It's approaching malpractice that Tuchel sat him for the first half against Monaco. They were just a completely different team going forward with him on the field. With the Bundesliga title out of reach and UCL qualification fairly well secured, that was the match to play his absolute best 11 rather than resting anyone. There can't be much doubt at this point that CP is or ought to be in that first-choice lineup.

Matt Miazga returned from injury in time to start in the Dutch Cup final against AZ. Vitesse won 2-0, which earned them their first-ever piece of silverware.

I watched a decent amount of Bobby Wood's game against Augsburg on FS1 this morning. Hamburg has played in two straight relegation playoffs and looks destined for a third, although they've never been relegated from the Bundesliga. Wood didn't do much, but I can't remember him ever getting the ball in a good position. He needs better teammates.

Healthy Bobby Wood is two things: a hothead, and fucking awesome at creating opportunities for himself given even a modicum of support.

Neither Augsburg nor Hamburg are good teams - ordinarily, against a defense that isn't as stifling as, say, Frankfurt or Hertha, you'd expect a few chances for him.

And Brugge win 3 - 1 so good for Horvath on that score, but apparently the 1 goal was a real howler where Horvath put the ball down thinking it was a stoppage of play and the striker just then kicked the ball into his empty net.

Yeah, that wasn't ideal.

Reports in the Belgian press prior to the game indicated that Brugge's starter Ludovic Butelle had struggled in recent weeks and it looked like Horvath had a good chance to be the starter next season. There are three more games this season, so we'll see how Brugge handles Horvath's mental error.

Schalke wouldn't release their American U20s because they are playing for the U19 Bundesliga title. At least they are doing well: Schalke won @ Bayern in the first leg of the semifinal 3-1. Nick Taitague won a penalty for Schalke's second goal and then assisted Haji Wright on the third. Weston McKennie started in CM.

https://www.derwesten.de/sport/fussball/s04/unter-den-augen-von-mario-goetze-schalkes-u19-schlaegt-den-fc-bayern-traumfinale-gegen-den-bvb-rueckt-naeher-id210528499.html

Garbled Google Translate:

Schalke also benefited from the yellow and red card of Munich's Maxime Awoudja (59), who made two tough fouls within seven minutes. The guests accepted the gift immediately. The outstanding Haji Wright scored the impressive 3: 1 final (63).

The strong performance of the Schalke players in the semifinals first leg brought the opponent into raptures. Bayern-President Uli Hoeneß analyzed an interview with Sport1: "Schalke was clearly the better team and had the outstanding man on the pitch in Haji Wright. Defeat is all right."

Uli Hoeness name check!

Goal here:

In the other semifinal, McKinze Gaines started for Wolfsburg in a 3-2 home loss to Dortmund. Will "courtesy signing" Pulisic was on the bench for BVB; he's off to Duke after his one-year adventure in Germany.

Who would you sit in his favour?
There´s possibly Kagawa (much more experienced), and maybe Dembele if he also needs a break, but other than that? Auba, Reus, Weigl, Guerreiro are above him or play other positions. I think atm even Dembele is in a better form. Not much to criticize here.
He´s 18 and can play youth football, there´s nothing wrong with sitting on the bench of a top european team. They need each point.

It's also Pulisic's first full year as a first teamer. He has played quite a bit for an 18 year old on a CL club with a busy schedule. BVB won't want to run him into the ground physically and/or mentally.

He was starting over Reus (or Kagawa) for a long time. But he has done a fair amount of starting recently, and except the Hoffenheim match has appeared in every BVB game. Since Mar 1st, he has 7 starts and 8 substitute appearances.

Dembele is 19, and has 11 starts and 4 sub appearances in that time.
Emre Mor, 19, I think was injured between december and march, but since returning has 1 start and 4 subs.
Passlack is 18, has 1 start and 2 sub appearances in that time.

I'd say among Die Kinder, Pulisic is only behind Dembele on the depth chart, which is fair. And I think "resting" is a reasonable conclusion: He played 90 at Gladbach on 4/22, then 4 days later came in for 30 crucial minutes at Bayern in the DFB-Pokal semi but didn't start. He played 90 against Cologne on 4/29, then sat the next week 5/6 at Hoffenheim. What was surprising was him only coming on for 11 minutes at Augsburg today, rather than starting. But he's got his work in this year.

Your overall assessment of Pulisic is good and fair, except the part related to Reus.

He was starting over Reus (or Kagawa) for a long time.
He started instead of Reus, who was out for months with an injury. The entire season he started one match where Reus sat on the bench. (It was 2-0 Real when Reus and Mor came in for Pulisic and Schürrle after an hour and it ended 2-2.)
He started matches over Kagawa, that´s true, but winger isn´t Kagawa´s #1 position, as it is Pulisic´ right now.

Ethan Horvath got the start for Club Brugge again and apparently did better this time - he made several saves on top of stopping a penalty in a draw against Anderlecht.

Joe Corona, who has revitalized his Xolos career this season, has assisted for Tijuana in their quarterfinal second leg against Morelia.

I thought both Danny Williams and Tim Ream had strong games Saturday in the Championshp playoff. Ream has actually been very good for Fulham this year.

Williams is coming to the end of his contract with Reading. The club has begun talking with him about an extension but I'm unsure if he'll take it if they don't go up as he's been frozen out of the USMNT playing at the Championship level and to be honest I don't know if Reading will want to sign him if they do go up. He is the club's best Box to Box midfielder and 4th longest serving player at the club, but they might feel they need someone with Prem experience in that all action/enforcer role.

The semifinal in the U19 for the german title is under way.
1st leg Bayern-Schalke 1-3.
It was Schalke-Bayern 1-3 with 15 to play. Haji Wright with a nice assist from the wing on Schalke´s 2-3.
10minutes to play.

Edit: Taitague had a few nice offensive moves on the wing.

Edit: Ends 4-2 and now penalties after 90min, there´s no away goals rule.
Haji Wright scores a cool penalty (he had to, else they were gone) to tie it to 4-4. Then Bayern´s 5th shooter hits the crossbar, ball bounces back, hits the grass and Schalke´s keeper to make it 5-4 Bayern. The twist: Schalke´s 2nd shooter also hit the crossbar, the grass and the keeper, but the ball twisted slowly back towards the goal and the keeper could save it for the only save of the penalties. Very lucky for BAYERN to make it a final of Bayern-Dortmund.

Schalke has nothing to play for this weekend, so a possible Bundesliga debut for one of them? I perceive McKennie to be the closest to first team playing time.

FWIW, Brian Sciaretta believes McKennie will be on Schalke's first team next year.
There are definitely indications that Schalke really likes him. I am not as confident that Haji Wright is ready for prime time, although he was prolific for the U19s this year. I would not be shocked to see him play for Schalke II next year or go out on loan. He has clearly made strides, but from what I've read still needs to make improvements off the ball and he needs to make better use of his size. Nick Taitague will definitely stay with Schalke U19 for 2017-18, as he's a year younger than the other two.

Some other things:
  • There's a report that Matt Miazga will go on loan next season (to no one's surprise), but not to Vitesse. There's loose talk of interest from Feyenoord and PSV, though he may end up in a bigger league if a club steps up to the plate. Choose wisely, Matt.
  • Right back Desevio Payne has moved from Groningen to Excelsior on a free. This was largely a lost season for Payne; first he was injured, then he fell out of favor with the manager. I will be disappointed if he doesn't build on his quality showing with the last U20 cycle.
  • On Tuesday, Lynden Gooch made his first EPL appearance since November. Hopefully he'll find a bit more playing time with Sunderland down in the Championship next year.
  • Jonathan Amon, an 18 year old winger from South Carolina, has signed with FC Nordsjælland in Denmark.
  • 17 year old German-American right back Corey Anton is moving from Kaiserslautern to Hoffenheim. @Schnerres, do you know anything about this kid?

Not really.
He was born in Bad Kreuznach, which is close to Kaiserslautern. He was recently called up to the german U18, not to the real roster, but to stay alert if somebody gets injured. He was in the younger (99) age class in this years U19 and it basically took half a season to really get the starting job as it seems when i checked FCKs match stats. But obviously he had great matches, else he wouldn´t have been on DFBs call-up-list.

The problem with FCKs U19 team: some guys from this year´s great team will step up to the senior team and some will stay in U19, but already got their pro contracts. Some of the youngsters (maybe like Anton) may not like that they weren´t offered pro contracts, but you cannot offer such a contract to half the team, as many of them will flame out and just won´t make it.

On the subject of Yanks on loan from EPL clubs, Emerson Hyndman is apparently in Bournemouth's plans for next year, putting to rest speculation that he'd end up on a longer term loan or transfer to Rangers or Celtic, who had been rumored to be interested. I'm excited to see what a healthy Hyndman can do. Interesting year for him in that he came out of the summer with a lot of momentum and then got injured at precisely the wrong time in the pre-season, resulting in his loan to Rangers. Had a strong rookie campaign in the SPL this year with 4 goals and 4 assists in (I think) 20 games and what appears to be generally strong performance/reviews (selected as the team's Young Player of the Year for example).

I think there's no question he gets called in for some Gold Cup games if he is healthy (he is recovering from a foot injury that ended his SPL season early) to see what he can do at the intl level. It will be interesting to see how he could fit into the increasingly crowded mix in midfield.

I'm torn between wanting him at the Gold Cup because that might well be his best shot to really embed into the American setup for 2018 and kinda wanting him to get into preseason as fresh as possible to have the best chance of making an impact at Bournemouth.

I'm torn between wanting Hyndman at the Gold Cup to work into the American setup, and wanting our best starting lineup as of right now to get as much practice as possible, as much time bonding and learning each others' habits, before the WCQs. We're in too precarious a spot right now, and Costa Rica comes to town in september.

Spurs have an 18 year old attacking midfielder in their academy, Samuel Shashoua, who made the 18 for the first team for the first time today. He is apparently a dual citizen, although he has played for England in official U17 games, so he could only ever play for the US if he filed a one-time switch.

It seems rather unlikely that he would ever play for the US because the "not good enough for England but useful for the US" window is not large, but FYI.

It's even worse than the headline. Just 2 clubs account for 2/3 of the minutes. Unless you were on ManU or Everton, your ass was glued to the bench if you were a teenager this year in the EPL.

According to a reply on that tweet: Everton gave 1500 mins of Davies and Man U had 1700 mins of Rashford, so really just two guys
I want to know who it was who got a single, lone "minute" of play for Arsenal.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles

This doesn't count cup matches though, Zelalem played in a couple this year

*Edit: confirmed the tweet with Transfermarkt

Let us remember these numbers as we observe that Pulisic got 2,237 minutes for Dortmund this year. 1471 in Bundesliga, 599 in the UCL, 167 in the DFB-P. And yet some of his fans want him to transfer to the EPL.

Bobbi Wood with the start today, just started on FS1. Wolfsburg has come out blazing, though, since they need a point to avoid relegation. Hamburg need the win to stay out of the relegation playoff.

Five minutes in and Wood has yet to touch the ball. He's alone up top, gonna need some service here.

Edit: just after 30 minutes, Wood nicks a ball just at the edge of the center circle and plays a precise little chip to release his streaking midfielder. Result is a very nice goal to tie the match.

Apparently Pulisic won the penalty that put Dortmund on top 4-3 today, guaranteeing a top three finish and direct entry to the CL group stage. (Though the win turned out to be unnecessary because Hoffenheim also drew.)

16 year old center back Kik Pierie made his pro debut for Heerenveen in the Eredivisie Europa League playoffs.

From what the sleuths on BigSoccer have found, both of his parents are Dutch and he has US citizenship because his father was working at an American hospital during the year he happened to be born. So, that's not a particularly strong cultural tie, though sometimes players with this profile choose to play for the US anyway (e.g. Aron Johannsson).

He has played in UEFA U17 games for the Netherlands, so he'd have to file a one-time switch to play for the US some day.

Everybody expects Sargent to head abroad and this source (not sure of his track record) says it's Werder Bremen. Sargent doesn't turn 18 until February and wouldn't be able to officially sign prior to that point.

Perry Kitchen will leave Hearts this summer.

>> From captain to the exit, Perry Kitchen is leaving Scottish club Hearts after one and a half seasons, his representatives confirmed to the Insider. The 25-yar-old defensive midfielder fell out of favor this spring and lost the captain’s armband this week. No word on his next destination: stay in Europe or return to MLS. It’s still very early in the process.

If he were to come home, D.C. United would have first crack at him; United retained his league rights by attempting to re-sign him when his contract expired after the 2015 season. United is in the market for help in central midfield. Whether the club could afford him, or whether he would want to rejoin United, is unclear.
Kitchen was initially a big hit at Hearts and was quickly named captain, but things went downhill this year. Hearts have performed below expectations and apparently so has Perry.

DCU aren't big spenders, but I'd imagine any MLS club could afford Kitchen if they wanted him. Dominating the SPL was his chance to get a fat contract from some Championship club, but it didn't happen.

Hold up:

http://www.weser-kurier.de/werder_artikel,-baumann-aeussert-sich-zu-moeglichem-sargenttransfer-_arid,1603689.html

Werder's sporting director says a commitment from Sargent is unrealistic at the moment because there so many clubs after him. He is definitely boosting his stock with the U20s so far. His transition from the U17s to the U20s has been seamless even though he is more than three years younger than some of his teammates and opponents.
