Went to the Greenville Drive game is Greensboro last night. Darwinzon Hernandez was great - 5 IP, 2 ht, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 Ks, 78 pitches (52 strikes).
Shortstop Santiago Espinal had a good night and one great inning. In the bottom of the 5th, with a runner on third on a one-out triple, Espinal made a nice pick on a short-hop grounder and threw a perfect strike home to cut down the run. On the next batter, he made a nice running catch on a flare into short left. Then he led off the top of the 6th with a double to the wall in left-center. He made several other good plays at short.
Bobby Dalbec blasted a no-doubt homer to left in his last at-bat; the previous three he struck out.
Ryan Scott looked good, going 2-3 with 2 doubles and a HBP.

Did you see the radar guns on Darwinzon?

Looks like Josh Ockimey is finally starting to heat up again. He went 3/5 with his 11th HR of the season last night. It's his 3rd HR in 7 games. He had gone 117 PA without a HR from May 31st-July 2nd. The last 7 games have brought his July line to .269/.359/.537 on a .350 BAbip.

April: .338/.427/.563
May: .305/.424/.484
June: .212/.362/.271
July: .269/.359/.537

Last year, he started off amazing. He hit a slump and never broke out of it. This year, he had a 113 PA stretch of .198/.354/.253, .267 BAbip. However, during that stretch, he had 22bb and 25 strikeouts. He is back up to .278/.393/.454 for the year with a K% rate of exactly 25% and a BB rate of 15.7%. Last year he was at 25.9% K rate, 17.6% BB rate. Most of his improvement this year stems from a .359 BAbip, last year he was at .284.

For reference, last year he hit .165/.305/.331 on a .205 BAbip the final 295 PA of the year. He had a 27.5% K rate and 15.6% BB rate during that stretch.

Angel Padron went 4.0 ip, 2h, 1er, 2bb/7k in relief for the GCL team today. For the year, he is now at 23ip, 14h, 6bb/35k. 38.0% K rate. He'll be 20 in September. Castellanos went a combined 2/5 with a double and 2bb in today's DH. He is now at .353/.400/.441 in 75 PA, with 5bb/5k. He's a butcher in the field but I wonder if Pedro gets promoted to Greenville soon.

I'm at Hadlock today, watching Dedham Jimenez make his double A debut for the Sea Dogs.

Dedgar, 21, had a strong first half in Salem, but he has the build of Pablo Sandoval. Had a nice first inning (1-2-3 with 2 Ks), then lost the plate in the second, walking the first 2 hitters before escaping with a force out and a GIDP. One of the guys he walked fouled off a bunch of pitches, so Dedgar's pitch count is already in the high 30s after 2.

Portland is up 2-0, on a Chavis RBI double to straightaway CF and a Mike Olt HR to right center.

Dedgar might be done after 5. After not giving up a fly ball through 4 innings, he gave up 3 deep drives to the RF/RCF warning track. One went for a double, 2 were caught ( including one leaping catch at the wall by Portland CF Sturgeon).

Fuck yeah, Devers just bunted for a hit against the shift and we all get $2 ballpark credit! Everybody at McCoy also getting a free frosty coupon because the air gun shooting baseballs didn't work for the between innings challenge.

Don't let anyone tell you America isn't a great country.

Shoot, you were at this game? Wish I had known! Was in Section 13, third base side. Second row too, really close to the field, had some great views on Devers today.

Wendy's announcement got the biggest cheers of the day though, heh. Couldn't stand that they were asking the crowd to cheer Lucky and Dentist in pre-game ceremonies. The latter, I doubt most folks at the park get, but the former after all the ballpark rebellion is stunning. Got neither from me.

Owens with a mixed line. 5ip, 3h, 1er, 3bb/5k. 97 pitches, 53 strikes.

Chavis is currently 1/1 with 2bb. That's 5 walks in the last 2 games.

I'm starting to think it would be a huge bummer to trade Chavis. It's not like he's old for the league by any means

I love Pedro Castellanos. He's 3/4 with 2 doubles in today's game. He's now slashing .370/.422/.494 in 90 PA with 6bb/5k. 90 PA is a SSS but the bb/k numbers suggest he is seriously under matched in the GCL.

Groome is probably done for the night. Pretty wild 5.0ip, 4h, 5er, 3bb/6k, 1 HRA. 85 pitches, 50 strikes. His teammates are currently getting no hit and have only reach based once by way of HBP thru 4.

Trey Ball with an encouraging start. 6ip, 7h, 3er, 1bb/7k, 1 HRA. 82 pitches, 55 strikes. He may or may not be done yet. It is a 7 inning game today so maybe they let him go for the CG.

VIctor Acosta also seems to be finally playing up to his potential. This was a kid who hit 8 HRs as a 16 year old in the DSL in 2013. He's 1/3 with a HR tonight. Hitting pretty well for a kid who jumped from the NYPL to the Carolina league.

Ball with the CG. Final line: 7ip, 8h, 3er, 1bb/7k 96 pitches, 65 strikes. He's had a few encouraging starts scattered in with some ugly ones.
