New season, new thread.

As we all know, there aren't too many heavy hitters left in Europe after quite a few top USMNT players signed with MLS over the last year or two.  There is still a contingent of players abroad, though, headlined by Howard, Guzan, Bedoya, and Johnson.  Other big or rising names are Cameron, Chandler, Yedlin, Brooks, Morales, Williams, and Johannsson.

I don't think there are many -- or any -- momentous transfers expected this summer.  Some highlights from the last year and notes for the future:

* Fabian Johnson had a great second half of the season after a series of nagging injuries and help Gladbach get into the Champions League group stage
* Alfredo Morales played a central role in helping Ingolstadt win promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time.  He signed an extension at the end of the season.
* Brad Guzan finished the season poorly and was replaced by Shay Given down the stretch.  His future at Aston Villa is unclear.  Given is definitely not a long-term answer, but will they bring in someone else?
* Johannsson struggled with injuries and didn't put up the same sort of numbers this season, but heated up at the end of the season and looked back to normal
* Bobby Wood played well, despite missing time with injury, after switching clubs in the winter.  However, his club was relegated to the third tier...rumors say that he may be on the move back to the 2.BL.
* Cameron had an up and down year, but Stoke gave him an extension.
* Ventura Alvarado had a breakout year for America and won the CONCACAF Champions League
* Julian Green's loan to Hamburg was a disaster and it was a lost year for him.
* Yedlin hardly played at all at Spurs after joining in the winter and faces a hard road to playing time.  A loan next year might be in the offing.

I'm more focused on the youth movement that I think is starting to bubble up through the contingent of players in academies across Europe.  Most academy players don't make it and it's easy to overhype youth players based on club association.  But we have a lot of guys over there right now and some of them look like pretty legitimate prospects to me.

Here are some prospects who are already playing first-team soccer or could soon:

Heading the line is Rubio Rubin, who started 21 games at Utrecht as (mostly) an 18 year old and who is now looking good with the U-20s in NZ.  He's a second striker with good strength (despite not being very tall), quickness, decision-making, and technique.  Expect to see more of him with the USMNT soon.

Then there's Emerson Hyndman, a box-to-box midfielder at Fulham.  Hyndman is somewhat diminutive, but is such a clean passer and he reads the game well.  He started the 13-14 season with the U18s and then breezed through the U21s.  Last season, he made nine starts in the Championship in Fulham's chaotic first half of the season.  Then he broke his collarbone in CONCACAF U20 qualifying in January and missed the rest of the season.  He's back captaining the US U20s.

Gedion Zelalem is pretty well known by now.  I was hesitant to get too excited about him until I could see him.  He's looked very good with the U-20s, albeit against fairly weak opposition so far. Still, he's playing up a cycle against players 1-2 years older than him.  Looks to be an excellent passer, calm on the ball, good technique, maintains possession well.  We need to see more, but the early returns make him look pretty legit.

Andrija Novakovich.  Big hulking center forward who moved from Reading's U18s to U21s to the first team last season, making his debut in the Championship, all in his first year at the club.  Reading wouldn't release him for the U20 World Cup because they want him in preseason camp with the first team.

Desevio Payne made his first team debut for Groningen at right back and looks like a solid prospect so far based on his play with the U-20s.  Hopefully he'll work his way deeper into the first team this coming year.

Cameron Carter-Vickers.  He's one day too old for the U17 World Cup, but looks like a leader at the U20 level.  He's even captained Tottenham's U21 team at times.  He looks much more physically mature than his actual age, which sometimes worries me, but he's not just a physical beast.  He reads the game well.  It wouldn't hurt for him to improve on the ball a bit, though he's not exactly Jay DeMerit out there.  His progression up the ladder relative to his age is impressive.

Christian Pulisic.  This guy might just be the best US prospect around.  An attacking midfielder who looked a cut above in CONCACAF U17 qualifiers.  Since joining Borussia Dortmund, he's jumped straight into their U17 team and has received really good reviews from people who aren't prone to overexcitement.  (He's only played five games, but has six goals and three assists).  He'll move to BVB's U19s next year, but if he's really that good he could make a first team debut in the not-so-distant future.  Really good prospects tend to skip the reserve team in Germany.

Mukwelle Akale.  I've never seen him play.  He's a tiny guy, 5'4" or so, but is apparently quite fast, very technical, with good vision.  Those who have seen him swear by him.  What makes me excited about him is that Villarreal is carrying him as a foreigner (he doesn't have the right passport to qualify as domestic in Spain).  Clubs don't like burning foreigner spots on prospects unless they're really serious about them. I'm not sure whether Akale fits in on the wing or as a second forward and/or #10 type.

And here's the potpourri of youth players around the world.  I don't know anything about a lot of them, particularly those in Mexico.  Most academy players don't make it, but I think there are some good prospects here.

by the way, what's up with Pynadath? Joined Real Madrid's academy at 11 two years ago - any updates on him?

Over on BigSoccer someone dug up that he was on the Infantil B team (2002 birth year) this season.  No idea how he's doing.  Obviously he's extremely young and has a long, long way to go.  It's nice that he's gotten a chance at Real Madrid and he must have done something right to get in, but wake me up if/when he's still a top player there when he's 16 or 17.  Puberty tends to upend the pecking order in a big way.

Hopefully Pynadath's parents have a solid "moved for work-related reasons" excuse.  Ben Lederman is getting booted out of La Masia because his parents didn't have solid grounds; he was one of the "improper" youth transfers that resulted in Barca's transfer ban.

Here's an article from February on him: http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_27552011/real-madrid-soccer-academy-grooming-bay-area-eighth

It mentions that he's about to turn 13 (by now he has) and there was the thought that the US might ask him to return to the residency program:

But the Pynadaths might face a difficult decision with Joshua, who turns 13 on Friday. He could be asked to join the U.S. residency program in Florida within two years after the seasoning in Madrid.

If the USSF actually did ask him to come to Bradenton while he still had the option to stay at Real Madrid, I would advise the Pynadaths to laugh them out of the room.

I'm not a big fan of residency.  I think it's mostly a waste of resources and it's completely useless for players already in the hierarchy of a professional club.

Ramon Martin del Campo (center back) signed with Deportivo Saprissa.

He's had a strange year.  In 2014, he was playing in the PDL summer league for the SJ Earthquakes U23s before his senior year at UC Davis.  The USMNT happened to be training nearby and scrimmaged the PDL team.  Del Campo did well, impressed the staff, and was called into a US U23 camp not long after.  By January 2015, his college career was over.  MLS signed him to a pre-draft deal, but he was apparently completely awful at the MLS Combine and went entirely undrafted, which dissolved his MLS contract.  Now he winds up at Costa Rican powerhouse.

It's really hard to predict how he'll do....

Is that George Weah's son at PSG? Wasn't Michael Hoyos a doubt between Argentina or the US until injuries? Is he still playing someplace?

1. Yes.  He's been part of US U14 and then U15 camps.  No idea how legit of a prospect he is.

2. Hoyos was in the Argentine camp before his car accident and played for them at the CONMEBOL U20 championship in 2011.  He could still switch to the US, but it doesn't look like he is even close to being good enough.  Two seasons after his car accident, he finally made one last appearance for Estudiantes.  In the 2013/14 season, he had a loan stint in Greece with OFI Crete.  He now plays for a smaller Argentine club called Sarmiento that was one of the second division clubs that got hauled up as part of the Primera's bizarre expansion to 30 clubs.  He is a rarely-used bench player for them.

Random notes:

- Bob Bradley's Stabæk is still rolling with an 8-2-2 record.  They are in second place, three points behind Rosenborg.

- Christian Pulisic advanced to U17 Bundesliga as BVB beat RB Leipzig 4-1 on aggregate.  Pulisic scored in the first leg and assisted on both goals in the second, which brings him to six goals and five assists in his first six games with the club.  He's getting very, very good reviews there.  He looked very good in highlights and for the US U17s.  I don't like getting all excited about players as young as Pulisic, but I'm breaking my rule here.

- According to Kicker, winger/forward Jerome Kiesewetter has been promoted to the Stuttgart's first team next season.  I'm not convinced he'll be able to make an impact in the Bundesliga, but that's a good sign.

- Apparently Bobby Wood's move to Erzgebirge Aue was not a full transfer, but a loan-with-option-to-buy.  Aue won't be able to afford the terms of the agreement after relegation, so he's possibly heading back to 1860 or possibly hitting the transfer market.  Although his initial departure from 1860 was acrimonious, both the manager and sporting director involved are gone.  Wood played well for Aue down the stretch, which will buoy his value a bit.

Horton was released by Cardiff City last month.  He'll play for Leeds' U21 team.  He has gotten some US U23 call ups, but I don't think it is all that likely that he'll make the qualifying team.

EDIT:  I'm actually unclear whether he was released by Cardiff or chose to leave on his own.  In any case, he skipped out on ACC soccer and signed with Peterborough two years ago, moved to Cardiff last year, and now to Leeds.

Marc Pelosi has been released by Liverpool.  Sad, but no surprise there.  Whatever chance he may have had of making the first team died when he badly broke his leg two years ago.  Since then, he's struggled to get into their U21 team.  He looked fairly pedestrian at Toulon.

He has a German passport, which could open doors in Europe.  I would think an MLS team somewhere would take a flyer on him too.

So it's transfer time down in Mexico.  One of the really strange quirks of Liga MX is the pacto de caballeros among all the league owners.  My loose understanding of it is that it's an agreement between the owners to act as if the Bosman ruling never happened.  They agree to not sign any other team's out of contract players on a free -- everyone must be sold, whether they are under contract or not.  So every summer there's a lot of swapping and players don't have all that much choice over where they go unless they leave the league.  There's some sort of draft that facilitates all of this.  I'm not sure if Bosoxen reads this thread, but I'm sure he'd know.

In any case, today seems to be the day when everything goes down.  All the left backs are on the move.

- Jonathan Bornstein's loan to Querétaro has become permanent.  We will be seeing him in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Edgar Castillo has moved from Atlas to Monterrey.  That's his eighth club in Mexico.

Greg Garza is replacing Castillo at Atlas, after he replaced him at Tijuana.  Apparently it's a one-year loan deal; he just signed a three year extension with the Xolos last month.

Garza's departure may, or may not, open up more playing time for yet another left back, Tijuana's John Requejo, Jr., who is currently with the US U20 team in New Zealand.  I don't know who his competition would be, but he got his feet wet with some Copa MX games last season.  Requejo just turned 19.

There are also rumors that Joe Corona is moving from Tijuana to Monterrey and that Miguel Ibarra has been sold from Minnesota United to Club León.

Corona moved to Veracruz.  Ibarra to Leon is still strongly rumored by the press and, seemingly, by the player himself, but it's not official.

Ibarra to Leon has been confirmed.  Rumored to be a seven figure transfer fee.  If it's anywhere close to that, it's a nice haul for an NASL club and by far the biggest sale the league has ever made.

Bild is reporting that Bobby Wood is headed to VfB Stuttgart for €1.2m.  Bild is a fairly unreliable rag, but they do cite Alex Schmidt's role in the transfer, which makes it more believable.  Schmidt was an 1860 youth coach who showed a lot of faith in Wood in the past who now works as a scout for Stuttgart.

A transfer to the Bundesliga would be quite a change in fortunes for Wood if this comes to pass.

This one isn't finalized.  There's also talk that Kaiserslautern is interested.  Bring on the Schnerres match reports!!!

There's also been some more reshuffling in Mexico.  It seems that in their offseason meetings, the Liga MX movement gets sorted out, and then the players in or dropping to Ascenso MX are handled.

- Benji Joya has moved from Santos Laguna to Necaxa
- Alonso Hernandez has gone on loan from Monterrey to the brand-new FC Juarez.  Hernandez is from El Paso, so this is basically a homecoming.
- Kevin Huezo has moved from Irapuato to Murcielagos.  Which is sort of not a transfer at all - Mexican soccer has a lot of sketchy multiple-club-ownership situations.  The same group owns both clubs and Murcielagos is taking Irapuato's place in Ascenso MX.

Joya and Hernandez were both with the US U23 team in Toulon, but both have an uphill battle to make the team when the real games roll around.

- Defensive midfielder Marco Vidal has moved from Mineros de Zacatecas to Atletico San Luis, both in Ascenso MX.

- Center back Shawn Barry moved from LASK Linz to FSV Frankfurt.  A 2.Bundesliga move is very good work for a player in the Austrian second tier.

Some updates:

- Fresh off a successful U20 World Cup, right back Desevio Payne has signed an extension with Groningen.  He made his Eredivisie debut last season, I expect him to get more playing time this year.

- Michael Orozco has moved from Puebla to Tijuana.  Not shocking, as Tijuana's new manager coached him at Puebla not too long ago.

- Cody Cropper has signed with MK Dons.  He was released from Southampton last month, but figures to back up David Martin at the newly promoted Championship club.

- TDS reports that RSL U18 forward Brooks Lennon is going to sign for Liverpool.  This has been rumored for a long time, but nobody knew how he would be eligible.  It turns out he's getting an Irish passport.  Lennon is supposed to be good and RSL wanted to sign him.  But, Liverpool was calling.  Something that Jürgen won't have to lament!

- Steve Cherundolo has been named Hannover's U17 manager.

- Sparta Prague's forward Fafà Picault has been released.  He signed from the second-division Fort Lauderdale Strikers, but didn't make an appearance in the Czech League.

- Center back Miguel Palafox has moved from Club León in Mexico to Santa Tecla in El Salvador.  He made one appearance in Liga MX but didn't break through.

US Youth league wants to collect fees on transfer of Yedlin.

https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/us-youth-club-petitions-fifa-for-right-to-collect-fees-on-deandre-yedlin

On Monday, Crossfire Premiere, a youth club based in Redmond, Washington, sent a letter to FIFA's Executive Committee asking for the right to collect solidarity fees in regards to former academy product DeAndre Yedlin, who last year transferred from Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders to the English Premier League's Tottenham Hotspurs for a reported $4 million fee. U.S. Soccer guidelines prohibit youth clubs from collecting these fees—which are meant to reward youth clubs for helping develop players—despite the fact that FIFA mandates that these payments be made by professional teams. MLS abides by these U.S. Soccer guidelines and does not pay out any fees to youth teams that it receives in the transfer of MLS players, such as Yedlin.

This issue is a big can of worms in US soccer.

The primary argument against US youth clubs collecting development fees is that they have already been compensated, via the annual fees coughed up by parents of all their players.

Which then goes back to the issues with Klinsman wanting the top clubs to NOT charge parents a fee.

Plenty of other countries have pay to play and still receive solidarity payments. It appears to be another in a long line of situations where USSF is so desperate for MLS to succeed they go out of their way to help them screw everyone else.
I'd love to know what they think is in Fraser v MLS that precludes paying the fee. I'm not all that versed in anti-trust, but I didn't see anything in there that I would interpret as having any relation to solidarity fees.

Here's an article that gets deeper into it than any other I've seen thus far.

- 26 year old GK Austin Guerrero has moved up a division in Mexico from Altamira to Puebla

- Molde & Norway starter Ørjan Nyland has been sold to Ingolstadt.  That leaves the starting role to Ethan Horvath, who just turned 20.  He's made a few starts this season, including today.  Horvath was set to back up Zack Steffen at the U20 WC, but Molde wouldn't sign off on his release.  It would be promising to see him hold down a starting role at one of Norway's bigger clubs at a rather young age for a GK.  However, it's possible that Molde will acquire a veteran in the near future.  We'll see.

- Royal-Dominique Fennell moved within the 3.Liga from Stuttgarter Kickers to newly-promoted Würzburger Kickers.

- Jann George jumped from Greuther Fürth to Jahn Regensburg.  George made his pro debut for Fürth in the 2.Bundesliga last season, but didn't catch on despite scoring a ton of goals for their reserve team.  I've heard that he is a fairly talented forward, but is real head case.  I guess that's why he's staying in the Regionalliga Bayern after scoring 14 in 18 games there last season.

- Chivas USA has a pretty good academy that's finally being wound down this summer.  Many of their top prospects will probably be poached by the Galaxy.  Others will be in limbo.  One of their kids, 17 year old Edson Alvarado, is the latest to sign with Club Tijuana.

Bobby Wood has signed for Union Berlin, apparently for a €1m fee.  Union Berlin are also in the 2.Bundesliga, which seems about right.  There were the Stuttgart rumors, but they seemed a bridge too far, at least for right now.

Brooks Lennon has now officially signed for Liverpool.

Freddy Adu has exercised an out in his contract and is leaving Finland (speculation is he wasn't going to make the first team) http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-fc-yahoo/freddy-adu-leaves-club-in-finland-a-few-months-after-signing-155651412.html

Soooooo.... NASL?  Skybet League 2? Where does Freddy go from here?

Adu started the year with the first team, but apparently his fitness was terrible and he was sent to the reserves.  So mostly recently, he was playing in the Finnish fourth division, which is probably worse than the NCAA.

Now that he's failed in Finland, surely his cachet as a former big-name phenom is entirely gone.  Next stop: NASL, USL, or something like Thailand or India, no?  I would not surprised if he simply retired, either.  He doesn't seem to care about his career or enioy soccer whatsoever and hasn't for some time.

In other news:

- a Florida teen named Jonathan Lewis has signed for Bradford City.  Apparently he's a forward.  He must have a Euro passport of some kind.

- Bjørn Johnsen scored a brace for Litex Lovech in Europa League qualifiers, but they were embarrassingly eliminated by their Latvian opponents.  Goals at :34 and 1:21

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-EBUdO6ung

- Morgan Langley (St. Patrick's Athletic) and Danijal Brković (Olimpic Sarajevo) were also eliminated.

- Americans entering in the next round of UEFA games - Ethan Horvath & Josh Gatt (Molde, CL2Q),

You nailed it.  NASL.  The Tampa Bay Rowdies.

This move seems like a good enough fit for him since the Rowdies coach knows and supports Adu. Perhaps with this personal connection and less pressure, Adu can regain some of his confidence and ability. For his sake, I hope it works out.

- A 23 year old Egyptian-American center back named Amro Tarek Abdel-Aziz has signed a four year deal with newly-promoted Real Betis.  This was a WTF move for me - the last I knew of him he was a scrub on a few Bundesliga reserve teams playing substitute minutes in the Regionalliga several years ago.  As it turns out, he went back to Egypt and was a starter for El Gouna there for two years.  Who knows how this move will turn out.

- Jose Torres is back from injury and started Tigres' Copa Libertadores semifinal against Internacional.  Tigres lost 2-1 in Brazil, not a terrible result heading into the second leg at home.

- Geoff Cameron and Danny Williams are both healthy enough to have started preseason matches for Stoke and Reading respectively.  Cameron played CB, a change from his usual RB at Stoke.

- Tigres beat Internacional 3-1 in Monterrey to advance 4-3 on aggregate in the Copa Libertadores.  Jose Torres started both legs as a fullback.  Tigres is the first Mexican club ever to reach the final of Copa Libertadores.

- US U20 forward Maki Tall has signed with FC Sion of the Swiss league.  He had been most recently under contract with Lille and on loan to Red Star Saint-Ouen in the French third tier.

- GK Quentin Westberg abruptly left Sarpsborg in Norway and signed with Tours of Ligue 2 in order to be closer to his family.  It looks like he will likely back up an 18 year old, who is the incumbent starter there.

- Forward Benji Lopez, an RSL academy graduate who was later released, has hooked on with Santos Laguna in Mexico.  He's still young enough to play with their U20 team, I believe.

- Uruguayan-American midfielder Fabian Bastidas has moved from "the other" River Plate (of Montevideo) to a newly-promoted Uruguayan club called Villa Teresa.

Stuart Holden with a story on the Player's Tribune about his interminable rehabbing - http://www.theplayerstribune.com/stuart-holden-rehab-diary-soccer/

Knowing I have more to give, the inevitable question being for how long? Is it worth the risk of getting injured again and all of the trials and heartbreak that comes with that? Is it worth the blood, sweat and tears to pick myself off the gym floor for the umpteenth time? I wish nothing more than that this period of my life — living as an injured player — was over.

- Erstwhile youth prospect Omar Salgado has gone on loan from Tigres (MEX) to Tampa Bay Rowdies, joining Thomas Rongen's island of busts & misfit toys that includes Freddy Adu and Gale Agbossoumonde.

- Travis Brent moved from Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie down a division to Almere City.  Brent was an undrafted defender out of Marshall who randomly signed in the Netherlands.  Surely he was helped out by the fact that he has a Dutch passport (and could be signed for cheap) - his uncle is Jacco Eltingh.  Maybe he'll get some playing time in the second tier; he spent all of last season with the reserves.

- Cesar Romero, last season's top scorer in the Armenian league, has moved to Vardar of the Macedonian league.  The mildest of steps up.  Vardar is the reigning Macedonian champion, but have already been knocked out of Europe.  He's cup-tied in the Champions League anyway.

- Andrew Wooten, who must be depressed as the sole German-American to never garner interest from Klinsmann, has scored three goals over the first two games in the 2.Bundesliga for Sandhausen.  He scored a brace against Union Berlin over the weekend; Bobby Wood had an assist for the opposition

and a couple of rumors:

- There's suddenly been a bunch of stuff in the media over a possible Aron Jóhannsson move to Werder Bremen

Hugo Pérez is under consideration to be manager of El Salvador - his country of birth.  Pérez was coaching the US U15s and by all accounts doing very well, but was dumped by the USSF for reasons that nobody understands.

Okay, this is a real possibility:

Former US star and current AZ Alkmaar technical director Earnie Stewart has knocked back a Werder Bremen offer for top gun Aron Johannsson, but is now bracing himself for an improved bid from the Bundesliga side.

"That's the only one we've had to deal with," Stewart, once a dual-national USMNT attacker himself, told MLSsoccer.com. "This [offer] was not sufficient, so we rejected it. That doesn't mean they won't come back [with an improved offer], because they were pretty adamant about bringing him in. They've come after him a couple times now."

According to German tabloid Bild, Bremen's  unsuccessful Johannsson bid was for €4 million ($4.4 million), with AZ expecting something more in the €5 million ($5.5 million) neighborhood.

I'd like to see that move. I was moderately impressed with him during the Gold Cup and I'd love to see what he does against better competition, especially now that we can watch on TV.

Deal is reportedly worth five million euros ($5.49 million).

Can anybody who watches the Bundesliga week in, week out speculate on the playing time he is likely to get at Bremen? Last thing we need is Aron to go the way of Jozy and ride the pine in a top league after moving away from the Netherlands.

Five years ago he was playing in the Icelandic second level for Fjölnir, about a month away from a transfer to AGF Aarhus, then in the Danish second tier, where he spent the season mostly as a substitute.

AGF were promoted and he didn't really do all that much for most the season until late in the 11/12 season when he was switched from winger to forward permanently and he got hot.  His good form continued into the first half of the 12/13 season and he was bought by AZ in January of 2013.

- Tigres lost the Copa Libertadores final to River Plate.  Torres didn't play; Jorge Torres Nilo returned from the Gold Cup and the subsequent lineup shift pushed JFT out.  After his long injury layoff he'll have to win back a starting spot.

Miguel Ibarra scored his first goal in Mexico in León's 3-3 draw with Atlético San Luis.  William Yarbrough also started and had two absolute howlers.

Emerson Hyndman has one year left on his contract at Fulham and he's turning down extension offers.  As such there are a variety of transfer rumors swirling around him, but it's hard to say which, if any, have much credence.

Timothy Chandler's manager Armin Veh isn't happy that Chandler is playing for the US and made vague threats regarding his status at the club about it.  I'm not a big Chandler fan from a USMNT perspective, but Veh can go pound sand.

- The Colorado Rapids sold Shane O'Neill to Apollon Limassol of Cyprus.  O'Neill's career has taken a turn for the strange.  He was a breakout player in 2013, a little-known academy product who became a quality starter at CB.  Since Oscar Pareja left Colorado for Dallas at the end of the season, the fortunes of O'Neill and every other young player in Colorado have taken a turn for the worse.  O'Neill's game stagnated in 2014 and in 2015 he's barely played because he's either regressed under Mastroeni or simply been buried behind mediocre veterans.  I really think he should be better than the Cypriot League, but he definitely needs a change of scenery.  I hope he does well at Apollon and moves up the ladder.  With an Irish passport, doors are open to him throughout Europe if he's good enough.

- Vancouver loaned Erik Hurtado to Mjøndalen in Norway.  The forward got hot last spring, but couldn't maintain the momentum and he's slipped down the Whitecaps' depth chart.  Now he'll get a shot on loan at a small club in Norway's top division.

Luca de la Torre signed his first professional contract with Fulham.  As a 16 year old last season he was mostly with the U18s, but made seven appearances with the U21s as well.  He's a fairly big part of the US U17 team and seems to be well-regarded by his club.  He started the season opener for the U21s today as the #10 and assisted the game's only goal.

- Sunderland's Lynden Gooch has been given a first team squad number this year, although I don't expect him to do much this year.  He spent time on loan in the Conference last year with Gateshead.  Maybe a League 1 or 2 loan would be appropriate.

- With nearly two-thirds of the season gone, Bob Bradley and Stabæk are still in second place in Norway.  They are seven points behind Rosenborg and don't seem likely to catch them, but qualifying for Europa League is a real possibility, which would be a real feather in his cap considering how few resources the club has.  They're also in the quarterfinals of the domestic cup.  Former Columbus and RSL squad player Cole Grossman has been a regular in the center of midfield.

Geoff Cameron started Stoke's opener at CB.  That interests me because he's so rarely played CB for Stoke.  I'd be happy if he stayed there permanently.

- Freiburg defensive midfielder Caleb Stanko made his professional debut in the DFB Pokal, in an easy win against world-famous Barmbek-Uhlenhorst.  He blew out his ACL early last season, delaying his debut, but he's healthy and with the first team now.  Perhaps Freiburg's relegation to the 2.Bundesliga will make playing time a little easier to come by for him.

- There's been a flurry of moves in the Nordic countries among lower-level US pros:

- Simon Stadler moved from Landskrona to Östersunds, both in Sweden.  He was a top scorer in the second tier with Landskrona, but they were relegated and wouldn't sell him over the winter.  He's back in the second tier, but this time with a team that looks likely to be promoted this season.

Tristan Bowen signed with KuPS in Finland.  Journeyman forward whose claim to fame is being the first ever academy signing in MLS history (by LA in late 2008).  He's not MLS caliber, but sadly he'll probably do better at this club than Freddy Adu did.

- Attacking midfielder Will John signed with RoPS in Finland.  This guy is arguably the most well-traveled journeyman in the world of US soccer, having played in the US, Denmark, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Israel, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Morocco, and now Finland.

- VPS (again, Finland) signed a right back named Isaiah Schafer.

Finland is a shitty league, but occasionally it's been a platform for a player to do well and come back to MLS and be useful.  Lamar Neagle comes to mind.  Most, however, fade into obscurity or return to the US and play in the NASL or USL.

I don´t know if each of you understands what the article says (nor do I think that BILD is really a serious source for quotes), but Veh just says that Chandler just arrived and participates in trainings for the first time this season (mentions Gold Cup and friendlies), while others (Hasebe and Ignjovski) are doing good, so far. He understands Chandler wants to play there (with the USA), but he has to know what he wants, because in next year, he (Veh) thinks it´ll be the same and a regular starting job for Frankfurt will be hard to get if you´re constantly away or miss the first 6 weeks of preseason training.

I don´t think he is complaining or saying something bad, i don´t even know if that´s from an interview, as those quotes could be from any coach who has a player from USA/Asian/African teams in the regular starting11. New Dortmund coach Tuchel could say those words about Aubameyang or Kagawa, too, for example.

Yeah I read it as club coach complaining about international commitments, which is the same in every language.
