In 2023, the FCL Sox finished 28-25, missing the playoffs. In 2024, Tom Kotchman, 69, returns for his 11th season as manager, taking over when they were called the Gulf Coast Red Sox.

The FCL Red Sox play their home games at JetBlue Park at Fenway South which opened in 2012 & boasts a capacity of 10,823. I did not find FCL attendance data, but based on information & belief, the #s were low.

For the Florida Complex League Red Sox, I'll just take the history from Wiki:

In 1988, the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners fielded a cooperative rookie-level team in the Arizona League (AZL), known as the AZL Mariners/Red Sox.[1] The cooperative was not renewed beyond that single season.

In 1989, the Red Sox began fielding their own rookie-level team in the Gulf Coast League (GCL).[1] The team first played in Winter Haven, Florida, moved to City of Palms Park in Fort Myers in 1993, then moved to its current facility in 2012. Prior to the 2021 season, the Gulf Coast League was renamed as the Florida Complex League (FCL).

Here are the way too early roster projections from SP (https://www.soxprospects.com/2024.htm):

Rotation
RHP Eybersson Polanco
RHP Gilberto Batista
RHP Wuilliams Rodriguez
RHP Obed Balderas
RHP Juan Henriquez
RHP Chansol Lee

Polanco is the only repeat from last year. He was ~ok. I'm excited to see how some of the DSL guys, including my favorites like WUILLIAMS do at the next level, & it will be interesting to see how Chansol Lee does in his 1st year in the org after signing for $300k. Wouldn't mind Van Der Schaaf & Colmenares starting, either in the FCL or in A-Ball. I think Obed will probably repeat DSL because he's so young (doesn't turn 18 until July), but if he does get assigned to the FCL that would be a really good sign.

Bullpen
Yonfi Rodriguez
Denis Reguillo
Stijn Van Der Schaaf
Cristian Nunez
Darlyn De La Cruz
Willian Colmenares
Austin Ehrlicher
Ruben De La Cruz
Alisson Del Orbe
Luis Jerez
Jose Martinez
Adam Bates

A little confused about the placement of Nunez. He wasn't good last year, but he did spend time in Salem last year, so I wouldn't really expect him to go backwards. Interested to see how Ehrlicher & Bates do in their 1st action in the system, too. & I'm also interested in what Alisson Del Orbe does as he is already an older prospect (22) after switching from being a hitter & having a dominant DSL season last year. Would hope he's in A-Ball before too long if things go well.

Inactive
RHP Alvaro Mejias

Mejias is interesting. Had a dominant age 18 season in the DSL (1.23 ERA, 2.91 xFIP, 12 k/9, 2.1 bb/9 in 8 starts, 29.1 innings), but missed all of last season except for the last game of the FCL season (which he pitched badly in). Wouldn't be surprised to see him in the rotation either. Should have a full, normal off season I would assume after making it back for the very last day.

Lineup
C Kleyver Salazar
1B Frederik Jimenez
2B Franklin Arias
3B Freili Encarnacion
SS Yoeilin Cespedes
LF Andy Lugo
CF Nelly Taylor
RF Yosander Asencio
DH Fraymi De Leon

Bench
C Andruw Musett
C Gerardo Rodriguez
IF Starlyn Nunez
IF Bryant Zayas
OF Deundre Jones
OF Kelvin Diaz
OF Cristofher Paniagua

Inactive
C Diego Viloria
C Enmanuel Martinez

C/1B - Musett, Salazar & Rodriguez were all pretty impressive in the DSL last year. They are all better prospects than Jimenez, who is also a catcher by trade. I would expect those 3 to get a lot of reps at C, 1B & DH this season, with Jimenez getting some at 1B & DH.

2B - Arias & Starlyn with a side of Yoely sounds fun, backed up by Zayas & Fraymi. I'm definitely an Arias stan & I'm not sure I've heard anyone else even talk about STARLYN. Wouldn't be shocked to see Nixson Cueche here either (or in the 1B mix).

SS - It would be excellent if Cespedes speeds right through FCL & keeps the momentum going. Will be disappointing if he doesn't get some time in Salem this year. Arias should also get plenty of time here (he's probably the guy more likely to stick at SS defensively, but it makes sense to give YOELY the run). Zayas & Fraymi also fit in here.

3B - Freili has always struck me as a tad overrated by SP. He wasn't particularly good in his DSL season (94 wRC+) & was injured & bad in his FCL season (55 wRC+ in 39 PAs), but hopefully those 2 things are connected and there are still bigger things to come. I would expect Starlyn & Fraymi to be a big part of the 3B mix, too, & Cueche if he's around.

OF - Lugo, Taylor & Asencio are all somewhat interesting, & all in different points of the development cycle (Lugo missed last year after a pretty good DSL season, Taylor was playing for Polk State, & Asencio was having a 2nd very good 2nd DSL season - 142 wRC+ followed by 154). Asencio is the one I'm most irrationally excited about, but Taylor is supposed to be a really good defender. Diaz was decent last year & could spend time in Salem this year. Not too excited about Jones or Paniagua.

Last season was my 1st really following the DSL, so far more excited than I should be to see how some of those guys progress in the FCL this season, & hopefully on to Salem in the case of some of them.

New draftees won't be hitting the FCL anymore...

For 2024, the Florida and Arizona Complex Leagues will begin and finish their seasons a month earlier than before.

Last year, the two complex leagues began on June 5 and finished on Aug. 22. This year, they will begin on May 4 and will wrap up on July 25, which means the regular season will be complete just days after the 2024 MLB draft finishes.
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/arizona-florida-complex-league-schedules-changing-for-2024/

Seems more likely people will graduate from FCL to A-Ball, though.

College draftees will now always start in low-A or higher; no more short stints in the complex league, which is probably better for the HS draftees and IFAs playing in the complex leagues. The more raw HS draftees likely will not play in official minor league games at all until the year after they are drafted; the advanced high-schoolers will probably face a tougher challenge going straight to low-A. The players that do excel in the complex leagues will likely get a longer shot in low-A after playing the full FCL season; it's now possible to have essentially a full season of games split between rookie and A-ball, which again seems like it could be good for IFAs and many HS draftees that aren't immediately ready for A-ball the first year after being drafted.

That seems … counterproductive. Or at least an admission that eliminating a layer of sub-A ball was a case of being pennywise and pound foolish.

They already moved the draft later in the year (from June to late July), most draftees don't play that first year anyway, or if they do, it's not much. I think it's all an attempt to get extra service time from players before FA, but maybe I'm missing something.

Does it change the Rule 5 rules? I thought moving the draft back was a mistake in itself because I assumed it reduced development time to 4 years and change for draftees. Do you get an extra year now?

Franklin Arias impressed scouts this spring.

Franklin Arias, SS, Red Sox

Arias signed with Boston out of Venezuela in the international signing period that opened on Jan. 15, 2023 and put forth a strong debut season in the Dominican Summer League. His arrow is pointing up this spring after a minor league camp where he showed off fluid athleticism and a swing that was both malleable up and down the zone and geared toward shooting line drives to all sectors. He’s a smooth defender at shortstop, has above-average arm strength and showed the ability to make throws on the run.

Chris Clegg did a write-up on 28 FCL guys including 3 Red Sox - Yoely, Franklin Arias & Starlyn Nunez.

I tried to excerpt those, but they seem impossible to copy & paste the ranges on my phone, so I guess I'll just post the link.

https://www.thedynastydugout.com/p/florida-complex-league-prospects-to-watch

Season starts Saturday at 10 a.m. against the FCL Twins.
I've got you-

Yoeilin Cespedes, SS, BOS, 18, 5’9”/181

Cespedes was the big name signing for the Red Sox in the 2023 international signing period, landing a $1.4 million bonus. Despite having a smaller frame, Cespedes hits the ball hard and generates easy power, collecting six home runs and 25 extra-base hits in 26 Dominican Summer League games.

The power comes naturally as Cespedes posted a 101 mph 90th percentile in 2023, which is quite an impressive mark for a 17-year-old who also saw a max of 107 mph. It showed in person as well as he hit some majestic home runs, which is impressive considering he did not turn 18 until September. He is already filled out, but it would not be uncommon to see him grow an inch or two, given his age. Obviously batting practice in a cage does not show us a ton, but the good news is we got more.

In live batting practice, Cespedes took five at-bats against Richard Fitts in which he made hard contact four of the times. There were a couple of whiffs, but every at-bat ended with the ball in play. In Cespedes’ first at-bat, he smoked one to the centerfield wall. Two other batted balls ended up in the outfield grass as well.

It was a highly impressive showing for an 18-year-old bat who has only played in the Dominican Summer League. To me, he already looks like a top-100 prospect, given what I saw and his Dominican Summer League performance.

An aggressive hitter, Cespedes jumps on pitches early in counts and shows strong pitch recognition. The contact will be the question mark as well as his future defensive home, but I am incredibly excited about what Cespedes might do in
Franklin Arias, SS, BOS, 18, 5’11”/170

Arias was one of the more impressive standouts in Red Sox camp this spring as an athletic shortstop who is filling out and adding to his frame. Last summer in the Dominican Summer League, Arias slashed an impressive .350/.440/.453 with just one home run but had 11 extra-base hits in 37 games. He walked more than he struck out as well.

In the spring, Arias did seem to be more tapping into a little more power so that will be something I am watching closely because the feel to hit is very good.
Starlyn Nunez, 3B, BOS, 18, 6’0”/155

Nunez was an extra-base hit machine in the DSL last summer, collecting 12 doubles, three triples, and four home runs in 49 games. The bat-to-ball skills were solid as Nunez struck out just 13 percent of the time and posted a .325/.391/.479 slash.

The switch hitter has an explosive swing from the left side and gets to power pretty easily. There are questions surrounding his glove, but the bat will play. Nunez could see his stock soar with a strong performance at the complex.

I've got you-
Thank you kind sir.

Here's the current SoxProspects roster stuff for the FCL Sox:

Lineup
C Kleyver Salazar
1B Frederik Jimenez
2B Franklin Arias
3B Starlyn Nunez
SS Yoeilin Cespedes
LF Franyer Noria
CF Yosander Asencio
RF Kelvin Diaz
DH Mikey Romero

Bench
C Andruw Musett
C Gerardo Rodriguez
1B Armando Sierra
IF Yohander Linarez
OF Karim Ayubi
OF Raimundo De Los Santos

I think we'll see a lot more of Musett & GRod than Jimenez.

Also hoping for more Raimundo than Noria, but that's probably just a me thing.

Rotation
RH Yordanny Monegro
RH Nicholas Judice
RH Gilberto Batista
RH Obed Balderas
RH Chansol Lee
RH Cristian Nunez
RH Eybersson Polanco

Hoping YORDANNY gets the opening day start, pitches 5 perfect innings & gets promoted straight to Woosta.

Except to see GBats & The Chansoller.

Bullpen
RH CJ Liu
RH Denis Reguillo
RH Yonfi Rodriguez
RH Stijn Van Der Schaaf
RH Willian Colmenares
RH Adam Bates
RH Diego Hernandez
RH Deybi Salcedo
RH Juan Valera
RH Yeferson Vargas
RH Ovis Portes
RH Jesus Garcia
RH Wuilliams Rodriguez
RH Cristofer Soriano
RH Luis Jerez

Of this group I'm most interested in WUILLIAMS, The Savior, Diego Portes & Deybi, but there are lots of guys here who could pop.

Hard to believe he's an 18 yo SS - in the pic, he looks more like a tight end.

'Course, in the picture, you can't tell he's 5'8", either.

YOELY

9. Yoeilin Cespedes, SS, FCL Red Sox (No. 7)
One of the more advanced hitters in the 2023 international class, Cespedes turned pro for $1.4 million out of the Dominican Republic in January 2023. He won Red Sox Latin program player of the year honors following a .346/.392/.560 debut in the DSL, where he impressed with his advanced approach, bat-to-ball skills, exit velocities, baseball IQ and work ethic.
