Mike Pelfrey rocked by the Dodgers today, to the surprise of no-one. How does this guy keep getting work? The outing will raise his ERA to almost 8 and the Twins' starters ERA from its pregame mark of 6.08. For the Dodgers, Puig 4 for 4 to get his average up over .300 for the first time since the Australia series.

Why are the O's-Pirates playing at 4/7 while the Sox-Rays and Twins-Dodgers are playing at 1/7?

O's-Pirates are doing a single admission doubleheader rather than a split admission. But now they're in rain delay again in the first one so who knows whether they'll get them in.

But research by Tango and his compatriots suggests teams have been doing it wrong. After examining how important each batting event (single, double, walk, etc.) is to each lineup slot — based on factors such as how many runners are likely to be on base and how many outs they’re likely to hit with — the data says a team ought to bat its three best hitters in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 slots, with the most balanced hitter occupying the two-hole. That’s a far cry from the conventional wisdom of slotting the best hitter either third or fourth, and putting a weak contact specialist at No. 2.

Wainwright has given up 6 runs through 4 1/3. Can't wait to see how the Cubs blow this one.

How can Santos possibly be this bad?  He just honked another lead, this time giving up a single and 2 HRs to the Pirates to turn a 5-3 lead into a loss.

His numbers are atrocious, and that's being generous.  His BABIP is right around .500 and his HR/FB% is 28% (!!!).  His LD% hasn't spiked and he's actually getting ground balls over 50% of the time.  His K% is an outstanding 38%.  I want to think he's been tremendously unlucky.

But he's walked more than a guy per inning, which is obviously beyond atrocious.  And if guys are hitting 1 out of every 3 or 4 fly balls out of the park, that's got to mean something, right?

He's like some super combination of bad in some areas and tremendously unlucky in all the others.

Not here
So I'm watching a little Yanks/Rays in extras and I'm not really sure who I want to win when I see Heath Bell up in the Rays bullpen and I cringed.

In his defense, 3 of his 9 walks on the year came in that one epic bullpen meltdown the Jays had in Minnesota, the one where their pen walked 8 in the inning. Santos had I think 3 wild pitches in that inning to go along with all the walks. I enjoyed the box score so much that I went back to watch it the next day. It was pretty clear he had no handle on his breaking stuff, and if we're being charitable we could blame the cold. Now why he would keep trying the slider in that situation I have no idea.

So don't get me wrong, the dude is a train wreck and has no business being called a closer, but that game was messing with his line a bit, at least until the back to back meltdowns this week.

First start in LF and Grant Green probably just stole a HR from Beltre.

Dice K still being Dice K for the Mets. Comes in with a 3-0 lead and leaves with the score tied and runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.

KC/Padres game was pretty fun to watch.

Just ended on a walk off 2 run GR double by Will Venable after Mike Moustakas had put the Royals ahead in the top of the inning.

Would be a big loss to the Orioles given how he is hitting this year.

All the extra inninng games were pretty fun to watch late last night. So was the Yankees/Angels.

Just one small nitpick. Venable did not hit a "ground rule" double.  It was just a regular automatic double.  It's a pet peeve of mine, but there is no ground rule for a ball bouncing into the seats.  Ground rules are only for park specific things not already covered in the rules (Wrigley Ivy, catwalks in Tampa, etc.).
Also, he only gets credit for a single, because he didn't bother running to 2nd.  But your point stands - a lot of fun to watch these games last night. The most fun I've had watching baseball on a Sox off day in a long time.

A walkoff replay overturn in Pittsburgh. Bottom of the 9th in a tie game. Play at the plate initially called out. Replay overturns the call and the Pirates win.

Posey really fucked that tag up. I am guessing partly due to not wanting to block the plate, and partially to get his leg out of the way due to the previous injury on a similar play.

3 more hits for Tulo tonight. His slash line is absurd: .425/.526/.802

Arenado doubled to extend his hit streak to 26 games as well. He has a hit in every Rockies game since April 8.

Colorado as a team is slashing .300/.348/.496/.844 this year. At Coors Field, they're hitting .344/.392/.587/.979 as a team. And neither of those numbers are counting their 21 hit/12 run outburst through 7 innings tonight.

Edit: including tonight, Tulo is now slashing .660/0.721/1.191/1.912 at home. Yes, a .660 AVG, .721 OBP, 1.191 SLG, and 1.912 OPS.

Memo to Angels - perhaps the guy on pace to give up 30+ home runs should NOT BE YOUR CLOSER.  Just a thought.

I must be seeing things because right now, on May the fucking 7th, Troy Tulowitzki has a bWAR of 3.6. Three point fucking six wins above replacement, one fucking month into the season. Holy shit.

Even when he cools off, he's got a shot at 10 WAR.

Edit: in case anyone thinks bWAR fucked up, he's got an fWAR of 3.3. Through 30+ games, he's been a 15-18 WAR player. Ridiculous.

Isn't that some sort of interference? Must've been pretty distracting to the catcher.

6 1/3 IP for Felix Hernandez today: 13 baserunners and no K's. Interesting.
Had a quick scan and looks like his only other MLB appearances with no Ks.

Apr 18, 2007. Only 0.1 IP for some reason though.
Aug 19, 2008. 5IP.

Based on him not making another appearance for a month after the bolded game, I think we have to presume an injury of some sort.  And Google says elbow tightness.

Brad Boxberger just came in against the Orioles with the bases loaded and no one out and struck out three hitters on nine pitches. That's pretty effective.

The Royals walked Cano in the 3rd inning of a scoreless game with a runner on third and two out. They did it to get to Corey Hart, who bats right handed. What's odd is that the Royals pitcher, Danny Duffy, is a lefty. I guess the Royals have decided that Cano is not the guy who's going to beat them.

M's won the game 1-0 after Corey Hart drove the run in with a base hit. After 8 scoreless innings from Hisashi Iwakuma, Fernando Rodney made it interesting by issuing two walks before getting the second out. (And the first was a sac bunt.)

My hatred for the intentional walk in all forms grows by the day. If no one has the stomach to outright ban it, then at least the gods can punish the freaking morons who employ it in the third freaking inning.

Peralta and Gomes and the Rays go homes. Bullpen soils the bed again for the Rays....giving up 5 in the 7th to blow a 2-1 lead.

Brandon Belt was HBP in tonight's 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. He was moved to the DL with a broken thumb.
Tough break re Belt, just when he was showing some real power. Call up Susac?

The Giants have that great bullpen again, and the starting pitching is looking as good as any team's right now. Dodgers must be pulling their hair out. In fact, Kruk or Kuip mentioned last night that Mattingly had a team meeting before Thursday's game telling the players they weren't preparing for games right, taking them seriously enough, something like that. They've been the giants' bitch so far this season.

I don't think Susac will be the first up. My guess is that they will move Morse to 1B and put Blanco in LF or move Posey to 1B (on the days he isn't catching) and leave Morse in LF. If they do call up another position player, it will be either Ishikawa (but he is also injured at the moment) or Adam Duvall.

Edit: Well, so much for my guesses. They just called up Tyler Colvin.

I understand the L-R balancing of the line up in principle but placing Jose Tabata between Pedro Alvarez and Ike Davis just seems stupid.

Anyone who still complains about interleague needs to tune into the Yankees-Mets game right now. Two mediocre teams are playing in what is normally the most sterile ballpark in all of baseball, and yet the atmosphere tonight is incredible.

Also, it looks like there was some sort of European-football style ticketing arrangement where a couple of sections in left field were reserved for Mets fans. This is something I'd like to see a little more of, particularly for localish rivalry games, as I think it really boosts the fan involvement.

Price gives up 1 run thru 8, but Rays score zero....until old friend Fernando Rodney gives up a lead off homer to dejesus in the 9th to tie it up. Now 1st and 2nd with 2 outs....
