Cashman is in great position to auction Gray to MIL/OAK/ATL now, hope he can get a couple of ATL pitching prospects for him.

Cashman has been absolutely on fire for what, three years now (feel free to correct me on that)?

Best in the game and it isn't close.
I would say it's just about two years precisely, the 2016 deadline was when he moved Chapman/Miller for Torres/Frazier/Sheffield etc.

I’ve watched a fair amount of Lynn this year and just saw him live in KC. He was brutal. I wouldn’t be overly excited about him in meaningful games in Sept/Oct.

Cashman has made a lot of excellent deals and has held on to his top guys, but you can't be adamant about NEVER trading a key prospect. Sometimes you need to pay retail as a GM. He could have had Gerrit Cole, and if you add him to the Yankees AND take him away from the Astros, the Yankees are clearly better than the Astros and probably better than the Sox.

This is not just Cashman. They have put a very good organization in place (with regard to evaluating talent, developing talent and making personnel decisions).

A fair point. These things are constantly in motion though, I'd be pretty damn ecstatic with what he's done in total if I were a NYY fan.

And yes, the whole organization deserves credit for sure, not the least of which letting the guy entirely do his thing.

Brad Brach, FA this winter, traded for 250K in IFA money.
Adam Warren, FA this winter, traded for 1.25M in IFA money.

That is impressive just on its own.

Your general point is true, but the problem with the Cole deal specifically was that they were insisting on Andujar and Cashman really didn't have another 3B at that point (it was before JDM signed with BOS, so before Drury became available).

Hindsight is 20-20 but trading top prospects for an ace makes sense when an ace is available. There hasn't been a Chris Sale for Cashman to go after for one of the top prospects. Cole is a new pitcher this year just like Verlander is pitching the best baseball of his life.

Cashman's plan since the 2016 deadline has been to put as many pieces in place for the upcoming winter. NY will have reset their tax rate and will have a ton of money to spend and not too many holes left to fill, plus still quite a bit of prospect talent (although more of it is a bunch of years away now).

Heyman reporting on Twitter that the outfielder could be Cameron Maybin
Jon Morosi saying it might be Granderson, that seems like a better fit in part because he is one of my favorite players ever.

NYY has arguably the best int’l department—believed to be the biggest staff and the most scouting reports. They have a track record of turning low bonus types quickly into assets, so this money goes further for them than it would for other clubs. Interesting strategy by Cash.

He can still swat em out, and Yankee stadium was fit for his swing.

That and Maybin sucks

He could have gotten Moustakas cheap, financially. The real cost would have been the draft pick.

Yeah, I'm just saying he didn't have one in house at that point, and I don't know how much money Moustakas was still expecting at that point (it was relatively early in the offseason).

The Lynn trade has value if he can be used correctly - but Boone is a first year manager who will now have to take the ball out of people’s hands in order to do that, all while keeping the team happy as they watch teammates basically discarded. Tough ask.

I would put the odds at Gray being dealt in the next 19 1/2 hours at 60 or 70 percent, it is the perfect storm of being able to sell high on him, I think. Then Lynn is your 5th starter and this all makes more sense (although it still blocks Sheffield for this season, barring an injury).

It's really possible that they go for a 6 man if they want CC and Severino to get more rest. It may be unlikely but we're all biting our fingernails with Sevvy right now.

11 hours to go, trade Gray, trade for Jose Martinez, bring in a better catcher than Kyle Higashioka, and call it a day. Thanks, Brian.

Gray has 2 years of control though. Lynn, Happ and Sabathia are FA...leaves you a little thin this winter?

CC will be back, maybe Happ too. Sheffield is waiting also, plus there are some good free agents, a Gray deal now would be about improving that spot in 2019.

Thankful for no Cameron Maybin, still would like to see Gray moved and a RH bat brought in and a veteran backup catcher brought in, 80 minutes to go.

Cashman has done some of his best work in the final hour.

Prado was a great one, we need a spark plug like that.

Looks like Yanks are finished for now. No new bats either in the outfield or at back up catcher. Gray stays too.

Somewhat confused what the plan is with Gray. Maybe he's fixed something, but I can't imagine two starts against KC/BAL build a ton of optimism.

Is he supplanted in the rotation by Lance Lynn? Is Severino hurt?

Lynn will be in the bullpen for now, also NY has a crowded schedule so might need six starters here and there. You know my opinion on Gray.

I wonder if Granderson makes it through waivers?

But, if Cashman saw anybody worth anything out there, he would've already dealt.

I was kind of thinking Lynn made sense for the pen. The downside of having so many good relievers is that there are a lot of low leverage innings going to good pitchers. May as well save some wear and tear on those guys and give him a swing role

Happ will pitch Saturday and infect both teams, plus the fans, and Tampa will rally to win the East.
