Dude had 80 K's to 13 BB's in A ball last year in 58 innings of work. Little bit of a long ball issue, though. Only 22 years old.
Not sure I love giving up all the team control on Schreiber, but Sandlin seems like a live arm, at least.
View: https://twitter.com/rotoclegg/status/1758895800061509876?s=46Red Sox fans are gonna be thrilled getting David Sandlin. Saw him a lot in Columbia this year. Very strong arm with a big riding fastball. Can’t wait to see what the Red Sox dev can do with him. Here’s my report
probably won't matter, but this trade doesn't make any sense for KC.
- KC isn't good.
- Sandlin might be a big league starting pitcher in a few years.
- Schreiber is fine RP, but he'll be 30 in a few weeks, has had one season that would justify this trade, and it wasn't 2023.
Relievers are volatile. I’d bet on JS bouncing back this year.Schreiber had a 4.52 FIP last year, which is kind of amazing, because it suggests the Sox defense helped him last year. Kinda hard to believe the D helped any pitcher.
Looking at just numbers, I kind of feel the same way. My eye test has been telling me for two years that Schreiber was going to absolutely fall off a cliff at some point, and the numbers (FIP, etc) sort of back that up. I think a lot of people are still biting off on his weird 2022 season, which seems to be a bit of an outlier. He's also going to be 30 soon, so it isn't like we can reasonably expect him to continue getting better.@SPChrisHatfield
Gut reaction by many will be Red Sox are selling and/or cutting payroll, but getting a top 20 arm for a 6th/7th inning guy is a terrific bit of business. Schreiber was what, Sox' 5th best reliever?
A former MLB scout texted me as I was writing this to say Sox fleeced KC here.
Strangely enough, I'd actually bet on him sucking this year for the same reasons.Relievers are volatile. I’d bet on JS bouncing back this year.
Yes, in my humble opinion. It's that or it clears the way for Mata and Slaten....My takeaway is that it opens a BP spot for one of Houck and Whitlock- both of who will be better than Schreiber there…. Which creates an opening in the expected rotation…. Right?
I know this is a joke, but the reality is Schrieber will start getting expensive quick the next couple of seasona. That $1.75M will make it easier to sign Montgomery
Same thought. I anticipate Whitlock will outperform Schreiber this year as well in that 7th/8th inning role.My takeaway is that it opens a BP spot for one of Houck and Whitlock- both of who will be better than Schreiber there…. Which creates an opening in the expected rotation…. Right?
Feels like this was a way to acquire a nice pitching prospect while also clearing a 40 man spot rather than just cutting someone they like.
I expect a signing shortly
Because Schreiber has essentially been found money I have been hoping the Sox would pounce on a deal like this at some point knowing how fickle relief arms can be. I think I had argued for it two deadlines ago even.Lefties absolutely crushed Schrieber last year. I don't hate the idea of selling on him and filling the roster spot with someone with options.
Schreiber had a 4.52 FIP last year, which is kind of amazing, because it suggests the Sox defense helped him last year. Kinda hard to believe the D helped any pitcher.
That FIP probably oversells it, but he certainly wasn’t any better than his 3.86 ERA would indicate, and was probably a tick worse.Relievers are volatile. I’d bet on JS bouncing back this year.
This is exactly correct, Kiley McDaniel had Sandlin 5th (admittedly in a bad organization) when he rated a week ago, he becomes one of BOS's top 3-4 SP prospects immediately.Because Schreiber has essentially been found money I have been hoping the Sox would pounce on a deal like this at some point knowing how fickle relief arms can be. I think I had argued for it two deadlines ago even.
Schreiber will not be the difference in this team’s fortunes and the long-term goal is and should be to build the kind of pipeline of arms we have envied from afar for many years that won’t have us constantly relying on big ticket FAs and churning through crap trying to find diamonds in the rough with like 3 roster spots at a time. Use the pitching dev machine to cut your own diamonds.

That’s probably the most concise way of putting it.
The organization is starving for starting pitching talent. He built up a ton of RH reliever depth.
Using depth to address weakness is always good business. You make this move everyday of the week given what Schrieber showed last year.
This is my favorite part of the deal (Houck and or Whitlock to BP)My takeaway is that it opens a BP spot for one of Houck and Whitlock- both of who will be better than Schreiber there…. Which creates an opening in the expected rotation…. Right?
Sox Twitter is as toxic as Chernobyl at this pointTaking a moment to appreciate "actual Sox fans" in that tweet, jfc.
It does seem sort of unbelievable based on what I’ve read. But for some reason, the Royals did it.Selling off a pitcher with 3 years of control for 1 minor league pitcher. Unbelievable.
Totally. And this move is possible because of the previous moves made by Breslow that turned non controllable assets into real RH depth by adding Slaten, Campbell, and Weissert.Schreiber was worth 0.1 fWAR and is projected at 0.3 this year. He seems pretty fungible to me; frankly he’s a guy I’d often forget was on the team. His 2022 really looks like an outlier.
This is my thought exactly. These are the kinds of move I'm hoping to see from Breslow & company. If they Rays made this move my immmediate reaction would be “Man, how do they keep getting away with these moves?”
Which means I should be thrilled with it.
Turning Verdugo, Schreiber, and Urias into Fitts, Campbell, Weissert, Sandin, and Justice is really good business. Ton of pitching talent influx without much of any long term value given up.

This is some serious commitment to your narrative. Schreiber makes $1.175 million. Are you really reading this as a salary dump?Selling off a pitcher with 3 years of control for 1 minor league pitcher. Unbelievable.
Schreiber came on the scene in 2022 as a big surprise because he could throw 94 mph fastballs from a submarine arm slot. His earlier seasons with Detroit showed nothing like that velocity. In 2023 he tore the teres major in his shoulder, and lost 1-2 mph off the fastball. I think it's a reasonable bet that he won't regain it, and without 94 mph, he's just another ROOGY in a game that has devalued OOGYs by forbidding the Madden Shuffle.Schreiber was worth 0.1 fWAR and is projected at 0.3 this year. He seems pretty fungible to me; frankly he’s a guy I’d often forget was on the team. His 2022 really looks like an outlier.
And Verdugo was replaced by O'Neil, who fits better with this team and who was acquired by trading some relief pitcher depth that was pretty redundant.Totally. And this move is possible because of the previous moves made by Breslow that turned non controllable assets into real RH depth by adding Slaten, Campbell, and Weissert.
Breslow a trades should make people very bullish on his ability to be a competent CBO. They clearly have a vision and are showing aggression and conviction.
As I posted earlier. When you aggregate the three pitching moves of…
Out
Verdugo
Urias
Schrieber
In
Fitts
Slandlin
Campbell
Weissert
Judice
That’s just an incredible haul for very questionable major league assets.
Getting 2 legit starting prospects, 2 MLB proven option-able right handed relievers for 1 year of Verdugo, 1 year of Urias, and 4 years of Schrieber is just great business.
I doubt many other organizations have done was well as Breslow has from a trade perspective.
Go sign Jordan Montgomery please.
Yes, a good trade by Breslow & Co.The fact Sandlin is someone who should move quickly but doesn’t require 40 man protection this season is huge.
I never mentioned salary in anything so to bring that into this thread says a lot more about you than it does me buddy. I like Schreiber and I think he can be an asset to this team. That's all. This is some serious commitment to your narrative. Schreiber makes $1.175 million. Are you really reading this as a salary dump?
