If I looked at the Tyree catch as many times and in as much detail as this one, I could make a comparison. But even now I've only seen the whole thing once, in real time, and I aint goin' back.
Juxtaposed with the Atlanta defender (Alford?) gaping in disbelief at the jumbotron it was an exquisite sequence. And lest we forget, the "Kyle Van Noy" face on the sidelines after he watched the replay on the big screen. Just pure astonishment.
I like it the nickname-less way it is.The only thing this catch is missing is a nickname.
It's the catch that made you forget about the Julio Jones catch. The only thing this catch is missing is a nickname.
Yup. Jules totally robbed Julio of his iconic SB moment. That would eat me alive as a player. It's the catch that made you forget about the Julio Jones catch.
I'll be damned. Since that game, I still close my eyes on replays, so have never rewatched it but I always thought it was fourth down which made it sting that much more. Eli definitely lucks into another throw if that catch doesn't happen.Yeah, Tyree was on 3rd and 5. They probably would have converted anyways.
Im calling bullshit on this.If I looked at the Tyree catch as many times and in as much detail as this one, I could make a comparison. But even now I've only seen the whole thing once, in real time, and I aint goin' back.
I can't say I've seen video footage of that catch much. I've seen a lot of stills of it though.Im calling bullshit on this.
Call me pedantic, but at the very least you watched the replay after it happened, even just to see if he caught it. Beyond that I find it hard to believe you have somehow avoided every replay over the last nine years that pops up randomly in games or on sportscenter.
Nope, that's why I said I've seen "the whole thing" only once. I manage to close my eyes whenever it comes on. I've seen the first few seconds a ton. Tho admittedly I don't remember if I watched replays at the time.Im calling bullshit on this.

What seems clear to me after viewing #280 is: Alford has no chance at the INT and isn't really going for the ball, but rather for the tap. But: if Edelman doesn't immediately adjust his trajectory and dive for the ball, it's most likely caught by Neal, who's diving for the deflection. Edelman wedges his body between the ball and Neal to save the game. The fact that he then caught the damn thing is gravy...Well, Alford thinks you are right:
If Bucker is ok, why isn't the Tyree catch ok now? The Pats have won 2 of the last 3 super bowls. Brady and Belichick are the best ever. They have exorcised the demons, even if they never got that 19-0 season.Nope, that's why I said I've seen "the whole thing" only once. I manage to close my eyes whenever it comes on. I used to do the same for the Buckner play but now that's OK.
I'm with ya. I can watch it now. I have even talked myself into the fact that I attended an historic Super Bowl, instead of the nut punch it was, because 49 and now 51 bump it from most historic. If Bucker is ok, why isn't the Tyree catch ok now? Maybe at some point, but the chance at history and shutting up the Dolphins forever will always make that play worse than Buckner in my book. 2004 and two more titles erased the sting of 1986 but perfection is a different story. If Bucker is ok, why isn't the Tyree catch ok now? The Pats have won 2 of the last 3 super bowls. Brady and Belichick are the best ever. They have exorcised the demons, even if they never got that 19-0 season.
Could not agree moreI was saying after the game that 2 years ago gave me closure/relief on 2012. This year gave me closure/relief on 2007. Obviously they still hurt - but the pain of those are dwarfed by the joy of these two now.
I like the closure/relief on 2007 angle a lot. 2014, to me, was its own thing (the Butler pick gave closure/relief from the Kearse catch). Still waiting for closure/relief for 2012... maybe we can get it next year, with Julian hanging on to a difficult but catchable ball.I was saying after the game that 2 years ago gave me closure/relief on 2012. It's not a perfect analogy, but it's kinda where I'm at I think.
It's pretty close to perfect. The extra juice associated with the FU Goodell makes up for the loss of what should have been a truly perfect season.I was saying after the game that 2 years ago gave me closure/relief on 2012. I guess I think about it this way. 2014 gave us the 4th title they needed to validate that the first 3 weren't a fluke of that era's team. Gave Brady his 4th, BB his 4th, kinda put them solidly into GOAT status but it wasn't cut and dry and certainly could be debated. And it did in a pure elation type way that gave us a moment of pure joy. Thats what I felt they missed in 2012, a chance to solidify their overall legacy. 2014 gave them that.I like the closure/relief on 2007 angle a lot. 2014, to me, was its own thing (the Butler pick gave closure/relief from the Kearse catch). where was Lynn Swann's catch? That to me...is #1.NFLN just did their opinion of the top 10 SB catches of all time and made Julian's #2.
OK, 4 were vs. the Pats (you can guess). #1 was Big Ben to Santonio Holmes to win SB 43. They did include all Super Bowls as Max McGee's TD from Starr was included.
How about, makes up for 2006? The AFCCG in Indy might have been the most similar game in playoff history and the Pats came out on the other end of it, costing themselves a near-certain title in the process.I like the closure/relief on 2007 angle a lot.
The absolute best part of this sequence - and I mean the marrow of it - is when JE11 says "I caught it" and the Falcons Poole, pointing at one monitor, says "No way, look here" and Edelman does the exact same thing ("watch") at the other monitor. We know who won that argument. The same guy that was part of the team that won the game. Fucking brilliant.A little bit of what we will see tomorrow on SoundFX
#4. They actually used 3 of his great catches from SB X and XIII. The video is available on line if you search for "nfl network top 10 super bowl catches".where was Lynn Swann's catch? That to me...is #1.
This video makes me realize that for all the focus on Edelman's hand speed at the end of the catch, he starts it by making a mid-air adjustment after the tip to get in position to spring back forward, that is some literal Matrix shit. The absolute best part of this sequence - and I mean the marrow of it - is when JE11 says "I caught it" and the Falcons Poole, pointing at one monitor, says "No way, look here" and Edelman does the exact same thing ("watch") at the other monitor. As a side note, is there any doubt that Edelman is the Patriots Millar?
Right there with you; I've seen that catch once, which is more than enough. If I looked at the Tyree catch as many times and in as much detail as this one, I could make a comparison. But even now I've only seen the whole thing once, in real time, and I aint goin' back.
Pics? And lest we forget, the "Kyle Van Noy" face on the sidelines after he watched the replay on the big screen. Just pure astonishment.
I always remembered it as 4th down as well. When Eli was almost sacked, I was thinking, "That's game!" Then I saw he was still on his feet and then throwing it. I was going, "no,no no" and then that catch. All these years I thought if only Rodney had knocked it loose, we would have won. So they actually had one more shot and could have potentially gotten a first down anyway, though maybe not as close.I'll be damned. Since that game, I still close my eyes on replays, so have never rewatched it but I always thought it was fourth down which made it sting that much more. Eli definitely lucks into another throw if that catch doesn't happen.

This year was all about history. Instead of cementing the undisputed greatest season ever, they cemented the undisputed greatest careers ever. Greatest QB ever. Greatest coach ever. Greatest comeback ever. They now have their rightful place in history as the all time greatest and it's completely without debate. That's what was denied them in 2007, and now they have it on an even grander scale.
I'm officially at peace with 2007.
I would agree with this 100% if the 4th down defensive holding call late in the game in Baltimore in 2007 hadn't been called and the Pats had come to that SB with one loss. But losing a chance at perfection is something I think I'll never get over.I think this is right.
Like, when it was 3 wins and then the next two trips were losses... there was a kind of uneasiness, a sense of either decline or coming up short of potential.
Now those losses are just hiccups--Hey, can't win'em all, right?
It was Rex calling timeout that really screwed Baltimore.I would agree with this 100% if the 4th down defensive holding call late in the game in Baltimore in 2007 hadn't been called and the Pats had come to that SB with one loss. Why is there no more chance? They were very close this year.I would agree with this 100% if the 4th down defensive holding call late in the game in Baltimore in 2007 hadn't been called and the Pats had come to that SB with one loss. It's like watching a weasel steal an egg from a Falcon's nest. The only thing this catch is missing is a nickname.
There is. But obviously it is exceedingly difficult. Why is there no more chance? They were very close this year.
I'm pretty sure his point is that it's not rational.Asante Samuel was no worse than the third best player on defense that year, after Vrabel and arguably Wilfork. He had an AV of 15, with 6 INT that year and 10 (!) the previous year. The guy played his balls off for us. Do you loathe Welker too, cause, you know, he dropped that ball? Or Jon Lester, because he couldn't finish off the comeback in the 2008 ALCS? Just seems like a weird target to loathe.
I totally agree. It's easy to forget that play was on first down, and we had PLENTY of time. I think it's very likely we score on that drive even if that ball hit the ground.I think in terms of sheer improbability, the Edelman catch is crazier than any of the others. But within game context (importance to eventual outcome, etc) the Tyree catch was bigger.
I don't really care that much where that puts it in terms of "greatest"... it's my favorite.
