I am a bit concerned about the future of these threads with Twitter X doing whatever it is it's doing. Most of the Tweets (X'es) I posted yesterday aren't currently showing up.

But for now, we soldier on. I'll write a little bio on Rio Gomez a bit later (hence the title).

Rio Gomez was born October 20, 1994 in Miami, Florida. He is the son of late ESPN reporter Pedro Gomez & his mother Sandi. He is 1 of 3 children.

He grew up in Phoenix & was cut from the varsity baseball team at Desert Vista High his senior year.

He went to Mesa Community College & walked on to the baseball team. He pitched all of 1/3 of an inning & allowed a run.

He then transferred to the University of Arizona where he walked on to the baseball team & immediately found great success, allowing 2 runs in 21 innings for an 0.86 ERA.

Things got less smooth over the next couple seasons for the lefty (4.32 & 4.82 ERA), but in 2017, he became the Red Sox 36th round pick & received a $10k signing bonus.

From that draft, 1st rounder Tanner Houck & 16th rounder Kutter Crawford are currently a big part of the Red Sox pitching staff.

The only other players still in the organization are 7th rounder Tyler Esplin (AA), 14th rounder Aaron Perry (A+), 18th rounder Dominic LoBrutto (who hasn't pitched since '21 due to injury), & 29th rounder Tyler Dearden (AA). All could be described as organizational filler.

In 2017, Gomez reported to the Rooke League Gulf Coast Red Sox where he put up a 1.98 ERA in 27.1 innings before being promoted to the low-A Lowell Spinners where he put up a 9 ERA in 5 innings.

In 2018, Gomez returned to Lowell where he put up a 1.65 ERA in 27.1 innings before being promoted to our then A-Ball affiliate, Greenville, where he recorded a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings.

In 2019, Gomez dominated at Greenville with a 1.09 ERA in 24.2 innings before being promoted to our then high-A affiliate, Salem, where he recorded a 2.80 ERA in 45 innings.

2020 was a lost year. He lost his father, the famed baseball reporter who covered 25 World Series and 22 All Star Games, to a heart attack in February 2021 at the age of 58.

By 2021, Greenville was the high-A affiliate, & that's where Gomez started his season, recording a 4.70 ERA in 7.2 innings before being promoted to AA Portland, where he had a 3.43 ERA in 39.1 innings.

In 2022, Rio missed the 1st 7 weeks of the season with myocarditis, a condition that may have continued to impact him during the season. For the first time in his Red Sox career, he did not move up during a season, & ended up with a 6.55 ERA in 33 innings.

Prior to the 2023 season, Gomez participated in the WBC for his mother's home country, Colombia (his father's parents emigrated from Cuba, 20 days before Pedro was born & 2 months before the Cuban missile crisis). He pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief against Canada.

In 2023, Rio started the year in Portland where he had a 6.41 ERA in 19.1 innings, but was promoted to Worcester anyway. To this point in his career, Gomez had been almost exclusively a relief pitcher - starting only 5 professional games.

However, Worcester has been having a lot of turnover in their rotation, & as a result, Gomez has started in 8 of his 11 games with Worcester this season. In 37 innings, Gomez has a 3.89 ERA.

Rio has been even better lately. In his last 5 games he has pitched 13 innings, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits with 7 walks & 16 strikeouts (2.08 ERA).

The 6' lefty who throws from a 3/4 arm slot has a fastball that tops out around 90 and sinks, a 1-7 slider, & a deceptive changeup.

We will see what the future holds for the 28 y/o. Hopefully he pitches well after all this :)

I guess I'll have to do the thing where I write out Tweets just in case...

SS THE BLIZZARD
DH Enmy
LF Abreu
RF Bobby D
C Scott
3B Fitzy
2B Arroyo
1B Niko
CF Zimmer

SP Rio

I feel like an Arroyo (dry stream) & a Rio (river) may have trouble working in the same direction, but we shall see.

It seems like you can click through to the links, but they don't preview. I assume this is part of Elon's master plan to make my life more difficult.

It should be an easy enough fix on my part, but let's give it a few days.

Wilyer hit another bomb, 18 for the year.

Wikelman 5k through 2.

Edit: Was cruising through the 3rd striking out the first two and had the 3rd down 0-2 but eventually walked him, then a SB and single brings him home. Regardless, have to love the results in AA so far.

Portland is down 3-1 after 4. Their 1 run came on a Lugo single & Marrero double.

Wikelman got the 1st 2 out in the 5th & got ahead 0-2 before running the count full & allowing a double. Looks like he still has a bit of work to do on closing out at bats... despite the really high # of strikeouts. He got the next guy, though.

Marcelo update this morning, hopefully back within a week to 10 days.

Part of the problem likely was left shoulder inflammation that landed him on the injured list Aug. 3. Mayer attempted to play through the soreness but decided he couldn’t push through much longer. After eight days of rest in addition to dry needle work to reduce inflammation, Mayer is starting to ramp back up and could return to the field for Portland in the next week or 10 days.
“Obviously, he tried to play through and it wasn’t working,” Portland manager Chad Epperson told The Athletic. “I think he came to the realization, ‘I need help with this.’ He’s getting that help and feeling better every day. They’re doing some needle treatments, and the next day after those, you’re really sore, so you’re taking a couple steps forward and one step back, but he is progressing.”

Wilyer heard you talking mess about him that one time

I’m very intrigued by the back of the card description of the player: avg to above power, some plate discipline, and athleticism and arm to play either outfield corner.

I’d love more definitive descriptions on his approach and defense, but he seems like a good platoon/rotational guy.

Can Wilyer give you most of a Verdugo season at 1/5 if the cost? That’s a reason to look to make a deal, or does another team see Wilyer as a low-cost regular?

Not sure if I have actually besmirched Abreu or whether you're memeing. But my apologies to the Abreu family just in case.

It's hard to say how any non-elite prospect will transition to the pros. He has had fairly low averages throughout his Minor League career (.256 in 1755 PAs including .262 this season), but is patient & walks regularly (52 walks, 71 strikeouts).

He definitely can hit the ball hard, but it seems the problem is that he doesn't do it on a consistent enough basis. He has 18 home runs now... but only 9 doubles on the season, which is certainly unusual.

He would cost like $750k, so it would be like less than 10% of the cost... but I don't have a great feel for what % of the production you would get.

MLB Spoiler

Red Sox win 6-3 over the Tigers

Crawford started & pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 1 walk & 2 strikeouts.

Bernardino came in for the last out of the 5th.

Whitlock pitched 2 innings in his 1st game back, 0 earned runs, 0 hits, 0 walks & 3 strikeouts, but allowed an unearned run with the help of some sketchy Pablo Reyes fielding.

Martin pitched a scoreless 8th...despite allowing 2 doubles & a single, with a huge assist from that Urías tag. He got his 20th hold.

Kenley pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing 1 hit. He got his 27th save.

Story was 4-4 with 3 doubles & 2 steals.

Duvall was 2-4 with a homer.

Turner was 2-5 with a homer.
