It's being renovated. Are they playing at the old Key Arena? Unless it has been renovated substantially, and I am hoping it has been renovated, that would be terrible. It has the same problem the Barclay's Center had for the Islanders. The rink doesn't fit in the seating bowl.

And I'm sure it's being done with zero affect on the climateIt's being renovated.
The only thing being preserved is the roof since it's on the historic register. They gutted it and it's a new arena inside. Dug down 15' for more space too. SkyscraperCity has a big thread covering it: https://www.skyscrapercity.com/threads/seattle-climate-pledge-arena-18-350.1274329/It's being renovated.
It's right near my office and I've walked by several times. Unless you knew it was being renovated, you'd have no idea. I think the Kraken is a specific fictional sea monster, not a fictional species of sea monsters. Sort of like Pegasus.I'll bite:
Why is it singular? The kraken is a mythical beast/D&D monster that is basically a supersized (and much more intelligent) giant squid. It's not, as far as I'm aware, also a pluralized term. So shouldn't it be KrakenS?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KrakenKraken were extensively described by Erik Pontoppidan, bishop of Bergen, in his Det første Forsøg paa Norges naturlige Historie "The First Attempt at [a] Natural History of Norway" (Copenhagen, 1752).
That's good. I went to a Seattle Thunderbirds game there (years ago) and it was a bad place to watch a game. Hopefully the new arena will be kraken!Yeah, it's like a $900M renovation project been going on for a couple of years
Well, I learned something today. Interesting.I think the Kraken is a specific fictional sea monster, not a fictional species of sea monsters. Sort of like Pegasus.
Edit: I take it back, maybe Kraken is the plural. At least that's how Wikipedia seems to be using it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraken
Kraken and krakens are both acceptable plurals in English. It's traditionally a monstrous whale or fish, or crab/fish hybrid; the idea of it being octopus or squid-like only is a fairly recent re-imagining (c. late 18th century) with no basis in the original mythology.I'll bite:

Got the Kraken tentacle in the S logo too. Pretty cool.
The logo animation with the negative tentacle, sinister red eye, and "frosted" shadowing of the 'S' is totally badass. That red-eye suggesting a lurking monster is a nice touch
Um... the kraken in Clash of the Titans looks NOTHING like the kraken from D&D. The kraken from Clash was a semi-humanoid monster and the kraken, at least from what I remember of the books I used to have/see when I played, was a massive, intelligent, evil giant squid. I can see that a recent update of the creature does look a little more like the Clash kraken than it ever did but that's a recent change. Even the description in the Wiki page describes it as such (though the picture has been updated).Kraken and krakens are both acceptable plurals in English. (The kraken was only added to D&D in later expansions in 1st Edition, from 1983—almost certainly because of the popularity it gained following the 1981 Clash of the Titans, as it draws its appearance and abilities directly from the movie version)
They had a new ownership group (led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen) who was negotiating with the city (sometimes less than successfully) to build a new arena down next to the Mariners' park. Even had the land mostly acquired and stadium designs going. When Stern rejected any expansion, Hansen went and reached an agreement with the Maloof family to buy+relocate the Kings. But, in stark contrast to the express ticket Clay Bennet received to whisk away the Sonics to OKC, the relocation committee unanimously voted against the move. The Board of Governors then rejected Hansen's bid, and Balmer's group ultimately ended up owning the Kings on condition the team stayed in Sacramento. Hansen's negotiations with Seattle's City Council basically imploded after that, and a rival plan to renovate Key Arena to lure in new teams ultimately led to the new hockey franchise.Somewhat related: Where is the NBA right now on getting the Sonics back in Seattle? The league has easily enough talent to support expansion and it can't be that hard to find an owner looking to make a bid? With a new arena being built it shouldn't be that hard, should it? They would easily become my west coast cheat team.

Just a minor correction..Balmer owns the Clippers right? I think the Kings are owned by that investor from India whose name I forget at the moment. The Kings owner used to hold a minority share in the Warriors. They had a new ownership group (led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen) who was negotiating with the city (sometimes less than successfully) to build a new arena down next to the Mariners' park. Unlike Stern, Silver has played footsie with the idea of expansion, but at a nebulous future date.
The moment nerds and hockey collided. This is what comes to mind when I think Kraken.

Looking forward to seeing how the franchise unfolds.
Yep my mistake. Fast posting from my phone, got NBA's game of thrones a bit mixed in my head. Thanks for the correction.Just a minor correction..Balmer owns the Clippers right? Yes you're correct Vivek Ranadive runs the Kings.Just a minor correction..Balmer owns the Clippers right? I think the Kings are owned by that investor from India whose name I forget at the moment. The Kings owner used to hold a minority share in the Warriors.
I know this was a joke, but the Athletic had a kinda cool article about the fishermen. They were a dad and his two kids and they didn't even know what they were a part of. Someone called them and asked if they could rent his boat for a photo shoot; he said yes expecting people to show up to take pictures of the shoreline and the film crew showed up. He knew it was the team, but not what it was for until it was released. Seattle did a really great job of keeping this under wraps.Ah, I didn't watch the video.
EDIT: I see now that salmon/green on the fishermen was a red herring.
The name is awesome, as are the sweaters; I don't love the font they used for the letterhead logo, but it's fine for what it is; it just strikes me as minor league baseball style.Scott Kimmel was having another afternoon on the water when someone reached out to him about potentially using his commercial fishing boat for a photoshoot.
Kimmel, a third-generation fisherman from Port Townsend, Wash., said he was more than happy to make his vessel available. At first, he thought it was going to be a camera crew coming out to take a few photographs along with some videoclips for an advertising campaign. Little did Kimmel know that he and his children, Jackson and Ellie, were actually going to be the stars of the production.
“They were secretive with what the whole thing was about,” Kimmel said. “We did not know the whole thing was going out until yesterday.”
Exactly who was this mystery client? It was NHL Seattle — sorry — the Seattle Kraken. But, at the time, the club was just NHL Seattle. Kimmel knew who they were but what they were doing was kept under wraps. At least until Wednesday when the team used a minute-long video starring the Kimmel family to announce it would be revealing its name to the world Thursday morning.
How long will the drive be for you?The Rangers are still my team, but I think I finally have a local team I can root for.
We're just outside of Spokane, so around four hours. At most I think we'd be looking at one game a season. My wife has family on the west side, so I don't like to go over the mountains too often. How long will the drive be for you?
They better name the mascot Phil. Even better if you make him Irish.Great name, solid logo. Hope the mascot is equally good. As mentioned in the ESPN piece on picking the name, while it wasn't universally the favorite it had the most enthusiasm both in the market and out. Not many people outside western WA would give enough of a shit about the Seattle team to buy a sweater, but people are going to buy Kraken gear just because it's Kraken gear.
That's your loss, you missed out on a lot of awesome hockey in the past 15 years. How long will the drive be for you?
I have season tickets and have been wondering if I'll be rooting for the Bruins or the Kraken. I haven't really paid much attention to Boston hockey since moving out here, and my last visit to the old Garden was in 1989, so I can see myself rooting for the Seattle team, even against the Bruins.
It was three time zones away from me, and as a Florida boy, I knew very little about hockey. I didn’t keep up with the Celtics or the Pats, either. I worked very long hours my first 8 years out here. That's your loss, you missed out on a lot of awesome hockey in the past 15 years.
Excellent pull. This is what comes to mind when I think Kraken.

I've been spending too much time in V&N so when I first scrolled by this thread I though it said 'Release the Karen' or something like that.. which seemed terrifying.
Which game was this screenshot for , out of curiosity?
The Bruins, in Feb.Which game was this screenshot for , out of curiosity?
Direct! Those aren't re-sale prices! And is that direct from team or resale?
That fee is fucking unfathomable. The whole thing is completely absurd but a $53.00 fee for anything is the biggest pile of horseshit.
