Why has catcher interference seemed to become a more frequent occurrence? Are hitters cheating the back of the batters box more or are catcher reaching out more?
Maybe as part of trying to execute framing the C's are reaching out a bit more?
I googled around a bit and found this article. The author documents that catcher interference is on the rise, and attributes it to a combination of catchers setting up closer to aid in framing, launch angle swings being more conducive to interference, and hitters swinging at pitches deeper in the zone.I think catchers are going to the ball more in an attempt to help frame the pitch for a strike. Then you have the players moving in the box depending what type of pitcher they're facing. Primarily a FB/sinker pitcher back in the box. Braking ball more forward in the box.

He's hitting .139 this year against righties. Maybe the five hits he has had were key.I am not going to be able to prove this, but lately this year Reffy has had some important hits against rhp. Not tonight, though.
