The Pats could always use better players at a number of positions. There's still room on the roster to add quality draftees in a number of spots. But the team is going nowhere with Cam as the QB, when all is said and done. I *have* to believe that BB believes this. So that means that he *has* to get a better QB, somehow. Be it through a trade for JG - who, I get, some here won't think is much of an upgrade, but, yeah he is, even if he might not be enough of one, or drafting a QB and letting Cam be a bridge to the next guy.
Given their situation - financially, roster-wise, etc. - I really believe everything is lined up for Bill to take his shot. Either trade for JG and add other quality pieces so JG has the best roster possible to contend with - which I think would mean the 2021 Pats would be really really good - or do what you have to do to draft the QB you want and let Cam be a one year or half-year bridge to the next guy. This second route may mean fewer wins in 2021 but it would be a better setup long-term. That is, if the drafted QB is actually any good, which as we all know, may not be the case.
But now is the time to strike. Now is the time to roll the dice and make the play. They've never been better suited for it than now. Not quite a Super Bowl contender so you don't HAVE to play for THIS year, but they COULD if they wanted to. They're just well-positioned to make this bold move.
