O'Hara and Heath have done a better job providing width than Rapinoe-Anyone has before today. O'Hara has been especially impressive, staying wide and tracking back well.

Yeah, the ref is faked out by the Chinese player flopping in the aftermath, but Johnston got kicked in the breadbasket.

China has parked the bus and begun diving for calls. Ninety minutes to penalties for them.

Chinese keeper needs the Hugo Lloris tether. What the fuck is she doing out there?

This has the makings of one of those games where team A dominates in every facet, and loses 1-0 on a fluke goal .
Or China goes full Germany.

Yeah, that's my fear. China has zero incentive to chase this game; they can sit back, absorb pressure with 11 behind the ball and wait to go to kicks.

And Tactical Ellis is on record as giving the team the ol' 'Arry Redknapp - just go out there and run around a bit.

Not at 46. Still on the bench, despite giving the halftime talk.

Is there anything Ellis hasn't outsourced? What would you say you do, here, Jill?

China putting one player in the box on a corner...is weird. So is using two subs already. It's like they got the FIFA memo saying the USA won the game and are managing to not be embarrassed, as opposed to HERM EDWARDS.

I've become a huge fan of Johnston. Just everything you want out of that position, she's been phenomenal every match

She's an American Kompany or Chiellini. I'm not joking when I say she's a better overall player than John Brooks.

Kompany obviously springs to my mind. But I try not to be like Liverpool fans.

And I agree, she really might be that good

Liverpool fans don't know what a good defender looks like, silly.

Seriously, can we stop playing Press out wide please? She sucks at it. I know O'Hara had to come off, but why sub on a center forward who doesn't track back or stay wide? Is there no one else on the roster who can do those two basic things?

Hey announcers? It's 1-0. If China nicks an unlikely goal, your congratulations for the US "dominance" is gonna sound pretty fucking silly. Not that you haven't all game long...what with the clownshoes references to first names of players and the youth-level cheerleading. At least Dellacamera is putting in a professional shift but both these dunderheads on color should get fucked.

Leroux would have been about 1000x better to substitute against a tired China defense than Wambach.

That was clearly the best the US played all tourney. Not sure if it's because China had almost zero possession capability, but the score doesn't really show how well they played

I'm starting to think O'Reilly ran over Ellis' dog or something.

Only if you are trying to score. Ellis was sitting on the lead, Leroux has no possession or holdup skills at all.

You have a much better eye for this than I do, but it certainly looked like they were still trying to score, especially with the 3 or 4 long balls that the glacially slow Wambach could not catch up to, thus surrendering possession. To me, China's defense looked gassed at the end and the immobile Wambach in the middle was exactly what I imagine they were hoping for.

I personally think it was a pointless sub that late. And obviously you never really stop trying to score,
I'm just speculating based on what Wambach does well, and how Ellis has made substitutions with a lead in this tournament. She seems to be very conservative with the lead, and a conservative coach would put in Wambach over LeRoux there because you're just killing off time and you wanted the player you can hoof the ball up to who can win a battle then hold it up. In the last 10 minutes all the conservative coach cares about is keeping the ball down the other end of the pitch, more so than an increased chance of a goal, but more end to end stuff.

Wambach is their best forward to defend set pieces, which looked like the only way China might score. Not saying I'd have made the sub, but I at least see some logic in it.

You can't expect to win when you miss chances like Tancredi has. And that slip was of Gerrardian proportions.

Canada's still getting chances though. I don't think they're out of it.

Good call.  Juicy rebound and it's 2-1.

I think they said it's her first World Cup game, despite this being her 3rd tournament.
