brach and Will Harris than Kluber, Carrasco, or Quintana? And none of those teams even needed a representative.

(2nd edit: wrong Cleveland pitcher)

Interesting that Yost built a "conventional" pitching staff with 5 starters and plenty of relievers instead of the usual all star pitching staff of a bunch of starters and handful of closers which is what Collins did.

where the darn libs live
I'm generally happy with my picks. I think I did okay - though I couldn't have expected Ned Yost to have a stroke while making his selections.

*yes, I know the players vote too*

Ya, I don't think either is particularly egregious. Kluber, while he has good peripherals, also has an ERA of almost 4. Carrasco missed over a month, and his last 2 starts have improved his numbers a fair amount and may not have been considered, depending on when the voting happened.

AL starters I think the fans nailed except for Hosmer, which should have been Miggy or Davis.

NL I think they only really missed on Russell (Seager, Crawford, Story).

Overall, I think a good showing by the fans this year.

I voted for Pedey until my eyes started to bleed. Brandon Crawford of the Giants was my NL pick.

Even though he's at least third and maybe fourth-best on that list?
Depends on if you like crazy defensive numbers or not. According to bWAR he's at 3.2; above everyone on that list, and 6th overall in the NL (non-pitchers). fWAR likes him even more, awarding him 3.3, though they place him at #9 overall.

Pretty sure he was talking about Pedey. And I'm not sure how mauidano voted for Crawford since he's not on the ballot.

Corey Kluber was named to replace the injured Marco Estrada on the All-Star roster. You can certainly make an argument for Jose Quintana of the White Sox, who has a lower ERA, but Kluber leads AL pitchers in WHIP. It could also be a strategic decision, as the NL bench leans a little right-handed.

espn: Aledmys Diaz is replacing Matt Carpenter on the NL All-Star roster.

This brings up a point: Shouldn't one of the "final five" be the first considered for non-pitching spots that open?

The needed a Cardinal as Carpenter was their lone rep.

But yeah, seems like it would make sense to not announce these substitutions until after the fan vote, then back fill with anyone that didn't get picked (provided the positions line up). Considering there was a 3B and a SS on that list, one would think

Here's how the HR Derby lines up:

Mark Trumbo (26) vs. Corey Seager (17)
Robinson Cano (20) vs. Giancarlo Stanton (19)
Adam Duvall (22) vs. Will Myers (19)
Todd Frazier (23) vs. Carlos Gonzales (18)
