Price comes off looking childish and petty with regards to the Eck incident. I'm sorry, David, that everything isn't sugar coated and awesome for everybody.

It doesn't seem like price is alone as reading that made it seem like a good majority of the players hate Eck

On the day of the episode, Price was standing near the middle of the team aircraft, surrounded by fellow players, waiting for Eckersley. When Eckersley approached, on his way to the back of the plane (Sox broadcasters traditionally sit in the rear of the aircraft), a grandstanding Price stood in front of Eckersley and shouted, “Here he is — the greatest pitcher who ever lived! This game is easy for him!’’

When a stunned Eckersley tried to speak, Price shot back with, “Get the [expletive] out of here!’’

Many players applauded.

I'm still trying to figure out why we should give two shits about how David Price or anyone else on the team feels about Eck. Is this sort of "incident" newsworthy in the other 27 MLB markets?

I'm sure this kind of thing happens behind closed doors with other teams. But when guys like Price do it publicly multiple times(Evan Drellich incident in NY) it speaks to a mentally weak team.

Actually all the players who applauded Price come off like assholes in this article, particularly JBJ. I knew he tweeted that picture. I had no idea he set Eck up to take it with that tweet in mind.

I know Eck was made a special advisor to the A's this year but insisted it wouldn't change his commitment to NESN and covering the Sox. Notwithstanding the efforts of Sox brass, it's hard to believe this won't change that.

David Price seems to be the guy he showed himself to be years ago, when he and his gf called out Ortiz. If this leads to a chill between Eck and the Sox, that's very sad.

Price absolutely comes across as a petty asshole if that story is true. Why bother making it a public spectacle like that? This is after he said he was going to ignore what the media said about him and not talk to them.

The real question is why did this ever make public news.

Not as upset with what Bradley did. He went with snark on Twitter, where snark abounds. And he was 25 and had just established himself in the majors after a lot of people said he couldn't.

Price, 31 and a Cy Young winner, deliberately set up a confrontation in an enclosed space where Eckersley was completely outnumbered and when Eck tried to respond, profanely shouted him down. And then he started it again later in the flight.

Phony tough guy. The classic asshole at the bar who has no intention of fighting loudly telling his buddies, "Hold me back!"

merloni and crew had some interesting discussion about this on the baseball show. Really hammered Farrell and the team for lack of reaction and apology to Eck. Also described a very negative vibe or at least strange culture in this years clubhouse. Made me very down on our chances.

Has Lumer Loni been in the clubhouse?

Not sure, but he mentioned he has heard it from a number of the people with daily access and the other two on the show agreed.
Yet other than the price stuff, has anyone who actually has access even hinted at anything clubhouse related? Or they just tell Lumer instead of mentioning it themselves.
I think they're all full of shit and they're taking price and deciding it means there's something wrong with the clubhouse. I could be wrong, and Lumer has done well to get so much mileage out of being the semi-literate friend of nomar, but when the first comment about something in the clubhouse comes from a guy not in the clubhouse, I'm skeptical.

We knew Price was thin-skinned, but I really hope the story exaggerated the part about players applauding. Pretty terrible look if true - taking some criticism is part of the job, and most of the 2017 Red Sox couldn't hold Eck's jock.

The Price is wrong and needs to go. Pitch better and opt the fuck out. Best case!

so... the players hate Eck?..so typical of today's generation. They don't know how to handle someone who speaks their mind, and actually tells it like it is. Pampered little snowflakes. This team is becoming very unlikable.

Price has pitched well since the Eck incident with the exception of his recent start. A bad start and boom, CHB rolls out his typical playah hatah hit piece. I'm more concerned about the snitch who dropped the details to the perfect member of the media when it comes to hit pieces.

Is there anyone who thinks most of the details are exaggerated to make everyone look bad?

Disclosure: I loathe CHB

I wouldn't be so quick to call the team unlikeable based upon the rantings of the media. You're playing right into their hands.

I'm no fan of the author at all but I tend to believe this story.
The piece was rolled out the day after Price pitched poorly for the first time in weeks. It was filled with second-hand accounts and slanted with the authors obvious disdain.

Price may indeed be a problem, but that article is meaningless.

I disagree, this article isn't "meaningless". Shaughnessy spoke to five people and tried getting Price and Eckersley to go on the record, they would not. What's he supposed to do? He actually did a pretty good job, because the CHB is a columnist so his article is supposed to be "slanted". This wasn't a beat reporter reporting the day's events. Shaughnessy did his job on this piece. You might not like it, but it's not the CHB's fault.

It's pretty obvious that Price was an asshole towards a guy who was doing what he gets paid to do -- talk about the Boston Red Sox. YMMV on whether that's an offense that Price should be condemned for, but it's certainly not meaningless.

I like David Price when he pitches for the Red Sox mostly because he gives them a pretty good chance to win on his days on the hill. I don't know David Price, but what I do know of him is that he seems to make big deals out of things that shouldn't be. And whether scrutiny for his off-the-field activity is fair or not, it's becoming a thing. These things begin to gain traction and start to affect ball clubs. I don't know whether the Sox have defused this or not -- it doesn't seem like that they have if Shaughnessy is able to get five people to talk about the incident.

This is not meaningless in so much as this can really hurt the Red Sox down the stretch.

I agree with your overall take but I don't think the CHB gets to have it both ways when he writes what is essentially an investigative piece. Yes, he has a column, but that was much less of an opinion piece than an investigative report. When he writes such a column, I think he needs to play it straight.

I'm not saying that he did not and this is a side point.

For me, the take away is that Price is a poser and his teammates who cheered for him when he gutlessly dissed Eck for doing his job are insipid assholes.

There are a number of reasons why a first place Red Sox team is not really resonating with Boston fans like such a team would have in the past. They are really not playing all that well. Ortiz is gone. Everyone pales next to the Patriots. We have a lot of other entertainment options. John Farrell is always a step away from blowing a game with that vacuum between his ears.

But add the overall sense around this team to the list. It's probably the most intangible thing on the list but ever sine Pedey did the "it's not me" thing and Price whined about the fans and Boston, I think it became a little tougher to embrace these guys. I'm a world class homer and if they rip off ten in a row and are headed for big things, I will put all of this aside very quickly. But for now, these guys don't evoke the feelings of other winning Sox teams, and even some lovable losing teams, and that a sizable group of Price's teammates could cheer that assholery is likely a part of it.

I'd caution not to let all the players off the hook, but the timing of this piece definitely isn't a coincidence.

As I posted on the Shank thread a few weeks ago, CHB has been setting up Price since he got Price to open up to him six weeks ago and began needling him as Price started melting down. The plan was all going swimmingly for Shank until Price started pitching well -- at which point, CHB mostly clammed up.

So I have absolutely no doubt that this latest piece was in the can for when he faced the Yankees last week. Unfortunately for Shaughnessy, instead of getting rocked in Fenway, Price went 8IP and 0R against the Sox arch-nemeses, so he and his editors held this piece for his next crummy start.

Even still, we are witness to an epic troll job by the all time epic troll.

My only take is that I don't trust that CHB (or anyone getting it second hand) can give an accurate retelling of the way it went down. If you look at what may be the bare facts about it, the JBJ pic, the waiting and announcing, the applause, etc. it seems to me to be stuff that grown men that are around each other all the time might do in a half assed sarcastic way and not mean it the way its portrayed. Sort of a joke with a purpose, etc. I can't imagine that Eck is that chapped about the tweet, or the pic that led to it, or that 25 guys clapping were doing so to send a message to a guy that we can't stand you. These are grown men used to a clubhouse. I can't imagine inside the building they are as thin skinned as this makes it appear. It's a large amount of focus on something that should have stayed quiet.

Edit: Having said that, I play golf with a buddy that is a constant joke guy, needling everyone over and over, etc. The second the tide turns on him, he turns into a 2 year old, will actually walk ahead and play alone if he's on the other end of it. Just childish stuff from a guy who constantly dishes it out, and he's 52. So who knows, I don't know these guys, its possible some of them are sensitive to the level where normal makes no sense.

The bolded is on point.

I don't want to sound like I'm defending Price, because I have no friggin' idea what actually happened. At the end of the day, I'm quite prepared to believe that he's as much of a petty, insolent child as others have asserted.

The problem I have is the pearl-clutching. Because acting like a petty, insolent child is not an abnormal condition for pro athletes. Many, if not most, pro athletes have a kind of delayed maturity about them, owing to the artificial environment they grow up in. This has been true forever, but it's exacerbated today by the incredible amounts of money involved and the almost intolerable amount of media coverage.

So (to answer JMOH) I agree that CHB's article wasn't meaningless - that was a sloppy throwaway. But it is suspect because CHB exists to foment controversy and drive his own sense of relevance. That doesn't mean he's wrong, and given the coverage of the flight in question, there's obviously more than a grain of truth to his story. But let's just say that I have my doubts about his take on the bigger picture.

I've been thinking about a point you touched on here - why this team isn't resonating with a lot of fans the way a first place team should. That in itself would make an interesting thread. Between the Price B.S., the Pedroia incident (which was a bit of an eye opener for me), and Farrell, there is a lot going on.

The alleged JBJ/Eck incident is ridiculous if true. What kind of immaturity does that require?

There is some evidence that we have a new 25 players, 25 cabs dynamic. Call it 25 players, 25 Ubers.

You might be right about this. But, if this wasn't a big deal why hasn't Eckersley or Price said, "Hey, we we're just fooling around. Price got a little salty at what I said, but it's all good. These things happen from time to time on baseball team."

The problem I have is the pearl-clutching. Because acting like a petty, insolent child is not an abnormal condition for pro athletes. I'm certainly not clutching my pearls here, these guys have been around enough locker rooms to know how things are there. But to say that this is SOP for athletes is letting Price off the hook very easily. It's just another check mark under the column of dumb things that this guy is doing to himself. If he doesn't like attention and wants his play to speak for him, that's fine. Quit acting like an asshole and self-sabotaging himself. In other words, if you don't want to be trolled, quit feeding the trolls.

I really want to like David Price. He's a hell of a pitcher, he's smart enough to have attended Vanderbilt and he seems to have interests outside of baseball. That's all awesome. But he's making it really difficult to root for him and I'm not exactly sure why.

This is exhibit 1 of why Boston has such a poor reputation among some players. The Globe, in the guise of CHB, apparently thought it was worth the clicks to air dirty laundry about an internal issue that probably has examples on most other teams...and judging by some of the responses here - it's worked.

"I hate David Price"

Fuck the media. It's a fucking sports team. If it were up to me, I'd advise the players to never speak with a sports gossip columnist again. Go to page 6 for the tits - it's more legitimate.

This team doesn't resonate because they are the Royals trying to win with pitching and defense. A strategy that can work but isn't all that exciting in the regular season.
For the first time in at least two decades they don't have a legit power threat. Chicks dig the long ball and this team doesn't hit the long ball.

This is the take that I have. It would be very easy to dismiss this as "it was blown out of context", but that hasn't happened. CHB's a hack and loves to stir the pot, but the response (or lack thereof) seems to point to a kernel of truth in his piece.

It's pretty hard to defend Price until someone comes out and says something that hints this was an overblown media troll job.

This is hardly unique to Boston. ESPN has aired plenty of dirty laundry with respect to the Seahawks and Cavaliers recently, with plenty of locker room gossip being aired in both cases.

Perhaps in KC the incident would be forgotten by the local media covering the team. But Boston ain't Kansas City, and that's hardly news.

It's not just that. They're 11th in MLB in runs scored.

I would think if you polled fans, it's more about personalities, fair or unfair.

Amen. Price may be a jerk, or he may just be a different type of guy. It's what he does between the lines that counts.

We (yours truly included) are like a bunch of teenagers burying our noses in the latest story on Justin Bieber's love life. We know CHB for what he is - a trouble-maker who creates non-existing rumors and then reports on the trouble he's stirred up as if its real news.

This seems to be specific to the RS. I don't recall similar stories to the Celtics or NEPs, currently at least. (I don't follow enough hockey to comment on the Bruins.) I'm not sure why that's the case; maybe it goes back to Ted Williams' feuds with Bill Cunningham and Dave Egan. I can see how that reputation affects a free agent's thinking about coming to Boston.

Too bad we have to let someone like CHB foul the air with his crap.

Just had a thought: Eduardo might be one of the most popular players among his teammates. He seems to be always among the first in the dugout to congratulate, hug a fellow pitcher after a good outing, things like that. And, you had to feel for the guy just coming off an injury. If Eck had gone "Yuck" over, who else, I don't who, but certainly a guy like Sandoval, Price might not have said anything.

"Yuck" could mean a lot of things.
Maybe it meant "the team's counting on the guy coming back to solidfy the rotation; this looks like it was a bad outing and he's not ready yet". Simple as that. Not trashing the kid, just concerned he can't contribute.

Or, yes, maybe he's knocked ERod in the past (let's face it, when he's awful he's AWFUL, no real surprise someone would take swipe at him).
